Russian scientists in bid to solve Tunguska Event

Russian scientists will this week attempt to solve the mystery of a giant explosion 100 years ago that turned night to day across western Europe and flattened a large swathe of Siberia.

A century after reindeer herdsmen saw a column of light that shone with the intensity of the Sun moving across the Siberian dawn sky, the Tunguska Event remains one of the modern era's most abiding scientific riddles.
From the X-Files to Indiana Jones, the makers of films and television programmes have ensured that Tunguska remains a byword for conspiracy in the imagination of science fiction buffs.
But even among serious scientists the cause of the explosion remains an enigma, a fact that has allowed the theories to multiply over the years.
The symposium in Russia has drawn together the proponents of some of the most outlandish, perhaps none more so than Yuri Lavbin.
The head of the Tunguska Space Phenomenon Fund has long blamed extraterrestrials for the explosion and in 2004 claimed to have discovered wreckage from their spacecraft.
What the aliens were up to divides Mr Lavbin's followers. The more orthodox suggest they were coming to Earth's rescue by shooting down a meteorite that would have caused far more damage if it had struck the planet.
Others maintain it was a monumental mix-up after aliens on a planet orbiting the star 61-Sygni mistakenly assumed that the 1883 eruption on Krakatoa was an attempt by earthlings to communicate with them.

I am seriously considering having this topic be my Master Thesis for Geology. I currently hold to the belief of an exploding rocky asteroid.
Will you be willing and able to travel to Siberia? Or will you do the research from here?
Don’t know how it will work, I would actually love to Eastern Russia, but as this would be 5 or so years from now, who knows how the political climate will be. I can easily see the Iron Curtain coming up again. If the research can be done here that would be great.
Some attending the conference blamed Nikola Tesla, the eccentric American scientist who said he had developed a death ray – a particle beam weapon capable of moving at the speed of light. They claimed he had been testing it.
An explosive meteorite sounds good, and the possibility that aliens bent on mischief were responsible is certainly mind blowing, but for sheer wow factor I prefer to believe that Tesla did it.
But the death ray and angry thunder god Ogdy are so much cooler. I rather do my degree on a death ray, personally.
Actually, a Russian scientist has already figured out that the Tunguska explosion was caused by a meteorite. Using matchsticks to replicate trees, he was able to show how fast it was moving, what angle it entered the atmosphere at, and what force it exploded with. Also, someone drained the swamp surrounding the area, dug into the crater and found pieces of the meteorite.
(But Mulder still got infected by the virus it was carrying, though, like the others who were infected, he didn't lose his arm.)
Well...the story goes that God cast Satan out of Heaven and INTO the Earth—is that where he hit; after all the Biblical text suggest he was a being of light...? (Only half serious here, but that makes as much sense as some other explanations.)
The mystery was solved long ago by.... The Men In Black!

Why not something else?
Have you read “The Cycle of Cosmic Catastrophes”, written by Firestone, West, and Warwick-Smith?
Their book presents evidence concerning a supernova (Geminga, in the Gemini constellation) that occurred 40,000 years ago, and how its blast has effected our planet ever since. The cover is tacky but hey, what matters is inside. The reviews on Amazon.com are consistently positive but beware! This is a science book with lots of graphs and technical data presented.
Also speaking of this, according to some astronomers the Sun is overdue for a massive solar storm which could act like a temporary EMP type burst and cause massive blackouts and even loss of satellites and telecommunications.
Here’s a puzzler for ya - I was at a meeting a few days ago and Dr. Carl Skinner stated that their investigation of California arboreal history has shown that in 1829, there is not one area of California that did not show that trees had burned. There are even indications it might go up into California. What was that all about?
