Prognosis Usually Bleak for Condition, a Glioma
NY Times ^ | May 21, 2008 | LAWRENCE K. ALTMAN and ANAHAD O’CONNOR

Posted on 05/20/2008 7:42:41 PM PDT by neverdem

The statement that Senator Edward M. Kennedy’s doctors issued on Tuesday made clear that his malignant tumor was a glioma, a cancer that arises in the brain and that often carries a bleak prognosis.

Gliomas occur more frequently with advancing age, and studies have shown that in general patients in their 70s fare less well than those 45 and younger. Still, the statement also said Mr. Kennedy, 76, was in “good spirits and full of energy” and walking around his room at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.

Mr. Kennedy’s glioma is in the parietal area in the upper part of the left side of his brain, above the ear. This area of the brain involves motor control and ability to understand language, among other functions.

Malignant brain tumors rarely spread elsewhere in the body. But like the root of a plant, cancerous brain tumors can invade nearby areas in the brain.

Gliomas are categorized by subtypes and by a numerical gradation based on how aggressive they appear. But the doctors did not provide these details or the tumor’s size, saying only that the diagnosis was made by removing a small piece of the cancer in a biopsy, which followed a series of other tests that began after Mr...

--snip--

Mr. Kennedy underwent surgery seven months ago at the same hospital to restore blood flow through a narrowed carotid artery in his neck and to prevent a possible stroke. He had no symptoms at the time, the hospital said.

As part of the testing for that procedure, Mr. Kennedy very likely had an M.R.I. brain scan, Dr. Keith L. Black, director of neurosurgery at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, said in answer to a question. Because gliomas are fast-growing cancers, it is possible...

"Is there some PC rule on FR that says that when an evil man gets sick, we must pretend he was saint?"

Evidently, yes. OJ only murdered one more person than Ted.

He is first NFL player to rush for more than 2,000 yards in a season In 1967, he starred in the 1967 USC vs. UCLA football game and was a Heisman Trophy candidate, though he did not win the award. His 64 yard touchdown run in the 4th quarter tied the game, with the PAT the margin of victory. This was the biggest play in what is regarded as one of the greatest football games of the 20th century http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/O.J._Simpson

Just practicing for OJ's demise.

"Local Specialist says he has type IV, 12-16 months."

I wonder what the prognosis is for someone who has other health problems. Let's face it, Kennedy is far from being in good physical condition. His age, his weight, his circulatory problems, and God knows what other ailments he has, could more than likely reduce that time frame considerably...wouldn't it?

Consider this is a miracle that the Administrative Mods have not locked this thread up with some of the postings that have been posted. It does at times look PC with what has been happening with a number of the Sen. Kennedy threads having been shut down, but the last thing FR needs right now is another verbal lashing from BOR like what had happened last summer when the founder, who right now has his own medical issues to contend with, Jim Robbinson had been interviewed by BOR because it was called a “hate site”. We do not want to give ammo to BOR to take FR to task once again. That is why the AM’s have been “strict”.

I am not a "kennedyphile" and I consider that political dynasty to be close to a criminal enterprise. Having said that, I will say no more regarding Ted and his health problems. My sympathy is reserved for the innocents he leaves behind.

Your reasoning as to the "strict" application of what, at first glance, appears to be excessive zeal in applying a PC speech code now makes sense to me. I appreciate your insight, thank you.

I don't think much of BOR either, his efforts to remain "fair and balanced" leave him looking like an unprincipled neophyte when he gets mugged by a radical lefty. If you agree with everything, you believe in nothing, in the final analysis one must take a stand and defend it.

They’ll all forget Mary Jo Kopechne....

The local TV feed out of Milwaukee was doing a "retrospective" regarding his "career" and went through the incident in detail. They included that he ran away and hid till the next morning, how he tried to talk someone else into taking the blame, and how he ultimately went to jail for two months. And here I thought they were throughly liberal left! Surprise, surprise, apparently they've had enough of the Kennedy's over the last forty years. I guess our liberals in flyover country don't make the "A" list and are considered "charmingly quaint" by the radicals from both left coasts.

GtG

He received a sentence of two months in jail, which was suspended, and lost his driving license for one year.

I'm willing to trust the source here.

How sad. I did not know her parents are gone and how awful that her “ friends” never spoke up for her..

Yes you are correct..about the Nazi sympathy on ol Joe’s part. Is it any wonder his boys turned out the way they did.

Papa Joe may have learned a thing or two from the Nazi's.

From a "Brief History of the Lobotomy"..by Dr. C. George Boree

There have been a few famous cases over the years. For example, Rosemary Kennedy, sister to John, Robert, and Edward Kennedy, was given a lobotomy when her father complained to doctors about the mildly retarded girl’s embarrassing new interest in boys.

Her father never informed the rest of the family about what he had done.

She lived out her life in a Wisconsin institution and died January 7, 2005, at the age of 86. Her sister, Eunice Kennedy Shriver, founded the Special Olympics in her honor in 1968"

I remember this..and Rose was especially angered by this. Rosemary was a pretty girl from the pictures I have seen and her interest would have been pretty normal for most teens and with support and guidence from her mother, had she had the chance, who knows how Rosemary might have been. It is quite a tribute that her sister, Eunice, founded the Special Olympics in her honor..now there is a Kennedy who really did do something worthy of praise.
