Nurse suspended after 'smacking' unruly toddler
Sunday Telegraph ^ | 4th May 2008 | Andrew Chesterton and Sharon Labi

AN experienced nurse has been suspended after allegedly smacking an unruly toddler in a hospital emergency department.

Jeanette Stewart is on full pay pending the outcome of a police and Department of Community Services investigation into the incident, involving a three-year- old girl, at the Wagga Wagga Base Hospital on April 15.

Did she do the right thing? Have your say in the comment field below and vote in our online poll.

The girl, who was in the emergency department with her mother and a sibling, is said to have been running around and misbehaving when Ms Stewart allegedly grabbed her, smacked her on the bottom and yelled at her to sit down.

It is understood Ms Stewart had feared the child would injure herself or interfere with patient care.

Under mandatory reporting rules, the hospital alerted DoCS, which referred the matter to its joint investigation-review team and police.

Wagga Wagga crime manager Detective Sergeant Dale Holmes said officers expected to interview Ms Stewart in coming days.

"The nature of the alleged assault is simply that the child has been chastised by one of the nursing staff at the hospital in emergency ... a physical assault by being pushed and picked up and being smacked, but that's under investigation,'' he told The Sunday Telegraph.

Asked if the child had been misbehaving, he said: "We believe so, and (the alleged smack) was a result. Whether that constitutes an assault in the circumstances is being investigated''.

A Wagga story! Thanks for posting. Wagga has not been on FR, I think, since the story of the guy who was being prosecuted for having a house painted purple. The purple house story. Beloved of libetarians everywhere.

When I was a kid everyone was allowed to tell you to behave. I don’t remember getting any swats from strangers but my aunts and uncles had no problems stepping in.

My momma taught ME that...except in the case of unruly brats incessantly running back & forth in front of me.

In that case, trip them; then yell, “OUCH! That was my foot you stomped! Watch where you're putting those fat feet of yours, you clumsy little twit!”

They should ask the same questions about these babes. If it would save their lives, I'm all for it!

Indeed. The parents should have had the swat. Several of them. I would have been mortified if someone had to ask me to get my child to behave.

On the other hand, ER waits of 18+ hours are not uncommon in our hospital (and I worked there for 17 years so I know of which I speak.) I had one time where I took my older son in to have his head stitched after a misaimed thrown rock by another kid (or maybe not so misaimed...I dunno) and had to wait for 6 hours. It was very hard to keep my younger son quiet that long. Before anyone observes “No mention of Dad!” he was at work and unable to leave. I had no one else to watch my child.

I cut my hand and had to get stitches. I had to drag my 3 kids with me to the emergency room. I couldn’t get a hold of my husband and then he had to drive to the hospital in traffic.

I was sooooo glad that they were older (7, 7, and 9). They were all very good.

My twins were wild when they were young!!!!!!!! I’m somewhat sympathetic to parents with wild children. I tried not to take mine out because they were so wild. One of them has a brain injury and has hearing and speech issues. Normal discipline didn’t work. I would literally have to pick her up and move her out of situations. It’s also like you had to say no about a 100 times before it stuck. It took so long for her to be a well behaved kid, but she got there.

I faced a similar situation last week but it didn’t require me touching or hitting anyone’s kids. I simply used my evil Mommy voice to say, “We do not run and yell inside this building.” The unsupervised hellions didn’t seem to want to test me. (shrugs)

Does that include caroming into a nurse or doctor? Does that include tipping over a cart of emergency equipment? Disturbing ill people? We have no way of knowing how the ER was set up, but the child was an endangerment and the parents should have been required to control the child or leave. Failing that ...

The mother should be charged with child neglect and the Nurse should be called as an expert witness for the prosecution.
