Report: New N.Y. Gov. Paterson, Wife Admit Affairs
Couple Comes Clean In Stunning Daily News Interview
Mar 18, 2008 6:00 am US/Eastern

NEW YORK (CBS) - Hours after being sworn in, a report has just surfaced that Gov. David Paterson had an extra-marital affair. And the accusations don't end there.

Not only does the report detail the alleged affair by Paterson, it also claims his wife, Michelle Paige Paterson, also had an extra-marital affair.

According to the Daily News, the governor's affair started back in 1999 when the couple was going through a rough time in their marriage.

In the interview, Gov. Paterson says he maintained a relationship for two or three years with a woman other than his wife, often having rendezvous in a Days Inn on the Upper West Side.

Paterson is quoted as saying, "This was a marriage that appeared to be going sour at one point."

"Like most marriages, you go through certain difficult periods," Michelle Paterson said. "What's important is for your kids to see you worked them out."

The Patersons have two children, a 19-year-old student at Ithaca College who is from his wife's previous marriage, and 14-year-old who attends public school in New York City.

Paterson has been hailed as a politician of integrity and a man who can build consensus in Albany after a tumultuous year under Eliot Spitzer, who was forced to resign in shame last week after a report surfaced linking him to a high-priced call girl ring.

The Daily News is also reporting Gov. Paterson flat out denied another rumor flying through Albany – that he had fathered a love child by another woman.

Though B.C. professes admiration for HST, he has omitted that HST quote from his liberal lexicon.

In the interview, Gov. Paterson says he maintained a relationship for two or three years with a woman other than his wife, often having rendezvous in a Days Inn on the Upper West Side.

A Days Inn?? He's a big shot high roller politician and he boinks his squeeze at a Day's Inn?? She must have been a really forgiving type of gal to take that kind of treatment without squealing on him when he dumped her.

What with Rudy's multiple trysts, your latest ex-guv's extra-marital cavorting, and now Paterson's admission, it seems like you folks in NY have your own real life soap opera running most of the time now and you don't even need a TV to watch it.

Yeah, one of the radio stations in Southern Va was having a drawing for 2 free nights in Hotel 6 and $300 in spending money for a great weekend.

I have never known just how that works, do Motel 6 rooms cost just $6 per night or is that an advertising gimmick? If they’re $6 a night I should sell our house and live at a Motel 6 from now on, because I sure can’t live here on that.

Motel 6 rooms were $6 per night when the chain originated in 1962.

“And again FWIW, I wouldn’t bet against Mr. Serial Adulterer being guilty of a lot more than he’s copped to...”

Agree, and with your previous reply as well. Guess the old saying “power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely”. But, I suppose in Patterson's case we at least can not accuse him of having an affair because the other woman was prettier... Really bad, I know...

Motel 6 rooms were $6 per night when the chain originated in 1962.

IIRC, In 1961 I was renting a nicely furnished two bedroom apartment on Siesta Key FL for $65 a month on a yearly basis, and it was only about a 100 yard stroll from the beach recently judged by a national survey to have the whitest sand in the world. So one year later when Motel 6 came on the scene it would have cost me about three times that much per month plus tax to live in a tiny Motel 6 room with no cooking facilities by the side of a noisy dirty highway if there had been one in that area back then. Something seems slightly out of whack about that comparison.

I haven't lived down there for quite a few years but I'm guessing that same apartment, if it's still there that is, would probably go for a couple of thousand $ a month now. Or maybe more, I understand that Siesta Key has become a high rent area now, and I'm way out of touch with rental costs anyway now that I'm a homeowner.

"What's important is for your kids to see you worked them out."

No. What's important is for your kids to see how you worked them out. That's how they learn.

And what you taught them is that when you're going through "rough times" it's OK to go shack up with strangers in cheap motels until you get tired of it.

Hotel/motel costs aren't ever going to be comparable with owned/rented residential properties. A month's lodging at the Holiday Inn Express up the road from me would cost about 3 times the mortgage on my 4-bedroom house.

Gulf Hi-Test gasoline (98 octane) was only $0.26/gallon then too. Cost $0.15 for a kid to go to the Saturday afternoon matinées. 7 oz cokes were $0.05.

So after all the "thunderous applause" for Paterson's inauguration,
and all the fawning press
and all the praise for Paterson's "integrity"
and the punditry's assurances that now we'd be getting "somthing completely different" (different from Spitzer), plus a couple of glorious "firsts" for NY...

...we find out Paterson isn't so very different after all.

What a coincidence that this "first black governor" of NY has a wife named Michelle.

Kind of foreshadows what we're in for if Obama manages to make it into the White House.

No, my analogy is not to imply that I think Barack or Michelle Obama have sexual scandals in their pasts; the analogy is that we'd be getting an unknown quantity --boosted into high office on the strength of a worshipful media and a white-guilt electorate who wishfully project all Goodness and Virtue onto these unvetted black pols.
