The RAT Congress will say this is an irresponsible act on the Presidents part and stick to their mantra that We cannot drill our way out of the oil crisis. The news media will hammer home the RAT drum beat and nothing will change. However, what the voters will see is a Republican President trying to help put more oil on the market and bring the cost of oil back down.

thanks much...I know this isn’t the open door to immediate drilling but I do expect prices to drop precipitously. Just the fact that we’re much closer to more supply should ease the price.

“Excuse me, but by buying oil from OPEC, we have been paying for the WOT on BOTH ENDS for DECADES!”

You are probably quite unaware of the massive lay offs in the energy industry at the beginning of this century. That’s ok.

and evidently “you are probably quite unaware” of the tens of thousands of maimed & dead Marines & Soldiers from the WOT but I guess “that’s ok” with you!

I agree, Bush needs to declare an economic emergency and open ANWR to oil drilling.

Yes - and how about something along the lines of making profits on all new wells tax free ? Britain did this just recently to stimulate production. Remember when Internet sales were not taxed to get the Internet up and running?

The oil companies want to develope and sell their product. They don’t like gas being this high. They would like to sell at an affordable price. They are not at fault here, and neither are the speculators. Congress is.

Yeah, it could have been done seven years ago, and it would have accomplished exactly what it accomplishes now, nothing. The only thing he’s done is deprive the Democrats of an excuse for not passing legislation to permit offshore drilling. For the last few months they’ve said, “why should we do something when Bush hasn’t?” Now they’ll have to find something else to hide behind.

And, it probably won’t be the “drilling won’t get us one more barrel in the next ten years” mantra. That one’s getting pretty shop-worn too. Look for some new and innovative excuse for their inaction.

Look! No company would have drilled with oil at $20 a barrel the reservoirs that require the new generation of drilling techniques. Nada, Zip, Zilch!

You are emotional.

I think your analysis is absolutely correct, except the fact that dem voters are uneducated and will still vote for dems even thought they are driving the cost of gas up.

Dem voters vote on feelings. Not on anything serious like National Security and energy policy.

You're exactly right. Pelosi, Ried, et al, have already used that argument. The GOP needs to get off its a$$ and start presenting the other side of the facts. They might start by saying that of those 68 million acres, exploration has shown that most are devoid of oil deposits. In other words, the oil companies paid lease money to the gov't for dry holes. Until the gov't starts giving refunds for those lands, those leases still appear to be on the company books as assets. In some cases, they've kept those acres to gain right-of-way for pipelines and other easement needs.

Finally, the Democrat position is to stick their thumb up their behind and do nothing while the consumer and the economy take it in the shorts. At least drilling now offers the hope and potential of relief. The Dems position does absolutely nothing for the consumer.

Not all of this area that would be opened is deep water requiring special techniques. This would include lots of area that is reachable with jack-ups.

The fact that it took until the last half of his last year in office shows that he is screwing around.

Again, you are emotional and not talking with any rationality. Crude oil in 2001 ranged from $16/barrel to $28/barrel. NO OIL COMPANY WOULD HAVE DRILLED THESE DIFFICULT RESERVOIR THAT WOULD COST $50 PLUS/BARREL TO DRILL.

Everything will depend on how Mccain and the RNC handle this issue in ads and on the campaign trail. If they call attention to the fact that the RATS are the ones standing in the way of more oil supply and hopefully lower prices MAYBE it will resonate with voters. one can only hope.

After looking at the latest numbers on Congress’ approval rating, I seriously think we are seeing the true “dem voters”, the truly hardcore, dyed in the wool leftists. We all know that it is a small but vocal minority. I thought it would be higher but 9% seems in the ballpark.

You are very correct on the feelings versus thinking aspect of the democratic voters. As Rush always says, it’s easier to feel than to think..it’s the cowards way of doing things.

” No company would have drilled with oil at $20 a barrel?”

and before I leave you to your ignorance...
in the 70’s we were only importing 20% of our oil;
so, genius, somebody in America must have been drilling that other 80% for less than $20 a barrel!

Class Dismissed!

"Not all of this area that would be opened is deep water requiring special techniques. This would include lots of area that is reachable with jack-ups."

In 2001 crusde was selling for $16-$26/barrel. The industry was going through massive layoffs. Any new reservoirs developed would have had to be very easy pickings.

"and before I leave you to your ignorance..."

Given that I am in the industry with an insiders view I'd say you are the one coming off quite ignorant and emotional. Here's atip for you. With each passing year each reservoir found is usually smaller and more difficult to get to, hence, more costly.
