Skip to comments.House Dems turn out the lights but GOP keeps talking(More info)

Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and the Democrats adjourned the House and turned off the lights and killed the microphones, but Republicans are still on the floor talking gas prices.
Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) and other GOP leaders opposed the motion to adjourn the House, arguing that Pelosi's refusal to schedule a vote allowing offshore drilling is hurting the American economy. They have refused to leave the floor after the adjournment motion passed at 11:23 a.m. and are busy bashing Pelosi and her fellow Democrats for leaving town for the August recess.
At one point, the lights went off in the House and the microphones were turned off in the chamber, meaning Republicans were talking in the dark. But as Rep. John Shadegg (R-Ariz..) was speaking, the lights went back on, and the microphones were turned on shortly afterward.
But C-SPAN, which has no control over the cameras in the chamber, has stopped broadcasting the House floor, meaning no one is witnessing this except the assembled Republicans, their aides, and one Democrat, Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio), who has now left.
Only about a half-dozen Republicans were on the floor when this began, but the crowd has grown to about 20 now, according to Patrick O'Connor.
"This is the people's House," Rep, Thaddeus McCotter (R-Mich.) said. "This is not Pelosi's politiburo."
Democratic aides were furious at the GOP stunt, and reporters were kicked out of the Speaker's Lobby, the space next to the House floor where they normally interview lawmakers.
"You're not covering this, are you?" complaing one senior Democratic aide. Another called the Republicans "morons" for staying on the floor.

202-225-0100 and let Nancy and her idiotic message boy know to turn the lights back on because America is watching.
And... of course... CSPAN is not covering this.
We need a list of the twenty Congress critters who are staying on, so we can send them thank you cards...
That is beautiful.
Somebody needs to get an internet camera hookup in there and broadcast this stuff to the country. Let everybody see how the Pelosi Democrats shut down debate and leave the country’s economy in the lurch to go on their fabulous vacations. Is Pelosi using her taxpayer-supplied jet to head back to the wine country and her multimillion dollar estate?
This is hilarious. I’m pleased with this turn of events.
I’m seething at Pelosi. Someone needs to just slap her down. SLAP her down like a dog.
Keep up the pressure!! Tell everyone you know about this. Americans needs to know that Peolsi stands in the way of lower gas prices. She is taking away our representation by not allowing a vote.
“This is the people’s House,” Rep, Thaddeus McCotter (R-Mich.) said. “This is not Pelosi’s politiburo.”
Man I would have *loved* to have seen that!
But C’mon...Surely there are Video cameras the Republicans can bring in, to record this Revolt against this Tyrannical
overthrowing of the will of the People, of their Constitutional representatives..by the usurpers Pelosi and Reid and their “ruling class” ilk???
I’m enjoying this immensely, too. I’d love to see them start a sit-in, bring in sleeping bags, and let the Capitol Police try to throw them out. It’s particularly funny that Pelosi has her little drudges running around trying to keep the media from covering it.
Bush should call Congress back into session
Why won’t President Bush call a Special Session. Is there some strategy here such as the Dems geting blamed in the Fall or just that Bush doesn’t want the open conflict?
A conservative sit-in in the making.....If I lived near Washington I’d drive there and show my support. The pond scum democrats are screwing America!!!
All the conservatives in DC ARE in the capitol building right now.
I think it’s something like 9:1 liberal to conservative ratio in DC. Or maybe it’s Democrat to Republican but still.
Great YouTube footage on Instapundit of Mitch McConnell making a series of unanimous consent requests regarding drilling and increasing the trigger price every time there was a Demo objection. He gets all the way to ten bucks a gallon. Pretty funny stuff, right out of the Demo playbook.
Get on the phones and make noise.
Contact your papers and news outlets and make noise.
Same question was put to Rush today.
He said it was not President Bush’s style to do that.
Anybody know where Nancy’s vacationing? Anybody know how much gas it takes to fly Nancy and her entourage to wherever she has gone?
The Republicans should get this printed on a 30-foot long banner and hang it up over the Speaker's chair in the House, then watch the plastic in "Save the Planet" Pelosi's face melt when she returns from her vacation.
Pelosi's panic and desperation are becoming palpable. And it is great to see!
More updates to this post:
Update 4: The scene on the floor is kind of crazy. Normally, members are not allowed to speak directly to the visitor galleries, and visitors are prohibited from cheering. But in this case, the members are walking up and down on the floor during their speeches, standing on chairs. The visitors are cheering loudly. Some members even brought in visitors, who are now sitting on the House floor in the seats normally filled by lawmakers, cheering and clapping. Very funny.
