CNN) -- Democrats have usually conceded the evangelical vote during presidential elections, but Sen. Barack Obama is trying to change that by mobilizing what some call the "Christian left."
As part of his outreach to evangelical voters, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Tuesday will tour the Eastside Community Ministry in Zanesville, Ohio, and give an address on how he plans to build what he calls a "real" partnership between faith-based organizations and the White House if he becomes president.
Obama's outreach to evangelical voters has also included private summits with pastors, an effort to reach out to young evangelicals and a fundraiser with the Matthew 25 political action committee, which describes itself as a group of moderate evangelicals, Catholics and Protestants committed to electing the Illinois Democrat president.
Matthew 25's name is inspired by a biblical passage, in the 25th chapter of the Gospel of Matthew, in which Jesus says, "For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink." The name is meant to signal the group's focus on social justice concerns about hot-button cultural issues.
Brian McLaren, a former pastor who spent 24 years in the pulpit and is now an informal adviser to the Obama campaign, believes a significant portion of evangelical voters are ready to break from their traditional home in the the Republican Party and take a new leap of faith with Obama.

PING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WARREN,OLSTEEN,ETC..................!
“I just think we need to be carefull as Christians about mixing politics in this way and making divisive statements about people who are, right or wrong, our brothers in Christ.”
While I agree in principle, recognize that they may be using your own ethics against you. I think some of these groups will use our sense of Christian ethics in the hope that we will let their statements go unchallenged on the basis of Christian brotherhood. But at the same time, most of these people are either skirting, ignoring, or outright contradicting Biblical statements in the pursuit of their own political power. And did the Apostle Paul not tell Christians to watch and keep judgement on each other when they say and do heretical things? When an Emergent tells us we need to accept gay marriage in the spirit of Christian tolerance, Christians aren’t supposed to say anything?
Being professed Christians doesn’t give these groups immunity from criticism, especially from other Christians.
Being a “true Christian” is having faith in Christ, not being free from sin. None of us are.
True, but you can’t be a Christian and call your sins okay. You have to aknowledge them as sins and repent.
But what if your friends consistently "forget" their supplies because they're too lazy to lug them along every time?
Compare and contrast:
“Jesus is ready to set us free from the heavy yoke of an oppressive way of life. Plenty of wealthy Christians are suffocating from the weight of the American Dream, heavily burdened by the lifeless toil and consumption we embrace. This is the yoke from which we are being set free. And as we are liberated from the yoke of global capitalism, our sisters and brothers in Guatamala, Liberia, and Sri Lanka will also be liberated. Our family overseas, who are making our clothes, growing our food, pumping our oil, and assembling our electronicsthey too need to be liberated from the empires yoke of slavery. Their liberation is tangled up with our own. The new yoke isnt easy. (Its a cross, for heavens sake.) But we carry it together, and it is good and leads us to rest, especially for the weariest traveler.”
Shane Claiborne and Chris Haw, from Jesus for President
“Capitalism is the way of the devil and exploitation. If you really want to look at things through the eyes of Jesus Christ who I think was the first socialist only socialism can really create a genuine society.”
Hugo Chavez
Be careful about believing one should never say a negative word about or to fellow christians.
God's love is discipline as well as mercy. He does not like it when a false belief grows and multiplies thereby causing great harm. Correction is also the job of christians.
Then he gets a quick lesson in capitalism, and maybe even price gouging.
Just like clockwork. Every time a national election rolls around, we start hearing about how religious the Democrat candidates are, and the media loves it. Of course, if the Republican candidate tries this, they’ll be slammed as ‘intolerant’ or ‘too Christian’.
I think you incorrect in lumping Bill Hybels and Rick Warren with the leftists. I disagree with quite a bit of what Hybels does...and to a lesser extent Rick Warren, but they are not liberal. Whatever your view on their ecumenical approach, I do not believe either of them are “liberals” in the classic sense. I reserve that for the likes of Rob Bell...
Unknown, Rick Warren may not be an out and out liberal yet, but is sure appears that he’s been headed in that direction for a couple of years now...
Be sure to share that information with your niece! She may never have thought of it in that way, and it could be very enlightening to her.
I’m sorry but the Eastside Community center is NOT a religious organization and I have no idea why he chose that place to announce this. This is in my hometown and they run a food bank and daycare center but are not affiliated with any church.
Christian left = no such thing.”
Christian left = apostates
“Christian Left” = the deluded... the fallen away.
There is no such thing as a moderate Christian. You either serve the Lord or man.
1 minute satirical Obama video here:

Hurry before some diversity loving (RIGHT!) Obamaniac at YouTube pulls it.
He also said that fundamentalism, including Christian fundamentalism (as defined by the five fundamnetals of the faith), is the enemy of the 21st century.
Warren's associations, endorsements, and activities prove what he is.
Who, but a liberal, would have Obama and Clinton come speak at their church on the issue of curing AIDS?
“Not only voluntary,
INDIVIDUAL, PERSONAL, and JOYFUL giving.
Supporting the coercive/forced confiscation of others property to feed the poor doesnt count at all.”
Agreed.
That paradox on the Left has always astounded me.Even when I was cavorting with some Left wing folks long ago and I would listen to them bemoan the times innocent Vietnamese babies were being napalmed.
I could never understand how they can condemn one form of infanticide In Vietnam and be so blithly accepting of the genocide of millions of the unborn at HOME.
Unlike many on this forum,I think Obama has a caring heart.Thats why his position on late term abortion disturbs me so much.We KNOW Hillary is a heartless you know what but how can a man who claims he is a Christian and a HUMANE soul ignore the horrors of the abortion industry?
Good for your friend. It shows she still has a heart!
