Shoot First, Ask Later - In Prince George's, a drug bust goes awry.
Washington Post ^ | August 7, 2008 | Masthead Editorial

Posted on 08/07/2008 6:50:55 PM PDT by neverdem

THE DRUG raid by Prince George's County law officers on the home of Berwyn Heights Mayor Cheye Calvo last week was a Keystone Kops operation from start to finish.

Acting on a tip that a 32-pound package of marijuana had been sent by Federal Express from Arizona to Mr. Calvo's home (addressed to his wife, Trinity Tomsic), Prince George's police swung into action. Which is to say they got on the phone, calling law enforcement agencies to see who might have a SWAT team available to bust the unsuspecting Calvo family. (It seems the police department's own team was tied up.) After being turned down at least once, they finally struck a deal with the Prince George's Sheriff's Office, whose track record with domestic disputes is extensive but whose experience with drug busts is slight. And it showed.

I’m so sick of this freakin’ crap. what the hell is wrong with these people? I used to be quite a supporter of all of our law enforcement groups but I am really starting to turn the corner.

I will not be surprised if something like this turns into a major anti police riot one day.
Crap like this is why I tuned from once supporting the war on drugs to now supporting total drug legalization, the cures worse then the disease

And what do you think would happen if US Marines pulled a similar raid on the home of an Iraqi mayor?

And don’t kid yourselves, the federal police aren’t much better.

All of them involved should be fired, pensions terminated, and do jail time.

Bump.

Wow, everybody jumped on that one, didn't they!

Honest mistake to make, it does look vaguely like a veterinary halter, though those aren't worn on the street.

I've never used a Gentle Leader because I'm worried about neck injuries -- my Labs are balls of fire compared to your average English Lab. But I'm also not worried about using prong or choke collars (or electronic collars for that matter) -- the folks who go for the Gentle Leaders tend to be really worried about humane treatment, don't ever use negative reinforcement and stick to things like clicker training.

Which is a really ironic thing about this situation -- these sweet people who were worried about using a "cruel" collar on a dog get SWATted by a bunch of damned idiots who proceed to be crueller to the dogs than they ever imagined anybody could be.

That's the problem right there in a nutshell.

The police can't tell the difference any more between civilian law enforcement and combat operations against hostiles. Can you?

It’s just a darn shame.

I had no idea what the mayor and wife looked like when I read the news earlier.

Seeing the photo with the dogs makes it even more ludicrous...and heartbreaking.

It’s all about bandwith for running the site. Check out FR’s posting guidelines which explain everything. Regardless, I don’t personally have a problem with duplicate posts, hours apart, as long as someone doesn’t get carried away.

All of them involved should be fired, pensions terminated, and do jail time.

That's so, but what will happen is pretty much the opposite.

I will bet you dollars to doughnuts that at least one of these LEO transgressors will get a freaking citation, award, or medal in the next two years.

Lose their jobs, their pensions? You're joking, right?

Do jail time? Please.

I am sick to DEATH about hearing about wimp cops who go in and kill the family pomeranian because they were supposedly too “terrified” to do anything else.

Nasty men with nasty tempers....

And wasn’t the JBT who stomped on the kitten a WOMAN?

Stomping a kitten?

Hadn't heard that one before.

Were there any consequences?

Too many police think they are military engaging the enemy. They need to be re-educated with hefty damages, firings, and loss of pensions.

I'm thinking the best re-education might involve a dead cop or two.

Just sayin'

The cops just might actually be in trouble this time. You just can’t run around doing this sort of thing to people who look like that.

Having done both, I can still tell the difference.

But then again I’m old. We had common sense once upon a time.

Not that I recall, and I can’t find the story online, only numerous references to it.

They may have screwed the proverbial pooch this time.

No need to go to the death penalty if hefty damages will do the job.

And the good thing about hefty damages is that the higher-ups might not really be affected by a dead beat cop or two, while a multi-million dollar judgment against the police chief, the county, and the county administrator and commissioners might just get their attention. (OK, I admit it, I'm pretty cynical!)

Somebody on the local news website mentioned that the mayor has hired a really aggressive plaintiffs' attorney. I generally don't hold a brief for the plaintiffs' bar, but this sounds like a situation in which a bulldog type guy is necessary and overall a Good Thing.

I hope the whole county gets taken to the cleaners, and that the resulting tax burden causes the taxpayers to clean house in county government. It's probable that this sort of rot goes all the way to the top.

it’s getting so that the police are just another gang

albeit, a city-paid legal gang.

yep, apparently with the same intelligence level of your average ghetto thug too.

There have been an awful lot of stories of cops shooting pets. Cops are working hard to be hated by law abiding citizens. Frickin' morons.
