Ummmm actually we do long distance transmission at high voltage DC.

Exactly! The transmission lines between Quebec Hydro, many hundreds of miles north of New Hampshire are DC.

The conversion to AC is done in New Hampshire.

I've seen most of the system in New Hampshire, Vermont and part of southern Quebec.

Someday I'd like to drive up to James Bay and see more of it.

I recall a story about a Canadian long distance line that they were dumping vast amounts of AC power in one end and very little of it was coming out of the other.

After several months of trying to figure out where all that power was going, someone realized that the line was 1/4 wavelength at 60 Hz.

Ooooooops...
