Shoot First, Ask Later - In Prince George's, a drug bust goes awry.
Washington Post ^ | August 7, 2008 | Masthead Editorial

Posted on 08/07/2008 6:50:55 PM PDT by neverdem

THE DRUG raid by Prince George's County law officers on the home of Berwyn Heights Mayor Cheye Calvo last week was a Keystone Kops operation from start to finish.

Acting on a tip that a 32-pound package of marijuana had been sent by Federal Express from Arizona to Mr. Calvo's home (addressed to his wife, Trinity Tomsic), Prince George's police swung into action. Which is to say they got on the phone, calling law enforcement agencies to see who might have a SWAT team available to bust the unsuspecting Calvo family. (It seems the police department's own team was tied up.) After being turned down at least once, they finally struck a deal with the Prince George's Sheriff's Office, whose track record with domestic disputes is extensive but whose experience with drug busts is slight. And it showed.

When the FBI gets involved, it isn’t to assign blame to law enforcement - it is to help cover the tracks.

Local LEO’s do a shabby job of destroying or altering evidence.

The FBI are professionals.

@ Rad1 :

GESTAPO

That’s right. Or Stasi or whatever name this group of people deserves. The “protect and serve” element in this action gone wrong is ....well, it’s not there. It has nothing to do with enforcing the law. The law should be upheld, of course, but law is what gives a nation a degree of civilization and should be the guideline to both citizens AND law enforcement agencies.

The one that issued the warrant should have known better that to throw a SWAT unit at a soft target. Bad show, and I do hope that someone will be held accountable.

“Those two look like a couple of happy puppies.”

My border collie just loves labs (he wrestles with them and gets “labbed” thus needing a bath). I can’t remember ever meeting an aggressive lab.

What is it Standard Operating Procedure to kill all dogs in a drug raid? You keep hearing about it (for example dogs of uninvolved owners killed when LEOs cut across yards during a bust).

I’m thinking the best re-education might involve a dead cop or two.

Just sayin’

This crap will not stop until one good example of a city being bankrupted is made, and the officers involved are placed in financial servitude for the rest of their lives. They can’t work for the injured parties if they are dead.

This is _no different_ than the “we were following orders” argument at Nuremberg. In our (or most) armed services, following an order that is illegal puts YOU at fault also. Why is that not true in any of these cases?

If you look at your auto/health insurance, you will probably find a clause that voids any coverage if the claim involves damage/injury incurred during the commission of a crime. Municipal liability carriers need to start writing such a clause into their policies.

"Because they enjoyed it. It was fun for them to kill the dogs."

At his press conference yesterday, the mayor said practically the same thing. He said that it seemed to him that the police shot the dogs for sport.

I found the transcript of the mayor's remarks of yesterday and here is the exact quote with a little extra that I had forgotten and which, IMO, makes the fact that the dogs were killed even more atrocious.

"Sheriff Jackson said yesterday that his deputies were "engaged" by our dogs. This is simply false. The deputies opened fire and executed our dogs the very second they broke down our front door. The thoughtless execution of Payton and Chase was premeditated, without provocation, and appears to have been done for sport.

The officers were aware of the presence of our dogs before they broke down our front door. They had seen Payton earlier when the undercover officer delivered the package to our house. They had seen me walk both dogs through the neighborhood moments before they invaded our home. In fact, I waved to them.

Every home should have a "suitable" barrier which causes the unauthorized entrants (sanctioned or otherwise) to spend at least three minutes breaching, and make enough noise to alert the occupants, during which time they should retrieve weapons, which should be nearby and ready.

"One of these days".... the above will happen. They'll kick in the wrong door and take just a little too long doing it and lose several men in the process.

It's like Squantos says...."eventually you'll win the home invasion lottery." Eventually, the jack booted thugs will kick in the wrong door at "o-dark-thirty" and have a real "oh-shit!" sort of moment.

"suitable" barrier

the best I could do in this old farmhouse would be to embed claymores in the walls of the foyer...but that would be illegal...

which is why leo prolly is hesistant to invade the 'big fishs' home who has money to burn and doesnt give a ratzazz about society at all, while choosing the soft targets instead...

the police here are stupid.

they investigated my laptop burglary and concluded i stole it!

you should have seen these two! he, probably 275-300 lbs, she, probably 250. her cruiser tilted.

i waited 14 days and paid $17.00 to get the report and complained to their superivisor.

he called me several days later. i told him, not only am i insulted, but now the insurance company will not pay me.

he said, oh don’t worry. i know you did not steal your own computer—you gave us the serial number.

the insurance co paid.

If anybody recalls...there is a FREEPER in Baltimore that had the Maryland Transit {Airport] police come to his door and arrested him...took his computer....a legal handgun...and marched him off because they thought he had phoned in a bomb threat to the Baltimore Airport.

Of course it wasn’t him. The police googled George Orwell and his name popped up....as he is an avid Orwell fan.

Long story short....he’s got a multi-million dollar lawsuit pending against them.

PS: Good Luck George!

Some people think these kind of measures are necessary if we are to win the War on Dogs.

In a country where people have and exercise the right to keep and bear arms in defense of their homes and families, a "dynamic entry" raid of a home by anyone, including law enforcement is a potentially dangerous proposition. The more law enforcement employs and comes to rely on these tactics, the more they will be motived to find ways to restrict and discourage people from exercising that right.

i am just sick about this. what is wrong with the police in this country...and i have in the past been a supporter but these days between the militarization of our forces, the constant stories regarding taser abuse, and their use by counties as income producers...i am really in fear of them.

didnt see whether anyone else brought up this issue....this couple was white. is there any hint of racism or does PG treat all middle class couples the same regardless of color?

whatever happened to due process and actually asking questions before you proceed to slaughter the family pets, tie up the women, and beat the men? God help us. honestly.

IF SOMEONE SAID THEY WERE WILLING TO PROTEST i would literally take a day off and stand outside this county building until this jerk of a county executive says they will apologize. i cannot believe these guys.

Even my dad, a Korean war vet and classic law and order conservative, is starting to look very skeptically at LE because of the frequency of crap like this. Then LEOs and their defenders come on these threads and blame citizens-at-large for the worsening attitudes toward cops.

It reminds me of some muslims who blame non-muslims for negative attitudes. Their criticism of the outrageous actions of their co-religionists is tepid at best — instead it’s all of our faults for being “haters.” /eyeroll
