Dems fear Invesco effect(Obama temple)
politico ^

Senior Democratic officials are expressing serious concerns about the political risks posed by Barack Obama’s acceptance speech at Invesco Field at Mile High Stadium Thursday evening.

From the elaborate stagecraft to the teeming crowd of 80,000 cheering partisans, the vagaries of the weather to the unpredictable audience reaction, the optics surrounding the stadium event have heightened worries that the Obama campaign is engaging in a high-risk endeavor in an uncontrollable environment.

A common concern: that the stadium appearance plays against Obama’s convention goal of lowering his star wattage and connecting with average Americans and that it gives Republicans a chance to drive home their message that the Democratic nominee is a narcissistic celebrity candidate.

“We already know he is a rock star, we already know he can bring 85,000 people together in a stadium. He has done it multiple times. He needs to talk to people who haven’t made up their minds yet,” said Tennessee Gov. Phil Bredesen.

“It’s likely that the campaign would do it differently if it had to do it again because the decision was made before the European trip,” said a senior Democratic elected officeholder who has worked closely with the Obama campaign. The GOP narrative of Obama as celebrity took root during that trip, where the Illinois senator played to large crowds of adoring Europeans.

Obama campaign officials acknowledged the apprehension Wednesday.

“I have heard some of the concerns and criticism that it’s such a big venue,” said a senior Obama campaign aide. “It’s no surprise that people could be a little nervous. We’re trying to do something new.”

“Greek Temple”

As I said in a post above,

Remember Captain Kirk meeting Apollo?

“Simple humanoid, Captain.”

“Evidently not simple enough ...”

“What do you want?”

“I want you to worship me!”

If I were a Dem adviser, I would really wince at all this.

Presidential candidates should be statesmanlike, not Janet Jackson-like.

Turning a national party's national convention into an MTV sideshow will turn off serious voters.

And, it's a "negative" that cannot be erased with a dozen "positives". This means that Marxist Obama can't suddenly act statesmanlike, and expect folks to forget the sideshow act.

I suspect that this will serve to illustrate Marxist Obama's poor judgment and questionable advisers to potential Blue Dog Dem voters than could a hundred internet articles.

“Turning a national party’s national convention into an MTV sideshow will turn off serious voters.”

For the past two or three conventions, the stages and podiums have gotten much bigger and more colorful. But I feel sure the Greek temple thing is taking things too far by a good margin.

This jerk thinks he’s bigger than rap stars.....

The rapper he evokes is Jay-Z who got up at this years Glastonbury Festival and introduced himself by saying — “I’m Jay-Z and I’m pretty f****** awesome”

This is who Obama is emulating

"Boston, we have a problem."

Best riposte from Rush: "I don't eat doughnuts. I eat Boston cream puffs and I spit them out."

“This is going to be the 2008 version of “The Wellstone Memorial”.”

I wouldn’t count on it. He’s a terrific speaker. It’s an entirely scripted, teleprompted, non-spontaneous event. It’s where he does best. I suspect he will give a great speech.
I disagree. What made the Wellstone Memorial such a huge disaster is the absolute inappropriateness of the event under the circumstances. It wasn't the speakers so much as it was the audience's reaction, chanting like a Nazi youth rally "we will win, we will win!"

Likewise, there will be no controlling the 75,000+ crowd, who could easily turn into an out of control chanting mob. There is always a risk in large events like this of crime, and it would look very bad if the next day's headlines include fatalities at the event.

But above all, it is the inappropriateness of the set, with Obama finally, officially, undeniably jumping the shark. This is Obama's "Dukakis tank" moment.
It is a political phenomenon when a politician plays into a developing narrative that is crystalized in that moment.

Believe me, Obama standing in front of those Greek columns before a screaming statium of Obamanics will do it. McCain laid the ground work masterfully, and Obama has stepped into the trap. It is too late now for him to turn back. Does he even know what he's heading for? Will the Obama campaign modify the stage, tear down the columns and have Obama stand on a plain stage, or will he jump into a caricature head first?

It seems to me that his course is set.

"We’re trying to do something new.”

Something new? I thought they were trying to mimic JFK's acceptance speech at some outdoor forum.

It should be. I want it to be. I'm just not sure it will be.

McCain is doing about all he can, and Obambi seems to be trying to help him, but there could be enough people out there that hate George W. Bush so much that they are willing to elect an incompetent, inexperienced, socialist just so they can have their "change".

Fatherless boys grow up to seek adoration. Bill Clinton tonight surely looked like he was deeply enjoying that limelight, yes, that he craved and needed it.

But when Obama walked onto the stage tonight it made the former Prez and fellow fatherless man Clinton look like a shy boy.

Obama walked out there like he OWNED the crowd. He isn’t treated like a rock star; he believes he IS a rock star.

I found it a little sad. I am not sure, when the adulation is this undeserved (as opposed to George Washington, say, who had led his troops bravely into deadly battle and won), if it’s good for leadership of a country.

Not a chance.
Believe me, it is always these moments where the politician is swinging for the bleachers when he is actually just jumping the shark.

Dukakis in the tank was supposed to be his hero shot that proved how tough he was. But he looked so out of place and ridiculous that it only solidified the view that he was weak on national defense.

There was already a building narrative that John Kerry’s whole campaign revolved around serving in Vietnam. And when he showed up “reporting for duty”, that crystallize it.

Now the building narrative is that Obama is an empty celebrity, riding a wave of hollow adulation and self-aggrandizement. And when he gives his speech, he is going to emerge from Greek pantheon columns before a sell-out arena crowd? His campaign is utterly insane. This will solidify McCain’s attack. He will not be taken seriously again. He will become the “American Idol” candidate.

No, you are imposing your will on the people. What’s new about that?

It’s going to be really sad for Obama after he loses and he no longer has the huge crowds cheering him on. He’ll be shunned and scorned for being a loser, just like all of the other big losers of his party: McGovern, Mondale, Kerry.

His rockstar ride is about to come to an end, and I think it is going to be very tough on the Obamas psychologically.
