"Real classy. If you’re going to kill yourself, serving into oncoming traffic and taking out some poor bugger whose only crime was to be coming the other way at the wrong time is hardly the most thoughtful way to do it..."

I agree. What a self centered, it's only ME that matters attitude. There are plenty of very high bridges around. Just swerve off the side of one of those -- by yourself. Better yet, enjoy the fall and the view by just jumping off the side -- alone!

Gambling’s only bad if you lose. :-)

True :-). But if you get bitten really bad, all bets are off, or should be :-).

I bought a book years ago called "Beat the Dealer". It was fascinating. Now they have outlawed playing blackjack by counting the cards. If you have a good enough memory, keeping track of the Aces and gosh can't remember what they're called, the kings, queens, and jacks. Anyway, if you can do that, you can increase your odds unless casinos change decks now to prevent counting.

I cannot understand anything "Fun" about losing. And of COURSE the majority of people MUST lose.

It was fun when I won. But you can't keep up a winning streak forever. Gorzaloon, I don't see any problem with buying a lottery ticket now and then, sounds like you have your act together.

I was never advanced enough in math, but I spent a lot of time years back putting algorithms together to eliminate combinations of numbers that were unlikely to win, too sequential, all odd, all even, etc., then write my own program just for fun. I would have had to use a new language like C+ or something I didn't know how to code, could have done it in Basic or some of the older languages.

Anyway, I never finished that project, but it fascinated me more than the actual gambling aspect of it. I don't trust those auto machine's picks :-). Although some have won. I'd rather pick my own numbers. But seldom pick any any more.

Seriously,I used to think you had to have a FEW brains to become a lawyer.
This ditz proves that ain’t necessarily so.

Well, we do train mice to run through mazes, chimpanzees to ride bicycles, and gorillas to sign.

Overall, a sad story. I read that she is now working at a call center in Minnesota; I think she needs to just start there and pick up the pieces again—and stay far, far away from any casinos. I think she’d be better off in the long run than she will be trying to unring the bell she rang herself, addiction or not.

I’m sure most of us have “thrown away” something of value (not to this degree of course). Grieve it, accept it, accept responsibility for it, and move forward.

Now she's chasing the longest of long shots: a $20 million racketeering lawsuit in federal court against six Atlantic City casinos and one in Las Vegas, claiming they had a duty to notice her compulsive gambling problem and cut her off.

Out of a liar lawyer? Figures.

Blame shifting and expecting others to make up for her lack of control. She shouldn't get a penny and should be disbarred.

I bet she wouldn’t sue if she had won.

“In addition, the fact that she is suing 7 different casinos, indicates that she split her gambling between them so how was any single one of them to know how much she was losing at the others.”

They keep pretty close tabs on regulars so IMO they knew. However that still doesn’t make them responsible. Casino’s are for suckers or people who don’t mind giving their money away.

provides an unusually detailed window into the life of a problem gambler.

I think you guys are all suckers.

She's not a problem gambler. There's not one thing impulsive in what she did.

She was just setting up the lawsuit the whole time. This longshot has been the plan the whole time.

Sorta like the $54 million pants lawyer.

Guy was selling printer cartridges. Customer came in and asked how much a couple models cost. "This one is $20.39 and this one is $14 million," was the reply.

"$14 million! You'll never sell one at that price," the customer exclaimed.

"Well, maybe," came the reply. "But I only need to sell one of em!"

Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

“It’s like crack, only gambling is worse than crack because it’s mental,”

But they are similar in that the addict will literally do anything to get a "fix". Steal, lie, prostitute themselves out, ruin your family and live in squalor. All because of the "thrill" of playing slots.

<*Restaurants serve fat people who belly up to the all-you-can-eat buffet too,.. >

I have heard of several cases where people who are extremely proficient at consuming mass qualities at such "all-you-can-eat buffet" having their account banned or suspended for eating too much.

Well then don't call it All you can eat. I notice nowadays most places call it All you care to eat. I guess it sounds nicer. But technically as long as the person really does eat the crap and is not stealing it I think they just get what they ask for. (both the restaurant and the patron! Blegh.)

This is terrible. Is there no government program to help these people rescue their finances? The least government could do is finance her efforts to win back her losses. If predatory lending practices are bad certainly predatory casinos must be equally so.

This is all we need to prove that women must have someone to watch over them to keep them safe. Women really NEED men when it comes to money.

With all due respect, what I said just dovetails with what you said. But the easy access and social acceptance of porn and gambling is what I’m talking about. They’ve always been around, yes...but the way they come into our lives and homes today is TOTALLY different.
