I'm most curious as to how she qualified for food stamps.

I knew a number of of white families in the SF Bay Area who certainly could have used food stamps: between the costs of their rising 90's mortgage, medical insurance, etc., food was a near luxury -- and they were told by bureacrats they made too much money on paper, ergo, they did not qualify for food stamps.

And yes, I did put in the word "white". Why? I saw black families in the same situation having no problem getting food stamps.

The real issue is: Growing up poor is not a rational excuse for his obvious elitist attitude.

You are nothing less than an ass. I spoke from personal experience. My experience was in the 1980’s.

I was making a joke and I shouldn't have.
I apologize.
No disrespect meant.

What kind of fancy private school did he attend? Punahou Academy in Honolulu, Hawaii. The tuition at that school today costs over $15,000. I don't know how much it was back in Obama's days, but I gather it was an expensive school. So, how could he attend this school if his mother were on food stamps? Where did his mother get that kind of money? Scholarship? I don't know.

Generally, PhD students are on fellowships, where they teach and/or help professors with research while they study. They receive a stipend which allows one to live modestly.

My guess is that she qualified for food stamps due to her modest income, and she and her son were being supported by her parents, who likely paid the tuition. The tuition may have been reduced due to her low income, and the grandparents income and assets not being counted

Too, too often. I have an uncle ten years older than me who stayed with us for about six months during the "worst of times". I only found out about his visit recently and haven't had a chance to find out how it affected him. It will be interesting when I see him next month to find out what he knows about that era.

I wish I could say that mine was a "great upbringing" but it was far from that. Alcoholism affects more than just the person abusing the alcohol.

During the 60's and 70's her father made over 45K/year, which put him above median income.

Adjusting for inflation, this would put him into the "affluent" category.

The Daily Mail in the UK did some research into her "working class neighborhood:

When The Mail on Sunday went back to the gritty district of Chicago where Michelle LaVaughn Robinson was raised, we found a rather different picture from the one so single-mindedly promoted by Camp Obama.

Instead of the one-room tenement that now appears in most accounts of her upbringing, we found a well-kept neighbourhood of red-brick Arts and Craft-style houses which have long been home to respectable black families.

"Michelle was from a middle-class family," confirmed one of her long-time friends, Angela Acree.

...

Indeed, according to family friends, Michelle's father was a volunteer organiser for the city's Democratic Party, a by-word for machine politics in America, and his loyalty was rewarded with a well-paid engineering job at Chicago's water plant. Even before overtime, he earned $42,686 - 25 per cent more than High School teachers at the time.

So it looks like there's a possibility that his "official" job and salary were a reward for being a Dem party organizer.

Reminds me of Bill Clinton talking about growing up using an out house. His step dad was a well off man who owned a car dealership, and once bought a farm outside of town. The farmhouse didn't have indoor plumbing when the Clintons first moved there, so Slick did use an outhouse for a brief period of time.

But he sure wasn't a poor boy who grew up with nothing, as he tried to imply. As one former classmate put it:

"When Bill talks about using the bathroom outside of the house, he means he used to pee in their swiming pool."

"We used to dream of having lard with our cornbread."

Better hurry up and fulfill that dream: Lard will be banned under Sharia law when Barack Hussein Obama is president!

ROFLOL! A Freeper after my own heart...”The Four Yorkshiremen”?

At least you had hair to pay your taxes with. And you got 4 hours of sleep a week.

If WE slept over 3 minutes in our lifetime, our father AND mother would beat us about the head with broken bottles and dance about on our graves (which were only dried puddles of surface scum in the middle of the failed septic system) singing “ ‘allelujah! “

Someone pointed out on a thread that has now probably been deleted that Obama’s mother was probably still 17 when Obama was born, making the act of conception with the 24 year old foreign student one of statutory rape. The thread said that she turned 18 about 6 months before his birth. What the poster seemed to have missed is that the age of majority back in the 1960 was still 21, not 18. It wasn’t until July 1, 1971 that the voting age was reduced from 21 to 18. I suppose that if he wanted to, Obama could use this as a way of relating to a sizable portion of his voting base since many of them, too, were born to unwed, underaged mothers impregnated by adult men in their 20’s.
