Belgrade's US Embassy set on fire (FNC Report: charred body found in US Embassy)
Yahoo News ^ | 6 minutes ago | By SLOBODAN LEKIC, Associated Press Writer

Posted on 02/21/2008 11:04:42 AM PST by 11th_VA

BELGRADE, Serbia - Serb rioters broke into the U.S. Embassy Thursday and set fire to an office after a massive protest against Kosovo's independence that drew an estimated 150,000 people.

Masked attackers broke into the building, which has been closed this week, and tried to throw furniture from an office. A blaze broke out inside one of the offices and parts of the facade also caught fire.

Authorities drove armored jeeps down the street and fired tear gas to clear the crowd. The protesters dispersed into side streets where they continued clashing with authorities.

The neighboring Croatian Embassy also was attacked by the same group of protesters.

In Washington, State Department spokesman Sean McCormack strongly urged the Serbian government to protect the U.S. Embassy. He said the U.S. ambassador was at his home and was in contact with U.S. officials.

More than a dozen nations have recognized Kosovo's declaration of independence on Sunday, including the United States, Britain, France and Germany.

But the declaration by Kosovo's ethnic Albanian leadership has been rejected by Serbia's government and the ethnic Serbians who populate northern Kosovo. Russia, China and numerous other nations have also condemned the declaration, saying it sets a precedent that separatist groups around the world will seek to emulate.

Kosovo, which is 90 percent ethnic Albanian, has not been under Belgrade's control since 1999, when NATO launched airstrikes to halt a Serbian crackdown on ethnic Albanian separatists. A U.N. mission has governed Kosovo since, with more than 16,000 NATO troops and KFOR, a multiethnic force, policing the province.

But Serbia — and Kosovo's Serbs, who make up less than 10 percent of Kosovo's population — refuse to give up Kosovo, a territory considered the ancient cradle of Serbs' state and religion.

Earlier Thursday, police estimated that about 150,000 people had attended a rally in the Serbian capital. The crowd waved Serbian flags and carried signs reading "Stop USA terror." One group set fire to a red-and-black Albanian flag.

The U.S. embassy in Belgrade burns after masked attackers broke into the building and set an office on fire at the end of a massive protest against Western-backed Kosovo independence, in the Serbian capital, Thursday, Feb. 21, 2008. More than 150,000 Serbs gathered at the rally vowing to retake the territory which is viewed as Serbia's religious and national heartland. (AP Photo)

Can we finally, finally put an end to all this and have a global Crusades? Let’s just freaking finish this instead of continuing to let it fester.

When I read a post like yours, the phrase 'let's get this party started and get it over with', comes to my mind.

Reminiscent of the term “Palestinian”. I wonder how many of the patriotic Americans on FR advocating the bombing of Serbia and recognition of Kosovo would agree to the same treatment of Israel to form “Palestine”?

We are trying to turn it into "Land of the Mosques"!

Yep.

Clinton's policy regarding the Balkans was as totally screwed up as Carter's policy regarding Iran. The fact that we are apparently continuing this madness is beyond disturbing.

Speaking of Tito, a good part of this mess was created by him through his forced transplantation of people from one part of the country to another in an effort to create a false sense of unity and homogeneity.

I can’t blame the Serbians at all. The United States is foolish to recognize the muslims, and seeing Bill Kristol on Fox News getting his panties in a wad and spewing his nonsensical, verbal diarrhea only reaffirms my belief.

Thank you Bill Clinton

McCain and Kerry deserve a whole lot of the blame as well. The MSM that beat the drums for war and pumped out the propaganda deserves a lot of the blame as well.

...and it all happened on behalf of George Soros who wanted to, and now will, control all of Kosovo's resources including Trepco mine.

This is what Clinton should have been impeached for, not his loose zipper.

Now we know what clintons exit strategy was after all these years.

The lame duck is running wild, donating our money freely to failed states in Africa and anywhere in the world especially Muzzie-controled areas.

It's insanity run wild. We're paying for our enemies to destroy us. Pure madness.

America as we have no right and had no right to help ethnically cleanse the serb people from their own country to appease muslim albanians.

fact is wesley clark and clinton should be done for war crimes.
Bush is an idiot for what he has just done, we should not recognise Kosovo except for it being a serb country

Clinton's policy regarding the Balkans

Worst, WORST US foreign policy disaster ever... on par with Carter's Iran disaster.

