Foul-talking shopper stirs up a tempest at store in La Marque
Houston Chronicle ^ | Sug. 14, 2008 | PEGGY O'HARE

If all storms had a name, this one would start with the letter F.

As Tropical Storm Edouard closed in on the Texas Gulf Coast last week, a storm of a different kind was brewing inside the sporting goods section of a Wal-Mart store in La Marque. It started with the F-word.

And now a 28-year-old single mother must go to court if she wants to fight a ticket for using profanity.

The events as recounted are a clear abuse of authority. This guy was not intervening in response to a loud tirade that rose to the level of creating a public nuisance; he was creating and escalating a situtation in response to a single offhand comment.

She was arrested for disturbing the peace (or something like that) You have a right to talk as vulgar as you want. I have the right to ask you not to talk like that around my kids though. Some day I may get my butt kicked but that hasn’t stopped me so far.

You two are why I will never vote for a libertarian candidate. This has nothing to do with rights, it has everything to do with enforcing civility in public. You do not have the right to be a rude, crude foul mouth in public. I say HooRay for the fire fighter. He did the right thing.

That always made me grind my teeth, because “fire truck” is clearly and self-evidently NOT one word.

Again, I ask you who determines rude, crude or profanity? When cops arrest people for felony assault”not this intance” for spitting in the vicinity of LE, we have a problem. If you do not want to be offended by certain speach, don’t frequent those places or leave when you are offended. The F word, N word, speach against queers or for them and other words some seem to be offended by are just that, words. I asume by your post you are in favor of laws against people expressing their opinion about Islam, christanity, jews, nudity, conservatives or liberals.

No. If you want to spew filth out of your mouth, you leave.

I will ask you the same question, who determines what is filth and what isn’t. Ever heard the saying one mans junk could be another mans treasure?

That has already been determined - hence the law which was enforced in this case.

"You’re referring to hate speech laws and not indecency laws. Removing indecency laws would signal an “anything goes” mindset. I’d just leave them in place enforcing them only in egregious situations."

Both hate speech and indecency laws are very arbitrary, capricious and subjective. Your proposed method of enforcement makes them even moreso.

Again, it comes down to a question of what sort of society people want to live in. When we tolerate trash on TV, etc. rather than tuning it out and thereby getting it off the air, we’ll get trash in our communities.

There are some of us who don’t want trash in our communities. We need to continue pointing out the trash and cleaning it up where we can. Those who like trash can collect it and wallow in it to their hearts’ content in the privacy of their homes, but not in the public streets.

>>Private conversations are held in private, not WalMart.<<

Indeed.

I will also say a cell phone does not provide one with a “cone of silence.”

Psst. . .to those that use a cell phone in public. . . yes, WE CAN HEAR YOU NOW. . .and we are not impressed with your social life, or the fact you a negotiating some big deal.

Apology for the rant. I'll go away now. . . .

Private conversations are held in private, not WalMart.

Really? So you cannot expect any privacy in a conversation outside of your home or vehicle? Boy, government will LOVE having subjects like you in the future.

By the way, when I walk 3 inches behind you and repeat everything you say on your next shopping trip, I'm sure you won't mind. Oh, and I'm sure that you'll accept me listening in on your cell phone calls, too.

What is with Houston and its statist atittudes? Anyone else remember the sheriff who a few yrs back went on an arresting spree while looking for some drag racers? Sheesh one would think Houston is crime free since they’re able to go after such silliness.
