Anthrax suspect dies in apparent suicide

One of the nation’s top biodefense researchers has died in Maryland from an apparent suicide, just as the Justice Department was to file criminal charges against him in the anthrax mailing assaults of 2001 that killed five, the Los Angeles Times has learned.

Bruce E. Ivins, 62, who for the past 18 years worked at the government’s elite biodefense research laboratories at Fort Detrick, Md., had been informed of the impending prosecution, people familiar with Ivins, his suspicious death and with the FBI investigation said.

Ivins’ name had not been disclosed publicly as a suspect in the case that disrupted mail service and Senate business three weeks after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The Maryland scientist had for years played a pivotal role in research to improve anthrax vaccines, preparing anthrax formulations used in experiments on animals.

Regarded as a skilled microbiologist, Ivins also had helped the FBI analyze the powdery material recovered from one of the anthrax-tainted envelopes sent to a U.S. senator’s office in Washington, D.C.

Ivins died Tuesday at Frederick Memorial Hospital after having ingested a massive dose of prescription Tylenol mixed with codeine, said a friend and colleague who declined to be identified out of concern, he said, that he would be harassed by the FBI.

The death -- without any mention of suicide -- was announced to Ivins’ colleagues at the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases, or USAMRIID, through a staffwide e-mail.

Strat...IMO what happens is that with certain high value skill sets you will see a tolerance for a lot more BS that would normally get somebodies card pulled.

/Just IMO from nonsense I have seen over the years.

I hope he was the one too, I’m not sure though.

I would just love to know the motive, if it was this man, what would the motive be?

If there is an direct attack on these bio-scientists it is more likely by a leftists that believes these type of scientists are better off dead. I hear it often from leftists but have not seen it take place yet.

About dentists death rates. a quick Internet search:
For some odd reason white male doctors have a high suicide rate.

You're quite right...What's the motive....I'd think any attack by this man would be personal...NOT directed to a media outlet....NOT directed to Congresioanl Chambers...

Too whom they were directed is totally irrelevant...IT's to WHERE they were directed....

Excepting perhaps Stevens...Somehow, I think that was "personal", something to do with ATTA...that Stevens was NOT part of the original plan and that someone "peppered" something that Stevens ingested.

When I was just looking up a link I read that supposedly they (Feds, I guess) are ready to release more information on this case shortly. I hope we gain more understanding of it. We have more unanswered questions than anything else.

How nice. Now the FBI won’t have to try to case.

NBC is reporting the big break was the development of DNA fingerprinting techniques that linked the attack anthrax to a specific container at Ft. Detrick linked to Ivins.

The pattern of anthrax contamination at AMI makes it pretty obvious it was related to something that came in through the mail room.

I need a motive...than a clear path to the mailboxes...and where did he get it from?? Our labs or an outside source?? And why keep after Hatfill all the time??

Something just doesn't sound right unless....Someone did some mind bending on this guy...and "HE DID WHAT THEY SAID"...a matter of life or death (of his family?)

There is apparently going to be a delay of several days in the FBI release of information, because all the evidence is Grand Jury and under seal; many names will need to be redacted before the evidence can be released.

Weird. John HK used to spell "gubbmint" the same way. I mean, before he was banned, of course.

Speaking of hilarious, you should read some of his old posts on Stephen Hatfill. They're a riot.

I would tend to think from the list at steven quayles site most of the deaths are unsolved. We have no idea of how many Manchurian type people are here in this country.

“Wow. Hydrocodone OD. Not a fun way to go.”

Is there any way to go that could be considered fun?

I’m no pharmacist or coroner, but why would taking a massive dose of painkillers be an extraordinarily bad demise?

Looking over the list some more:
There are people on that list that shouldn't be on that list such as this guy:

"Dr. Mallove was convinced it was only a matter of months before the world would actually see a free energy device."

There are a few others that are not really scientists on the list.

When i see things like this I tend to write it off. I am sorry.

That isn’t to say there are some serious questions like the case with Todd Kauppila is a mystery.

the article makes pretty clear that it was determined it had a very direct provenance to Ft. Detrick.

The FBI profiler in the DC sniper case wrote something like 50 pages that made it even more than “pretty clear” that two white boys were shooting up the Beltway.

So you tell me why Irvin would have included the madrassa-taught “Death to America, Death to Israel” incantation in his mailings.

The FBI was so utterly hellbent on proving that a white scientist at Detrick did it that they spent thousands draining an entire pond near Frederick and found ABSOLUTELY NOTHING for their effort.

Here’s a thought. If you want to find the anthrax atacker, look for a middle eastern or Asian Muslim not an American scientist. Unless, of course, you believe the CIA or Jews brought the WTC down.

Now....Does the family OWN all his papers etc...Can they stop the FBI from rendering anything damaging on the man?

Something just isn't hitting me right on this. The man remains "innocent until proven guilty" so what court could prove him guilty and convict him. How do you convict a dead man?

What is your definition of a real scientists?

Where I work we have pedigree engineers and then we have people who have come up from the floor so to say and have more common sense and piratical application knowledge rather than book learning.

Try telling your Average Joe/Jane that Mohammed Atta tried to get a $650,000 loan from the Department of Agriculture to turn a twin-engine passenger plane into a crop-duster, or that he lived within three miles of the American Media building in Boca Raton, or that he was prescibed Cipro after going to a doctor with red, swollen hands. Try telling them that Ahmed Alhaznawi was treated for cutaneous anthrax in Fort Lauderdale in June, 2001 (Alhaznawi had also attempted to get a crop-dusting plane that summer). They’ll look at you like you’re talking about some fabled swamp monster.

I think it’s pretty obvious the hijackers were trained at Salman Pak and given Iraqi anthrax. And if that truth is ever known, the case against the Iraq war and the entire democrat left crumbles like a house of cards. That’s why this is the most politicized murder investigation since the Kennedy assassination. An entire political party’s fortunes are dependent on one, and only one, outcome.

Well said.

I don’t care what kind of degree they have. Anyone that claims we can make a free energy device has a screw lose.
