Former Republican Rep. Bob Barr will announce Monday that he will run for president as a Libertarian, a source close to the Georgian told CNN.
Barr will officially declare his candidacy at a news conference at the National Press Club in Washington. The four-term congressman left the GOP in 2006, saying that Republicans had "lost their core principles."
Barr made a name for himself in Congress for his ardent conservative philosophy and his role in President Clinton's impeachment. He lost a primary election in 2002.
Last month, Barr formed a presidential exploratory committee as he weighed a run for the White House. The source said that Barr had been considering a presidential bid "for several months. He currently runs Liberty Strategies, a consulting firm in Atlanta and Washington.
Barr joins a handful of other candidates seeking the Libertarian Party's presidential nomination including former Alaska Sen. Mike Gravel, who unsuccessfully sought the Democratic presidential nomination this year. Libertarians meet in Denver on May 22 for a four day convention where members will choose the party's presidential nominee.

Adults will do everything they can RIGHT NOW to PREVENT McVain from becoming the candidate. It CAN still be done, and a large and immediate show of support for Bob Barr would be a big help.
RINOS didn’t team up with the MSM and the Dems to back McVain because they believe in his liberal background, although they probably do. They did it because they believed that he would keep them “in the money”, i.e. in power. If they figure out that they will LOSE THE ENTIRE BASE with McVain, they will come around.
Let’s send them that message.

We could all sit around a bar for hours and come up with the worst things the government has ever done, or the worst policies ever implemented, or the worst violations of the constitution.
But, in my mind, there is on singular thing that is the worst thing this government has ever EVER done, which is the worst violation of the constitution EVER done, and which is the greatest threat to our freedoms. That is the criminalization of political speech that was proposed by McCain and signed by W. I don't care who he is running against. Every American has a duty to himself, his children, the constitution, and the nation as a whole to not pull a lever for McCain. There is no worse thing that can be done to the country then elect as President the chief champion of Federal regulation of political speech.
Yeah, and what makes you think that McVain wouldn't be a perfectly good Hitler himself? He's got the temperament for it !

What makes you think I have a precise and narrow tolerance? Because I don't believe in massive new entitlements? Because I don't believe in Federal regulation and criminalization of political speech? My tolerance is actually quite wide for anyone who is even close to being a conservative.
Your life is going to be a misery because ther will be no such nominee in the forseeable future.

I’d probably vote for Barr if he had a serious chance to win, but he does not.
There’s no runoff in US Presidential elections. If in a typical state, Obama gets 40%, McCain gets 35%, and Barr gets 25%, Obama is elected President. For those with a knowledge of history, that’s about what happened in 1912. We need to live in the real world, which unfortunately is far from ideal.
If this fails, maybe he'll get on the same ticket as Ralph Nader.
Ross Perot ran as a conservative in order to stop a RINO? That's some nice revisionism there. Bush lost because he broke his no new taxes pledge, and lost lot of people. Perot was there to fill in the gap of disaffected voters. Bush has nobody to blame but himself.
Gravel too? Does this mean we can look forward to more exciting campaign ads from him?

That was bad but it has been and could get a lot worse.
In Clinton I, those objecting to halfway houses for druggies and the insane in their neighborhoods were subject to HUD American With Disability Act discrimination actions and potentially huge fines that they had to fight in court. Though they won in the end it was not a sure thing and they still had to spend a lot of time and money in the fight.
Newspapers accepting advertisements including the words "spectacular view" or "walk-in closet" and "master bedroom" were subject to warnings. Why? "Spectacular view" supposedly discriminated against the blind; "walk-in closet" against the handicapped; and "master bedroom" against the descendants of slaves. I am not making this up.
Critics of the Clintons were subject to expensive IRS audits (I speak from first-hand experience).
There was an effort to make wearing religious jewelry in the workplace grounds for some kind of harassment suit.
And, say what you want, McCain did walk tall when it came to the recent attempt to reinstate the Fairness Doctrine.
I like Barr but I'm holding my nose and voting for McCain which means I'm going to have to crawl over the broken glass with one arm.
I am dropping my support for the GOP...after supporting it as a member for over 36 years I give up on it. There are few conservative voices in the R party anymore. That fact is represented by the many knee pad party hacks that post Republican partisan claptrap at this site these days.
It is odd to see self proclaimed conservatives tout support for our international adventurism all over the world as a winning strategy when disapproval for such is so wide spread...Nearly 7 of 10 Americans oppose our actions in Iraq and the Balkins while reality impaired neo cons continue to insist that the same American people will support the candidate who promises to continue same.
The neo cons and theocons have destroyed the GOP as a vehicle for conservatism and the dialog at this site these days more and more resembles the hateful rhetoric spewed at DU, and is indicative of the same type mental process practiced by liberals. True conservatives will not allow a political party to redefine the principals of conservatism though there is a mighty effort within the GOP to do so. McCain is the poster child for this effort and I for one am not buying into it.
Just don’t complain if you get a President Obama.
