The fact is that the economy of Nevada depends on cheap gasoline/diesel/JetA prices.
Reid probably had a call from Steve Wynn, to ‘splained the reality of the economics to Reid. And Reid suddenly had an epiphany...
This is also why Reid wants that high speed rail from SoCal to Vegas. Trouble is, that won’t really do the trick. Californians don’t “do” mass transit. They just don’t. You could give them a magic carpet bus to get to work and they just won’t take it. They don’t like to carpool (which is why they keep adding new classes of drivers who can use the diamond lanes on the freeway - so they won’t be used at only 15% of capacity), they don’t like to use mass transit, they don’t like anything but being in their own cars to go to work, play or anything else.
I’m hoping the backlash against the anti-energy RATS is deep and severe.