Democrats faced a choice here: Should they leave the cameras on and let Republicans rip Pelosi & Co. on C-SPAN, or should they leave the cameras off and let the Republicans have their “tantrum,” as one Democratic aide characterized it, with the cameras off? So the cameras are off, but Republicans, and the crowd, are clearly enjoying the scene.
Update 5: Republicans are literally hugging each other on the House floor. Rep. Don Manzullo (R-Ill.), not normally known as a distinguished orator, just gave a rousing speech, accusing Democrats of stifling dissent. He referenced President John Quincy Adams, who returned as a House member after being defeated in his bid for presidential reelection. Waving his arms and yelling, Manzullo brought the crowd (including a lot of staff shipped in by GOP leaders to fill up the place), and he left the floor to hugs from his colleagues. You don’t see that up here every day.
Update 6: Rep Devin Nunes (R-Calif.) just pretended to be a Democrat. He stood on the other side of the chamber and listed all of the GOP bills that the Dems killed.
He then said, “I am a Democrat, and here is my energy plan” and he held up a picture of an old VW Bug with a sail attached to it. He paraded around the House floor with the sign while the crowd cheered.
Unfortunately it is and this stunt by the GOP won't change things. [I will stand corrected if there is widespread coverage of this in the MSM]
“And... of course... CSPAN is not covering this.”
Newt is on Sean’s show now and just said that Nancy Pelosi cut the CSPAN coverage and turned off the lights and left!
Newt is saying President Bush should go before the American people on Monday, talk about what the DEM leaders did today and call them back.
What upsets me is that I don’t see this being covered on major news websites. CBS has picked it up, and it appears a really watered down version of it is on msnbc, but I wasn’t even able to find it on the Fox news website. Looks like all blogs mostly.
Five weeks of summer vacation on my TAXPAYER dollars, and the worthless B@STARDS didn't do a d@mn thing to alleviate America's current energy headache.
That POS Pelosi has time to consult state sponsors of International Terrorism, but she doesn't have time to help America expand our energy resources.
She should be investigated, arrested and imprisoned for TREASON after her escapade to Syria.
I urge all Freepers to use the phone number above and let your voices be heard!!!
You are right. The House Republicans need to make loads of noise about this and exactly what happened today!
PLEASE EVERYONE make the calls! I got through to Pelosis office (1-202-225-0100) and also called and left a message for President Bush (1-202-456-1111) to urge him to call Congress back for a special session. If we all do it, it will help. We need to make noise!
“This is the people’s House,” Rep, Thaddeus McCotter (R-Mich.) said. “This is not Pelosi’s politiburo.”
It’s about time someone in the GOP grew a pair.
WHY IS C-SPAN NOT COVERING THIS???
THIS IS THEIR JOB- TO COVER THA HOUSE AND SENATE
NOT JUST THE PARTS THEY LIKE
Here is all the contact info for C-Span! They change the numbers often but the emails are all correct! C-Span Contact information:. Phone: (202) 737-3220
The assembled tourists, aides and members in the chamber gave Price and his compatriots a standing ovation. They left the chamber to shouts of “USA! USA! USA!”
Damit Nancy, you are obviously good for something.
You and your dufus little buddy reid have so excited the right — you have almost certainly reversed what could have otherwise been a catastrophic election year for the right. May I be the first to Thank You!
Thank God you two morons have literally snatched defeat from the jaws of victory - hell sweetie, that deserves a standing ovation...bravo, bravo.
Christmas this year is coming to the right — on election day...
What does that mean *
I like it. Our reps should do more teach-ins like this.
I read earlier that this is not Bush’s style. The President may have greater tolerance for letting the scum on the left walk all over his face and tear his reputation to shreds than most people but I am getting damned sick and tired of watching him count the days down to retirement....He doesn’t have ths spine to get involved in some long overdue political hardball????
Exactly, but he doesn't have the balls to do it; he wants Nancy to love him.
Could he mean “”’s?
Update 4: Republican leaders just sent out a notice looking for a bullhorn, and leadership aides are trying to corral all the members who are still in town to come speak on the floor and sustain this one-sided debate.
Also, Republicans can thank Shadegg for turning on the microphones the first time. Apparently, the fiesty Arizona conservative started typing random codes into the chamber's public address system and accidentally typed the correct code, allowing Republicans brief access to the microphone before it was turned off again.
Good for the GOP who at least had the fortitude to do this.
I only wish it lasted longer.