Bush continued this Balkan crap. Clinton is the first to fault but we had at NO point business in meddling in the Balkans... whether in the 1990's or now. GET OUT OF THERE. No Blood for Balkan-Crazies (whether Albanian or Serb or Croatian).

Thanks for telling me about the link.

I was being attacked left and right about being a defender of Kosovo and Muslims. It was a mistaken belief and I spent way too much time defending myself. Granted, whatever happened in Kosovo happened.

But can you tell me for sure how the Serbs will conduct themselves in Kosovo after what they did in Bosnia? You can't. And neither could anyone else. Someone had to step in and stop the madness before it became another slaughter.

MY point and my only point was this -- why did WE have to commit an armed response when it should have been the Europeans problem? See my post at #285 for my position.

we have helped to kill the native people of a country, we have helped to ethnically cleanse a country all for muslim appeasment

Bush is on the wrong side of this and we should not be doing anything except helping the serbs against muslim albanian fanatics who are spreading across Europe though immigration and terrorism

I said this before & I’ll say it again.

So which of these is more offensive to you?

1. Muslim destruction of 150 ancient Christian churches on OUR watch, with US help. Video of Albanian Muslims tearing down the cross & burning a church: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sFPSMK6ftWs
And then th US gives the Muslims Albanians a piece of Serbia for “their efforts” to destroy all traces of ancient Christianity in Kosovo!

2. Or some young pissed off Serbs set fire to a US embassy with no one in it and get stopped by Serbian police? Video of the embassy attack http://video.news.sky.com/skynews/video/?&videoSourceID=1305768&flashURL=/feeds/skynews/latest/flash/belgrade_1800_170208.flv

I’ll defend the Cross before I defend the policies of corrupt politicians anytime, anywhere! We are so on the wrong side of this, and you don’t have to be “Serbia’s best friend” to see that!

You are quite right, and second of all: Srebenica is just as big a farce as Racak. Less than 2000 bodies - of both Muslim and Serbian origin - have been dug up in a region where a civil war was fought for four years.

2000 dead in four years. Not much of a genocide that, more like a comparatively gentle New Orleans. And - stretching the analogy - instead of blaming the gangsters for the New Orleans deaths, we're all busy blaming FEMA.

I’ve just seen that too

We should not be helping albanian muslims to ethnically cleanse serbs fromtheir own country.

I cannot even fathom out how Bush thought of doing this and also where is the left on this, or this alright because clinton started it.

Evevn the media are clueless and saying how about those bad serbs how dare they yet forgetting how we are ethnically cleansing serbs from their own country.

Truely sickening and the media too

The serbs have every right to go in to Kosovo and stop this as it is there country not Britains, France or America’s.

We dont like being told, imagine a part of America being taken away because china says so

Sorry, but I sympathize with the Serbs. We can thank Clinton for supporting Al Qaida in Albania against the Christian Serbs, who were our allies in WWII. And now we support Kosovo breaking away to form a new Islamic Republic. Another stupid Bush policy! (and I voted for him twice).

Otherwise, that poster is more a Serb than he is an American.

No, the poster is more rational than the POTUS or anyone else who thinks you can build nations effectively if only you really, really, really care. And, how in the name of all that is decent can that man justify pissing away hundreds of billions of dollars of American treasure and spill God knows how much American blood in the sands of Afghanistan and Iraq to keep Al-Qai'da out of those countries, and then help create a bridgehead for them into the heart of Eastern Europe?

I guess history was another subject The President didn't do well at in school.

Here's my Croatian Roman Catholic perspective:

Kosovo cannot be compared to either Croatia or Bosnia-Hercegovina since Kosovo is and always has been an integral part of Serbia. Serbian outrage is more than justified in this case and the fact that the USA along with its friends did an end run around UN 1244 (which guaranteed Kosovo as part of Serbia) shows to the world the actual value of the "Western guarantee". International law has been subverted and Pandora's Box has been opened.

All this so that the USA can have a base in Kosovo with which to further surround Russia.

Is it really worth it?
