Gun Held To Baby's Head During Wal-Mart Rape, Report Says [FL]

ORLANDO, Fla. -- A 24-year-old man held a gun to the head of a 15-month-old girl while he raped her mother for 25 minutes in a Wal-Mart parking lot, according to an arrest report.

David Welker is accused of raping a woman in broad daylight at a Wal-Mart parking lot located on John Young Parkway after forcing her into her car at gunpoint.

The gun was placed against the child as Welker raped the woman twice, Thursday's arrest report said.

The document also said "he ordered her to dump out her purse. He then took her cellular phone, her debit card" and $70 in cash.

Tip Led To Arrest

Crimeline tips led detectives to Welker after photos apparently showing him at an ATM were released to the public earlier in the week.

"This is huge," Orange County sheriff's Sgt. Rich Mankewich said. "Obviously, he caused fear in a lot of people over the last day and a half. We needed him off the streets."

Detectives said they have a solid case against Welker. Investigators said they found a gun and a sport utility vehicle believed to have been used in the crime.

"We have (also) recovered the jacket he was wearing when the picture was shown and he was trying to hide his face," Mankewich said.

Attack Caught On Video

Deputies said Welker was sitting around the Wal-Mart looking for a target before the attack.

"We have him on video up to a half-hour before this crime occurred just sitting in front of the store looking around, checking out his surroundings, then he chose his victim that he wanted," Mankewich said.

Welker robbed the woman, locked her in the trunk of her vehicle and drove off in a sport utility vehicle, deputies said. The woman escaped from the trunk, drove home and called 911, deputies said.

"She had a baby with her, so it made for a perfect target. She's not going to resist with a 1-year-old baby in her arms," Mankewich said. "She did the right thing. She survived the encounter, and she's able to talk to us and give us a description of this guy."

The child was not harmed.

"That just totally scares me to death," shopper Cindy Isbell said. "It's terrifying. I don't know what I would do."

Arrested 27 Times

Meanwhile, Local 6 has learned that Welker has been arrested 27 times before being taken into custody in connection with the Wal-Mart attack.

When he was 18-years-old, he was arrested twice on theft charges.

Other charges include battery on an elderly or disabled person and grand theft auto. But this is Welker's first sex crime arrest, Local 6 reported.

"This guy has been through the system so many times, he knows not to talk to the police about anything," Orange County sheriff's Sgt. Rich Mankewich said

A 24-year-old man held a gun ....

This may be his first crime with a firearm. While liberals believe in giving those from "disadvantaged backgrounds" one more chance ... or two more ... or twenty-seven more ... I'll pray that they see this as a gun crime. Maybe he'll get longer than his average prison time for this one.

Math teacher comment: This is at least his 28th (adult?) arrest, more if the press ignored "youthful indiscressions" as a juvenile. At age 24, he has had less than seven years to commit enough adult crimes to be caught 28 times, and come out of the "Justice System" on the other side in time for another arrest. In other words, he's got a cycle time under three months to go through the system - including his average stay in prison. Even if the arrests go back to his birth, he's averaged one arrest every 10 months since he was in diapers. I just wish I could feel confident that he'll do more than 10 months for armed robbery, rape, and (most serious to a Democrat) using a firearm in the commission of a crime.

I thought FL was supposed to be tough on crime. I guess not. With all these horrible stories I’ve been reading from Orlando lately, I think I’d be afraid to go there again.

"The detectives keep saying she did all the right things to survive. But, she was locked in the trunk."

Almost all the right things. She should have been carrying and shot the bastard before he could force her in the car. I lived in Orlando for a few years, and although it's not Detroit, it's also not a good part of town. They say to NEVER let an attacker get you into a car. Once that happens, you're going to die more often than not. She's the lucky exception to the rule.

I’m surprised someone hasn’t busted out that he made a “mistake”. That seems to be the new excuse for bad behavior.

I remember someone saying that Mike Vick shouldn’t go to prison for a “mistake”. I asked “Do you mean he accidentally raised and fought pit bulls?”

Seems like in this case they were on and that’s how they caught him ....

Two years ago Easter, someone stole one of my cheques and cloned the routing number and labeled them “Payroll Checks”. They cashed >$9000 of them at Wal Marts from here up through Arkansas into Missouri and the last one was cashed in Kansas. At every Wal Mart where the bogus cheques were cashed the security cameras were not working....not one out of over ten Wal Marts....I wouldn't bet on the security camera being of any help from a Wal Mart.

Yes, that’s proof that he did it, after the fact.

They evidently didn’t see it while it was happening or they would have called the police.

I can smell a law suit in the making though. It will be that Wal-Mart should have had someone monitoring those cameras.

Arrested 27 times?
I wanted to put a hole in my desk when I read that. I have a 15 month old baby and my wife takes her to Walmart. This could happen to her. This guy needs to die!

Welkers roommate is sticking by her friend. “I think the charges are ridiculous,” said Brandi Phillips. “Even if he did do it and had some proof I just know I’ve known him for four years and he’s been a good guy.””

I continue to be amazed by girlfriends/wives/mothers who refuse to accept the obvious, no matter how damning the evidence.

When the Phoenix serial “Baseline Rapist” was finally arrested, his wife said “He isn’t CAPABLE of these crimes. He’s a good husband!” The Baseline Rapist had already done hard time for previous sex crimes—and his wife knew he had a record!! But according to her, he wasn’t capable of the new string of rapes. LOL, unbelievable....

“he will attack the wrong woman who happens to have a .38 in her bag.”

Then she’ll be sentenced to 11 years.

I think the men are there. I just think the laws are on the side of the perps too many times.

First of all a man has no right to rape anyone.
Second of all to choose a mother carrying her baby well, he is low life pond scum and would have to climb a ladder to kiss the bell of a snake.

That said...yes, the men in this country need to unite and once again take control of their lives and their families. This puke doesn’t deserve anything but the worst possible fate the court could dish out to him but oh wait...I forgot he’s alreay had 27 arrests. That’s all.

the country has gone nuts and we need to take it back!!!

I should feel terrible I know but... I agree with you. There is no punishment good enough for this guy. Instead we will have a long drawn out trial and the family will have to be exposed to this piece of excrement the whole time and...he’ll WALK AGAIN!!!

There was a story a few weeks ago where this woman left her baby in the car - said she parked it where the security camera was pointed at her car - explained to cops that the security people in Wal-Mart would watch her kid - turns out they did and called the cops ....

If they had him on video for half and hour before the attack why in hell didn’t they continue watching him and anyone else approaching his area?????? If they had the video on him for half an hour before the attack didn’t they THINK he might have had some evil reason going on???? I can’t figure this one out. This woman could have been spared.
