“From what I know, Obama’s grandparents paid for his tuition.”

Exactly what I understood as well.

According to Wikipedia he was born in 1961. His mother separated and divorced Barack’s father when he was two. She took Barack to Indonesia in 1967. He came back to Hawaii to live with his typical racist grandparents when he was 10 years old(1971). So if he was on food stamps it would have had to happen from 61-67.

wow, he actually chose to stay with that bigoted “typical white person” grandma — I guess he’d say that at age 10 he didn’t yet realize what a typical white person was.....

Sorry, I meant his grandmother was a bank executive. As far as I know, his mother wasn’t even in Hawaii when he was going to school there.

We had dirt sandwiches and we had to stalk and kill our own water if we wanted to add it to the dirt to make it easier to spread.
We didn't have the luxury of rocks to suck on either, if we were lucky enough to find a rock our family would have rock soup for a week!
Food stamps were available but who had the saliva to lick them with water in such scarce supply?

"Here is the Time article written by Joe Klein in 2006, long before Obama decided to run for president."

Obama had decided to run for POTUS long before that. In 2004, he was already testing the waters, feeling the winds, and meeting with Arab leaders, meeting with Jewish leaders, getting his ducks in a row and feeling around for financial support.

"My late father’s “lunch” at his one room school (when he was able to go—he was the oldest and had to work on the farm) was a piece of cornbread with lard slathered on it."

He got lard? Lucky Bugger! /s

My grandfather was a WW-I vet, and raised his family during the great depression. As we all know, jobs were scarce and just surviving was very difficult for most people.

According to my mother, her dad would drive to a farm and negotiate with the farmer to hire him to clean out the barn and haul away the manure. Then he’s drive to another farm and sell it as fertilizer.

Mom would laugh about the fact that her dad, for a short time, made a living out of shoveling and selling sh*t. Now that’s a real entrepreneur. Ain’t capitalism great.

My Dad was in a Russian prisoner of war camp from the age of 6 to 9, and in a War orphanage in Africa untill 1948. Mom was in a concentration camp in Germany. Made it tough to complain about not getting something when we were kids.

"For example, I was going to a fancy prep school, and my mother was on food stamps while she was getting her Ph.D."

I notice that he said that his mother was on Food Stamps instead of saying, "we were on food stamps." When we pay attention to what he says, it demonstrates how he massages facts. It is quite likely that mom was off getting a Ph.D. and living on food stamps while he was attending a private school thanks to his grandmother.

Every hippie in the universe - and most grad students - were on food stamps at that time. They were easy to get, the government was actually trying to expand the program (!), and graduate students basically regarded it as a perk.

In fact, well-off families seemed to think it was the responsibility of the government to put their kids through college and even pay for their meals. I knew many kids from very prosperous families who were “emancipated” so that they could receive juicy scholarship and welfare benefits; furthermore, anybody who had a child was considered an independent welfare recipient, regardless of how wealthy her family was. So Osama’s mother was basically just doing what came naturally to a privileged child.

I was told that back in the 1930's (Depression) that the hay/straw crop in the central Illinois area -- where my grandfather was a farmer -- was exceptionally poor one year. So my grandfather convinced several other farmers in the area to pool their nickles-and-dimes and rent a RR box car. Then he arranged for the RR to hitch it to one of their trains going to southern Illinois where they were experiencing a bumper crop.

Yup...you guessed it: My grandfather and his partners rode in that box car down there, bought every ounce of hay they could possibly afford, and rode it back home. Once there in central Illinois. They took what hay they needed and then sold the rest. Didn't get rich but it paid the cost, and gave them not only enough hay but a little bit of folding money as well.

(sigh) And to think that today this would never have been allowed to happen.

I wouldn’t get too caught up in this one because without a first hand witness (like his ‘typical white’ grandma) to dispute it he will be able to twist and spin and there will be no positive way to prove he was poor.

The better battleground to fight on is - how does any of that story about being poor prove you aren’t an elitist today? You went to Harvard Law! You came straight from Cambridge back to Chicago and you tried to get a job in a high powered law firm (run by Rezko) but when that didn’t work out you get into local politics. And your first real job was as a State Senator. You didn’t even have a career before you ran for government. What kind of non-elitist decides that with a whopping two years of ‘real life experience’ he is really to start telling other people what to do and running their lives via state government? And only a few years into that you decided that you knew enough to be one of 100 who run the entire country! And within 12 months you decided that you had enough ‘experience’ to run the Free World!

Hey, if that isn’t an amazing sense of entitlement I’ve never seen one. And only the truly elite are that entitled.

I knew lots of PhD students who had very little income (a few thousand dollars a year) and received assistantships to cover their tuition.

A huge difference in being poor by choice than by circumstance. Sounds like Obamahammod is trying to make it sound like he was born a poor, black child rather than with a silver spoon in his mouth.

It’s important as to Obama’s truthfulness or possible lack thereof whether or not he was poor, but it has little to do with his elitist statements. Elitism is a mindset that doesn’t require a large bank account, just a sense of superiority over others, which can be because of financial position or social status or even educational achievement. It can be based on race or religion or specific knowledge in a discipline.

Oddly enough, Obama may be both a snob and a reverse snob. His apparently stellar scholastic achievements give him educational superiority over many, whereas his choice to identify more with his black heritage than with his white one gives him victim status against evil white America. It must be confusing to dislike half of one’s self.
