"Good on you"! And I sincerely mean that!
My point is, if large numbers of other people also did so, society would police its own mores.
It's the old "nobody wants to get involved" scenario.
Criminalizing rude behavior is "easier" because citizens can cede their responsibilities to the police and government,
Indecency laws have been on the books for decades. I think it would do more harm than good to remove them.
This was a huge overreaction on his part, he should have accepted the apology and went on. Instead he escalated the situation and then she really started cussing, which caused shoppers (and their children) that otherwise did not hear her comment to be subjected to her screaming cuss words. He was demanding she go out to his car, which, given that he was clearly not a cop, I would have resisted as well. I won't stop for unmarked cop cars either, it is a safety issue and as for Walmart being safe:
Wal-Mart worker found dead after abduction - Jan 2005
Police: Phony Cop Tries To Handcuff Woman At Wal-Mart - April 2007
Man charged with assaulting girl in Wal-Mart (told her he was a cop) - October 2007
Attempted Wal-Mart Kidnapping Caught On Tape - March 2008
Man Sought For Abduction, Rape Of Woman Outside Wal-Mart - April 2008
Woman Claims Abduction Attempt At Wal-Mart - June 2008
Man arrested for impersonating cop (at Walmart) - July 2008
The only cuss word I absolutely won't tolerate in my presence is someone taking the Lord's name in vain. However, if they use other curse words, I ask them politely not to curse in my presence, I don't force my standards on them, I have the choice to walk away and not speak to them. There is nothing in the Constitution that says you have the right not to be offended by others.
Although the woman's speech was profane and, to many, offensive, it probably wasn't illegal. However, there are certain words that are not protected by the First Amendment in particular situations - from the famous prohibition against falsely shouting “fire” in a crowded theater to the use of so-called “fighting words,” in an abusive manner directed at a specific individual, that would be commonly expected to provoke an immediate breach of the peace.
But, you said in post #3”I’m so tired of hearing the “F” word that I don’t care who gave her the ticket.” So, you must be in favor of criminalizing words!
As I said to someone else, indecency laws have been on the books for decades.
"i was in uniform so i had to act."
BS! too much smoke in this guys brain it seems.
but i do think this woman cursed more and louder than she says.
It's also largely what I think Franklin feared when he uttered his famous words, "A Republic, if you can keep it."
"Indecency laws have been on the books for decades. I think it would do more harm than good to remove them."
Why not strengthen them? Certainly there are large pockets of people in the country who would be more than happy to declare conservative and religious speech offensive and vulgar. How will you feel when those folks are ticketed?
And who determines what is indecent? If an athiest proffesses there is no God in public, do you label him a heretic, throw him in the gulag to be tried later and then dunked to see if he drowns? Either you respect free speach or you don’t, or, is it only for words that YOU approve of.
You’re referring to hate speech laws and not indecency laws. Removing indecency laws would signal an “anything goes” mindset. I’d just leave them in place enforcing them only in egregious situations.
I was almost arrested in a Texas DPS office for saying the “f” word. This happened about two months ago. The crabby old lady at the counter even summoned a State Trooper to arrest me. He came out with his hand on his gun.
If I didn’t have a wife and little boy depending on me, I would have taken that State Trooper’s gun from him and shoved it up his ass. That’s how angry I was. (I was easily twice his size and ten years younger than him. Kicking his ass would have been an enjoyable diversion.) As it was, I had no choice but to get on my knees and enjoy the taste of his authority. State of Texas 1, B-chan 0.
I’ll be honest: I have very little use for law enforcement officers. If the police departments of America all closed down tomorrow there would be little difference on the streets in terms of crime, and a great increase in liberty. A good cop is as close to a superhero as anyone can be in the real world, but there are so few that their existence hardly matters.

Btw, I neither wrote nor passed the indecency laws and you do get carried away, don't you. Very dramatic.
But I have to go.
Arson investigator.
Have a nice day. And be careful of the posters who like crude language. It's freedom of speech, doncha' know. ;)
You are the one that got carried away when you stated you didn’t care who gave the woman a ticket. You can crawfish all you want but you made that statement. The next time you read a posters comment that include the letters WTF maybe you should hit the abuse button.
impressive biceps
I wouldn’t mess with her........
Post 48:do you label him a heretic, throw him in the gulag to be tried later and then dunked to see if he drowns?
Oh the melodrama!
And now I bid you Adieu.
I was watching this on the Texas channel last night. It was late but I didn’t hear her report what happened like that. According to her , he asked her not to talk like that and she said she looked at his badge and told her mother he wasn’t a cop and continued cursing and the police was called.
Bad manners maybe, BUT:
Amendment 1:
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
