MIAMI -- Officers from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives barged into a South Florida home Wednesday only to discover they had the wrong address.

The ATF agents were supposed to conduct a raid at a home in the 2600 block of Northwest 49th Terrace in northwest Miami-Dade County, but they were off by one block. They entered a house on Northwest 49th Street instead.

A mother and her 2-year-old boy were among the innocent people inside the home when the agents came in

And remember these persons are authorized to carry guns (loaded ones, even) and to use deadly force.

Very unprofessional.

I'm sure they will all get a severe talking-to. That'll straighten them out.

Yeah.

This article is too short to properly cover the subject, & it seems a little strange. The cops left tear gas canisters in the house? Were they live or spent? She kicked the canisters out the door before putting them in the garbage? There is something fishy about this reporting! As for the phrase “Ma’am, you were in the wrong place.”, the cop was more likely joking than be that stupid - I hope!

I will say this: That woman better be real glad she was not smoking a cigarette when the ATF came in!

curious?? Cant she file a criminal complaint for Breaking and Entering,Assault with a Deadly Weapon, Using a Firearm during the commission of a crime, and so on.... thats exactly what would happen if you or I did this. Considering their Warrant had a different AQddress on it , she would be =on the right side of the law. Every one of these Jack Booted thugs should rot in Jail for a long time, and of course in General Population.

Hey, at least they had the restraint not to taze (or shoot) both the mother and her toddler for being “in the wrong place.”

Some police forces are becoming so militarized - they assault suburban homes like they were fortified terrorist bases. Soon they’ll be tossing flash-bangs in the windows before they charge in.

My question is if they’re going to act like this, at what point do they become a true military force and fall under posse comitatus restrictions?

Alcohol, tobacco and firearms should be a convenience store not a government agency of jack booted thugs.

On the bright side, they didn’t burn the house down with her and all the children inside.

Federal cops for anything other than chasing foreign spies and protecting the border is a bad, bad idea.

Indeed, federal laws for anything other than the basics on those issues is a bad, bad idea.

M/D may have been apart of this raid.
...often not the brightest twinkle-bulbs on the tree.

But, you’re right, the article is unusually short.
Another odd thing is that comments are allowed to be posted.

The Sun Slantin’-All & the Miami Herald didn’t even report the story at all (that I could find this AM).

Seems to be a deliberate silence about the whole affair.

Hey if it wasn’t on the 6 O’Clock news...it never happened!

Posse Comitatus went bye-bye last year when Bush signed a budget bill with a “small” rider that repealed it.

Some police forces are becoming so militarized - they assault suburban homes like they were fortified terrorist bases.

The problem is, some of them are. Others are fortified drug storage and distribution facilities manned by really bad guys with big guns. Others are mistakes like this one.

So it's easy to criticize--I've done my share of criticizing ATF. But how do you avoid this? Do you send officers into unknown situations without scary looking flak jackets and helmets? Do you give bad guys 30 seconds warning to pick up their guns? Do you politely request permission to enter?

The problem is the ongoing decline and fall of Western Civilization. My brother in law is a cop. In today's world, every encounter with a citizen is scary. It's hard to stay alive and not be uber-cautious because the country is full of psychopaths with RPG's. If you're a cop, you err on the side of overwhelming force and pray you don't make mistakes.

Was it Solzhenitsyn who wondered how different Russia would have been if KGB/GRU agents stopped returning from such activities?

"And how we burned in the camps later, thinking: What would things have been like if every Security operative, when he went out at night to make an arrest, had been uncertain whether he would return alive and had to say good-bye to his family? Or if, during periods of mass arrests, as for example in Leningrad, when they arrested a quarter of the entire city, people had not simply sat there in their lairs, paling with terror at every bang of the downstairs door and at every step on the staircase, but had understood they had nothing left to lose and had boldly set up in the downstairs hall an ambush of half a dozen people with axes, hammers, pokers, or whatever else was at hand? After all, you knew ahead of time that those bluecaps were out at night for no good purpose. And you could be sure ahead of time that you'd be cracking the skull of a cutthroat. Or what about the Black Maria sitting out there on the street with one lonely chauffeur? What if it had been driven off or its tires spiked? The Organs would very quickly have suffered a shortage of officers and transport and, notwithstanding all of Stalin's thirst, the cursed machine would have ground to a halt!"
