DC Gun Ban Ruling Will Aid McCain, GOP

Conventional “wisdom” suggests that the current political environment favors Democrats in 2008. The long Democratic primary between Sens. Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama kept the focus on the candidates and away from the issues. Except for the broad themes of “hope” and “change” few Obama supporters can name a single position articulated by the Illinois senator.

However, certain events may inject issues into the electoral debate that help John McCain and the Republicans. High gasoline prices have changed the dynamics of the national campaign, shifting public opinion toward offshore drilling and blaming Democrats for obstructing efforts to increase domestic energy production.

Similarly, the undeniable success of the troop surge in Iraq and the political progress that is taking place as a result benefits McCain. The presumptive Republican nominee can claim that he was right all along and that Obama and the Democrats are defeatists and should not be trusted with national security matters.

Any day now, the U. S. Supreme Court will issue a ruling in the case of District of Columbia v. Heller, that challenges that city’s total ban on private ownership handguns. No matter what decision is rendered by the high court, McCain and the Republicans will gain an advantage by simply having gun rights discussed during the campaign. Democrats understand that Second Amendment issues are a certain losers for them, which accounts for nearly 70 them in Congress signing onto the amicus brief filed by Vice President Dick Cheney and their Republican colleagues to support striking down the ban.

Should the Supremes affirm that the Second Amendment guarantees the right of an individual to own a firearm, McCain only needs to praise the decision in order to increase his standing among skittish conservatives. If the liberals on the high court win the day, McCain can disagree with them and gain the same advantage. Additionally, the Republican can point to judicial activism as he did in the Boumediene ruling that gave constitutional rights to terrorists held at Guantanamo Bay, another winning issue with conservatives.

Democrats are relying on fear mongering on the economy and the global warming hysteria to carry them to victory in November. However, it is quite possible that real issues might get in the way of that strategy.

Not to mention reality. If the economy continues to perform well, that can't be kept a secret forever. And if we continue to have cool temperatures, eventually people will notice that global temperatures have been declining since 1998.

The Democrats have hitched their wagon to false facts. This will hurt them in the end.

I’m trying to think where the Democrats have a climate that favors them. America is upbeat, I think, on the success in Iraq; the President is slowly withdrawing troops and I don’t even think Iraq will be a factor in the election. Yes, the strength of the dollar will be, of course, but the Democrats have no policies in place to strengthen it.

What must be hammered home, because it is affecting each of us, driver or not, on a daily basis, is the price of oil and Democrats’ ostrich behavior in dealing with it. The question is asked over and over again in the forums here and it cannot be stressed enough by Conservatives in getting their message out: “What happened to that big plan of yours to lower GAS prices?” Statistics show that gas prices jumped, on average, 70 cents in the first 6 years of the Bush Administration ($1.46/gal. to $2.10); after the DUmmie takeover, they have jumped more than double. And still these morons don’t want to drill.

Hammer the DUmmies on ANWR - it would be providing oil now if DUmmie Clinton hadn’t vetoed it, and the DUmmies didn’t prevent a veto override. Get them on immigration, oil and their absurd worship of the global warming doctrine (which, by the way, polls show Americans are by and large turning a deaf ear to).

Grow a spine, RNC - people will be turning a deaf ear to Nobamasiah’s message of “you’re all racist if you attack me” and you need to capitalize on the disgust most Americans seem to have for DUmmie policies.

blaming Democrats for obstructing efforts to increase domestic energy production.

I have not seen any so called polls that show this. Has anyone else?

CNBC Poll from late May gives Congress the most blame (36%) for the oil crisis. (Bush 16%)

I disagree with this analysis. Although I look forward to reading a decision written by Justice Scalia that affirms an individual right to own firearms, I know that a decision like that will take gun control off the table and (hopefully) invalidate most of the inane gun regulations.

The problem for McCain is that he voted to confirm most of the Justices likely to rule that “right of the people”, means power of the states, and/or that “shall not be infringed” has a heretofore unknown addendum, “except when the government thinks it’s reasonable to do so”.
