AND NOW . . . amidst billowing clouds of fragrant, aromatic first- and second-hand premium cigar smoke. . . it is time for . . . that harmless, lovable little fuzz ball, the highly-trained broadcast specialist, having more fun than a human being should be allowed to have, from behind the golden EIB microphone, firmly ensconced in the prestigious Attila-the-Hun chair at the Limbaugh Institute of Advanced Conservative Studies, with talent on loan from G-d, at the cutting-edge of societal evolution, with half his brain tied behind his back — just to make it fair, the all-knowing, all-caring, all-sensing, all-feeling, Maha-Rushie! America's Anchorman, Truth Detector, Doctor of Democracy, and Chief of the Patriotism Police. He is the man who runs America. He knows the Democrats like every square inch of his glorious naked body. He is ready to do what he was born to do--That's host. Get ready to what you were born to do--That's listen (and post your comments on the Rush Limbaugh LIVE Radio Thread).

Are you related to Barack Obama?

Yep. I'm a human being.

Are you sure? Not that you are a human being, but that this makes you related.

A 42-gallon barrel of oil makes about 19.5 gallons of gasoline. If we waste 3.56 million gallons of gas a day due to tire inflation, then that equates to about 183,000 bbls of oil, a far cry from 4 million.

I wonder how much gas is wasted sitting in traffic? I am sure it is much, much more.

OMG- Obama is losing it:

“Why did I start running for president? I got hit on the head with a rock,” the Illinois senator told a seven-year-old girl who questioned him on his motivation at a “town hall” meeting in Indiana.

“When I woke up, I’d made my announcement and then it was too late. No, I’m teasing,” Obama said to laughs.

There are figures of 2.8 million gallons/day based on the highest range estimate of 10% underinflated in the whole fleet likely on the road daily.

The real number is more apt to be around 600-700 thousand bbl/day of crude.

4.4 million bbl/day is ridiculous. If this number were to represent the high range of 10% then it would stand to reason that the other 90% was used as well for 39.6 million bbl/day which is twice the total used for all petroleum uses.

As of 2007, thanks to Congress, all vehicles must have tire inflation monitoring systems, which usually consist of a sensor and radio transmitter in each wheel. The trend now is to fill these tires with nitrogen, a practice long used in aviation (I’m a licensed pilot and aircraft mechanic). Nitrogen is dry (no water) and is less susceptible to pressure variations due to temperature, which often causes the stupid tire light on the dash to come on and freak out people. Over-inflating is very dangerous for the reasons you’ve already heard. The issue on tune-ups was handled yesterday on Rush’s show. HTH

I have never seen such pessismism from you over the American entrepenurial strength and power we have in this country over developing new power sources. Lets develop the new technology here and make money from it instead of some other country(ies). Rush, Americans don’t hate “big oil” they have come to the realization something new needs to be developed to replace it down the road or it will put our economy in shambles.

YEP! You have NAILED it! Rush is the eternal pessimist. And some Americans DO HATE Big Oil. There is not one other energy source on the market today that can do what oil does. If you know of one, I would love to hear.

FACT: the American Energy Act takes an 'all of the above' approach to US becoming energy independent. While we are researching and developing alternatives, we should ALSO be drilling, building new refineries and building nuclear plants!

Further, how would we actually implement tire inflation improvement nationwide? Set up government-run “tire inflation” check points for people to drive into, to make sure they’re “doing their part”?

Or maybe BIG GOVERNMENT can write ANOTHER law FORCING BIG AUTO to make it so that the tires are always properly inflated.....

There are some good figures on-line. US Gummint Petroleum Basic Statistics (data for 2007 except where noted)can be found at:
http://www.eia.doe.gov/basics/quickoil.html

Date Last Updated/Reviewed: July 2008
Next Update/Review: July 2009
Sample data:
U.S. Petroleum Consumption 20,680,000 barrels/day
U.S. Motor Gasoline Consumption 9,286,000 barrels/day (390 million gallons/day)

If it is true that there could be a four percent reduction in gasoline use (say, if everyone was previously too uninformed to properly inflate their tires now did so) this probably would save much less than 2% of the total petroleum used. Note that this requires that absolutely everyone needed a political speech to instruct them concerning their driving habits.
