Leaving Ohio- Moronic World Views, Unions and Income Taxes
The Uncommon Sense Blog ^ | 5/12/08 | Dan Taylor

"Ohio has three things it is promoting that is destined to make it the newest state to suffer a mass exodus going forward of it's existing population and absolutely zero attractability for new residents: A limited and parochial world view of Foreign Direct Investment, the UAW and TEAMSTERS Unions, and a state income tax that is funding legacy health and welfare systems that need to be rethought. The three great things: Ohio State, Lake Erie, and the Cleveland Clinic have an uphill battle to balance the above.

Ohio Democratic Representative Marcy Kaptur ranted, "They are selling America" when recent Asian and Middle Eastern investment funds stepped in to stop the hemorraging of sub prime self inflicted wounds at Citigroup, Merril, and Morgan Stanley. One would have thought those firms had leased the executive suite to those damn foreigners instead of just borrowing the next six months cash flow. Foreign Direct Investment is good for everyone except those who believe we should build a fence around the country and not kiss with our mouths open for fear of getting pregnant...."

Just wait until some Saudi investor offers a few hundred million to Bob Evans but then insists it follows Sharia law.

I live in Ohio. The taxes and regulations make running a business here simply untennable. Moving as soon as practical to Texas. And I'm not the only one. There is a real "brain drain" of entrepeneurs, businesses, educated people (esp. tech educated), etc. out of the state. Even Honda, a HUGE employer north of Columbus, decided to put their latest mfg facility just over the border in Indiana instead of in Ohio because of the taxes and other BS associated with running a biz in Ohio.

To be fair, Gov. Strickland (D) is FAR better than Gov. Taft Taxt ever was. But that really isn't saying a lot.

PS Buckeye fan forever, but frankly, Ohio State is the only gov't institution in Ohio that is worth anything. We are becoming Michigan (the Detroit parts), and Columbus under Mayor Coleman (D) is leading the way.

Not to pick on Ohio, but I fear you are catching the Pennsylvania disease with the politicians you've been electing lately.

Did you know that Ohio has a land area AND a population very similar to Cuba? Thanks to the politicians you are voting in office, you may soon have an economy similar to Cuba as well.

If they do it would be a poor investment to say the least. No biscuits and gravy, no Bob Evans.

The party’s over here in Ohio. There’s a for sale sign in front of my home as I seek friendlier environs!

I live in Ohio too and we have already decided that we will not be able to retire here. With the stupid living wage law that was added to the state constitution in 2006 there is no way that most will be able to live here in a few years.

Well, a topic near and dear to my heart
They call me Bekki Buckeye, as I am an avid Ohio State Alum and Fan

However, I retired (Younger than most!) in my early 50’s and now am a resident of Arizona. We were fortunate to sell our business before the major downturns, but Ohio is the MOST unfriendly business environment. In addition, we could not afford to remain Ohio residents and retire. We have our place back there but we are only there June-October so we can go to “The Shoe” a few times each year.

Taxes are outrageous, utility costs in the upper 20% of the nation and unions have run all prosperous manufacturing concerns right out of the state....first to the “sunbelt” about 20 years ago and now overseas.

I cannot for the life of me understand WHAT ARE THEY THINKING????

It seems to me that direct action is the only means left to preserve the republic. That direct action is to find one or two small, susceptible states that may be 30-45% in line with conservative ideals (pro-life, low taxes, limited government, to name three). Then we must all pull up stakes and move in. We will have the opportunity to start anew. Imagine, schools without PC; refusing government aid of any sort, the ACLU would be out, etc. Maybe a little Pollyannish, but we don't know until we try. It will require all to make sacrifices; but in the end, we will all be better off.
