Goo-goo-ga-gun: Mom packs heat in baby's stroller

UTICA, N.Y. -

Police say they have never encountered anything like it: a mom pushing a stroller containing an infant, knives, a box cutter and a sawed-off shotgun.

The 29-year-old Utica woman is now in police custody after authorities say she threatened another woman with the weapons. The child has been turned over to Child Protective Services.

“It’s pretty sad when individuals have to put a child at risk by carrying weapons in a stroller, and this type of behavior will not be taken lightly,” Utica Public Safety Commissioner Daniel LaBella said. “In my 20-plus year career, I’ve never seen this type of behavior or incident.”

Here’s what police say occurred:

Stephanie Wilson was pushing her baby in the stroller about 7:30 p.m. Tuesday when she renewed a previous argument with the other woman over money, LaBella said.

As the dispute escalated, the mom pulled the knife from under the stroller and threatened the woman, LaBella said. Wilson’s child was in the stroller at the time, and her older child was walking alongside Wilson, he said.

Then Wilson pulled out a sawed-off shotgun, he said.

LaBella said he did not believe Wilson put the weapons in the stroller to protect herself.

“She had the weapons because she had just been in an argument with an individual, not because she was going to an extreme to protect herself,” he said.

When police later located Wilson, she had put the knife and gun back inside the stroller, LaBella said.

There also were two other knives and a box cutter razor there, he said.

Wilson was charged with three counts of endangering the welfare of a child and one felony count of third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, LaBella said.

Wilson was taken into custody and sent to jail without bail, LaBella said.

LaBella said the youngest child was turned over to the county’s care, while the older child was turned over to a relative.

When you need the police in seconds they will be there in minutes. Perhaps if more mothers were appropriately armed, there would be less violence toward women. BTW, is there room in the stroller or do you have to carry the ammo in the diaper bag?

Utica was one of the worst places I’ve ever lived. It was called “Sin City.” Looks like things haven’t changed much.

I wonder if next she was going to pull out a loaded baby.

Well, if the slogan, “Protect and Serve” was lived up to, then there would be no need for the average citizen to go about their business, armed.

Carrying a gun for self defense isn't an extreme.

Never take a baby to a knife fight.

Never take a baby to a gun fight.

Never take a baby to a fight.

Not true. I for one would not want a police force the size it would take to be able to respond quickly enough to do you any good against and armed thug. Even with a large force, the bad guys would get weapons and would use them for nefarious purposes, and as we all know, when seconds count, the police are only minutes away.

Wellll ... no wonder you're the Public Safety Commisioner imbed .... the other woman was in danger ... not the baby.

I am going to go out on a limb here and say that this woman was probably not a firearms safety instructor.

She stored the weapons in the stroller as a way of avoiding detection (imo). She got into an arguement with another adult and brandished the weapons. In this case the weapon did not discharge accidently (thank god) and blow the little kid or anyone else away. I doubt she is proficient in the use of the sawed off or frequently fires it. Given the modification to the weapon she could have struck many unintended living targets if she had discharged it intentionally or otherwise.

Idiotic chick is idiotic and yeah the kids were in danger being around this moron.
