I understood that while the crude oil supply is critical, our lack of refining capacity was the bigger issue and that environmental regulations and NIMBY attitudes would likely keep new refineries from coming on-line, negating gains of increased crude supply. Or is that an urban legend perpetuated by the Left?
The Congressional Ban on offshore oil drilling expires at the end of September.

The devil is in the details. And based on the BS promises we have been getting on border security for years, I am going to assume this is political grandstanding until we see the details proving it's not.
When I see a rig going in, then I'll believe the ban is lifted.

Bush and Cheney tried in 2002. The Republicans voted strong for it the Democrats strong against it. You need a supermajority to win. The Democratic position of Phase 1 - conserve, Phase 3 - Energy Independence is being exposed as a sham, because what the hell is Phase 2?!?!? The good news, this will force government out of the way although I would wager a lot of this ignorant mental dwarves in Washington won’t be thrown out until 2012 and they will fight it tooth and nail in-between.
Refining capacity is a huge problem..... but the root of this problem lies more with the simple fact that the demand in oil is rising faster then the supply can keep up.
Believe it or not, speculators are getting crushed right now..... they’re in trouble.... here’s an article that will give you an idea of the squeeze they’re feeling right now:

It is a political ploy to put more pressure on Congress. They Democratic leadership in Congress keeps trying to point the finger at Bush for the high oil prices.
This is Bush's way of pointing back and making it clear that it is not his administration getting in the way of increased domestic oil exploration and production, and trying to force Congress to act.
Bush and the minority Republicans in Congress are trying to force a vote on the issue. They want the Democrats to go on record opposing increasing domestic oil production in an election year with soaring oil prices.
The Democrats, with the help of some Republicans that pander to the "environmental" lobby have created these high oil prices for us with their policies. They don't have a solution to the high prices, because the high prices are desirable to a large percentage of the liberal lobbying groups.
Therefore the Democrats don't really want to solve the problem, they just want to redirect the blame on someone else.

Congresses ban automatically expires yearly!! If they don’t have the votes to renew their yearly ban, as of Sept. 30th, and that includes enough votes to overide a veto, they’re screwed. This is great news. Bush is not quite as stupid as everyone thinks. Almost, but not quite. This gambit may be his first and last great move of his presidency.

This statement assumes several things which probably are not true. The oil industry has probably been aware of this building crisis for a while and may realize we cannot drill our way out of this problem. Alternatives are needed and most of the companies have already started to explore them, including cellulosic ethanol, solar, and biobutanol. In addition, the high oil prices are just making the oil companies richer, and pushing the public to urge their representatives to open up restricted oil land and sea. Incidentally, I don’t think that oil company profits are the chief cause of the run-up in price. For that check out the available information on oil ETFs and the supersized purchasing instruments promoted in January 2007 which are being used by non oil users. Non end users have jumped from 30% to over 70% of the oil commodity market in the past several years.

This would be ideal. But, didn't oil companies in the U.S. stop drilling years ago because they couldn't compete with Mid. East? So they had to stop drilling because it cost too much.
If we now drill successfully, can't you see the Mid. East oil companies doing the same thing again, lower the price of a barrel, and again force U.S. to close down?

And if Congress doesn’t go along and lift the ban at least the American people will know who and what they are voting for in November. There will be no excuses like “well, I didn’t know.”

Exactly. Also, the Governor’s blocking liquified coal should be flogged. That oil heating crisis and the airlines pain could have been outright averted as liquified coal can be used for deisel engines and heating oil. Hey, where’ all that love for Hugo Chavez gone these days?!? As predicted, it is non-existant but the Dems sure got to look like good these last couple of years to a handful of old ladies.

Then the legal eagles must become Patriots as well and go on the counter-offensive. All Americans must decide if we want to continue this historical experiment of freedom or if we want a continuation of 10,000 years of the gods and clods government system. If you want it, be prepared to serve.
Look at the future’s market for oil. It’s about $140 per barrel through 2016. The global market is predicting our do-nothing-government will ‘stay the course’ for the forseeable future. Let’s hope millions of people worldwide are wrong about the American people.
In-between heavy lifting by the little guy will crop up on innovation. Let’s also hope the little guy is no longer ignored by the investment and banking community. The old tall, dying trees are blocking the sunlight from reaching the saplings and seeds. Now the forest has started to burn. Let’s hope the government GETS OUT OF THE WAY instead of attempting to put out the old trees fires with a squirt gun... Not fair the little guy has to do all the heavy lifting but history tells us we will whether we like it or not.

I believe it sunsets in September unless Congress takes action to renew the ban. It's then up to the Republican Senators to block it.
Exactly. Al Gore preached about coal liquification in 1999 when he was running for office. Now the head vampire says that oil and coal are dirty and ruining our planet and Harry Reid and 100 million voters agree. In fact, so does Russia, who is not renewing Exxon Mobile’s land permits to build a natural gas and oil pipeline there. Great global example of how government’s SHOULD lie to confuse the masses. Even the great propoganda artists of Russia are impressed.
I hope you’re right. The dems might be better off to let it die a quiet death and let the drilling begin. They could lose their shirts in the election if they hold a vote to extend.
Republicans must open there wallets for the Internet, something the Dems caught onto years ago and Republicans have not.

America's energy demands have grown, and America's energy exploration has decreased. Some of which was under the fantasy of finding alternatives to oil.
I have absolutely no problem with oil companies making a profit off of their product. Oil is too cheap and plentiful to ignore, unless complete misery is what we want.
Relying on a yet to be invented, non-existing and cheaper alternatives to oil, is self defeating.
