With "favorite son" Mitt Romney no longer an option, who will Utahns vote for in November?

Only 30 percent of Utahns polled in a new Deseret Morning News/KSL-TV survey Thursday said they'd vote for the presumptive Republican nominee for president, Arizona Sen. John McCain.

And nearly as many, 25 percent, said they would cast their ballot for a Democrat, Illinois Sen. Barack Obama. Eleven percent said their choice was another Democrat, New York Sen. Hillary Clinton.

Well, well, well, this is quite eye-opening. If this is any indication as to where the conservative vote is going to go, McCain is in deep trouble since Utah is pretty much the only state in which every single county bleeds red during a presidential election.

I guess even Mormons don't like being taken for granted.

Utah wil vote in the vast majority for the GOP candidate. Watch and see. Probably 65%+.

I’m not so sure about that. I have many friends and relatives in Utah and they are telling me that they see a lot of Obama signs in people’s yards. I wouldn’t be surprised if after all of the insults that have been hurled at the LDS population by the Huckabee and McCain campaigns that the people of Utah find other options. JMO.

I suspect if there was even a doubt that Utah was leaning toward the dems, Romney would be sure to get out the vote for McCain. Romney will take the high road. So much more class than McCain and The Huckster.

More evidence of the creepy, near-unamimous support Mormons gave Mitt solely because of his religion. No opposition will be tolerated!

Identity politics. They’re just sulking because the Right rejected a Mormon.

Or maybe they actually want to cast their vote for someone who isn’t blatantly hostile to their belief system. Obama’s never accused them of not being Christian or ridiculed them.

Would you want to vote for someone who did this to your beliefs?

Yeah, I guess the Jews should have supported Hitler.

Fact is that months were spent attacking Romney for his faith. why in heck would these people now support those who spent all that effort to attack and ridicule them?

I think McCain can get them back, and he will win Utah. However, the problem is Colorado and Nevada. Both are swing states with large LDS populations, both will be tough gets and impossible if McCAin does something stupid like pick Huck for VP

I did my schooling in Utah at BYU, met my wofe there, lived there on a couple of occassions for several years.

The GOP will carry Utah.

If Obama or Hillary gets 30-35% of the vote, that will be a pretty big improvement for them.

Utah is a very conervative state, and most people doing the voting are pretty principled (LDS and non-LDS alike) and will look at the issue for their vote, not the perceived insults. The differences on most issues are extreme, even with McCain as the candidate.

Just my opinion based on living there...but we shall see.

Mormonism isn’t Christianity. Obama has insulted western civilization and the Mormon religion far more than any evangelical Christian.

Few people didn’t vote for Romney because of his faith, but plenty of people voted for him because of his beliefs which sounds more like Nazi Germany to me than your analogy.

Mormons weren’t taken for granted. They were insulted and demeaned. I think Hillary would beat the Huckster there if that’s what the race came down to. I think McCain will probably get them back (unless Huck is on the ticket).

True. Whatever faults Mitt Romney has, he is a class act.
