Florida Sen. Nelson Proposes Scrapping Electoral College In Reform Package

In a state that has seen its share of electoral problems this decade, Florida’s senior Sen. Bill Nelson made a rare appearance before the state Senate Thursday to unveil sweeping federal election reform legislation that would eliminate the Electoral College. As the state now wrestles with the national Democratic Party to find a solution to seat its 210 delegates at this year’s presidential nominating convention, Nelson noted that “the solution is very elusive,” but that, “If nothing else, this election has provided further evidence that our system is broken.” The Democratic senator, who sued the Democratic National Committee and Chairman Howard Dean last year for stripping Florida of all its delegates, in his reform bill proposes eliminating the Electoral College and giving American citizens direct election of their presidents by popular vote.

I find this a highly unlikely probability of becoming law, but just the idea of piss-ant politicians wanting to destroy what the Founding Fathers put in place to provide for fair representation throught out the country, is just sickening beyond compare.

Why is it these America haters always want to change the rules when things don't go their way? Why is it they say the "System is broken" when they loose?

Being a NH resident I do not want to see us loose the "1st in the Nation Primary" (refering to his proposal of 6 regional primarys during elections years). But why oh why does everything have to change to fit the way the Libs want it to?

I’m sure 36 states will agree to let the biggest three or four decide who all future Presidents will be. :)

Apparently, how the Constitution works was left out of Nelson's schooling. No matter how sweeping the legislation, it still isn't an amendment or a constitutional convention.

Agree for sure; this gets my you know what hot as well. If the Electoral College should ever be scrapped and we should go to a direct vote, the small states would become essentially powerless. And, who knows, the Law of Unintended Consequences being what it is, could cause some interesting developments such as consolidation of some of the lesser populated states into one. Heck, being most of the lightly populated states are Red States, maybe something even better might happen. Well, I can dream can't I?

Didn’t Nelson take an oath to uphold the Constitution of the United States upon taking office? Wouldn’t his present actions be a violation of that oath?

The Socialist argument for eliminating the electoral college is disingenuous. Doing so means Presidents will be selected either through the domination of one populous region over others or the domination of metropolitan areas over rural areas.

Metropolitan areas have a majority of Socialists. It encourages Presidential candidates to bring together coalitions of states instead of supporting regional differences.

Last time I looked, there were 13 states with 3 or 4 EVs.

Fifty minus thirteen is 37, is 37 three-fourths of fifty?

YOU DO THE MATH!

Eliminating the Electoral College would undo one of the fundamental compromises that allowed the 13 colonies to come together as the United States. Any state would be fully justified in withdrawing from the union if its rights were violated by such a change in the basic compact under which it joined.

As a Floridian, I have been embarrassed that this beady-eyed, Jimmie Carter grinin’, puposely slow talking, phoney is one of my Senators. Be that as it may, I am even more embarrassed the other one atually calls himself a Republican.

Bill Nelson is known as one of those guys who does the “I’m justlike y’all” charm dance every time he is due for election just like Bob Graham did. Once the deal is set, he goes right back to being the Democrat lap dog trying to earn his next Dog Bone with the far left.

No, that is your party's problem and does not require a rewrite of the Constitution to fix. Look in the mirror.

At my best I'm fairly easy to confuse. It's early in the AM so I'm utterly befuddled. What does a state senate have to do with this? Is he saying Florida should abolish Florida's participation in the electoral college?

I know, Nelson is simply looking for a launching place for a nonsense speech that won't avail much in Constitutional-Amendment-Speak.

I wonder if the "system" would be "broken" if the liberals had a candidate that was truly popular, even among Democrats.

Self-serving piece of legislation if ever I’ve seen one. They’re still po’d over losing the last two elections.

This one should be a non-starter but they’ll spend millions of our tax dollars to eventually say so.

As a Tennessean, I'm embarrassed for you. Nelson comes off as one of the dimmest of the dim bulbs in Congress. If his "aw shucks" demeanor is an act, he missed his calling. Since he's probably not acting, it's further evidence that we should require IQ tests anyone who wants to run for Congress and there are many, many other examples.....

Agreed, but FYI, I believe that it would take an amendment to the Constitution to bring this about, or at least I hope so, because it would NEVER pass!

I agree that its unlikely. Consitutional Amendments require 80% of the states to agree to them. There aren't too many small states that are going to 'shoot themselves in the foot' by agreeing to such a change.
