Palin Pros & Cons
The Corner/National Review Online ^ | August 29, 2008 | Andy McCarthy

Posted on 08/29/2008 2:55:35 PM PDT by Delacon

"she has thrilled the GOP's conservative base, which can now in good conscience give itself to the McCain candidacy with enthusiasm—not feigned enthusiasm, real enthusiasm—for the first time since the senator entered the race. This has solved McCain's worst strategic problem."

This pick makes McCain a stronger candidate because it makes it more likely the people he needs — that would be us — are are going to rev it up.  Unless and until he does something drastic to undermine confidence, I (and I don't think I'm singular in this) am now over my two biggest worries: (a) that McCain will not listen to conservatives once he's elected, and (b) that he will not go to the mat on his commitment to appoint conservative judges (i.e., judges who would be likely to invalidate McCain's signature issue of campaign finance reform).  It also shows that he does care about the future of the party after McCain, which I doubted.  Today, I go from from an ambivalent McCain supporter driven more by fear of Obama to someone who can feel good about the prospects of a McCain administration.  If there are a few million more like me, maybe the all-important undercard of Senate and House races won't turn out as badly as some experts are predicting.

Those are powerful plusses.  I'm not worried about her inexperience because she impresses me as a quick study who will surround herself with knowledgeable people of a conservative foreign policy bent.  She does not come to us out of the Council on Foreign Relations; she comes as the conservative governor of the state next door to an aggressive Russia which is flying regular missions along Alaska's coastline — as Jay noted, she took pains to mention she is commander-in-chief of the Alaska National Guard.  She's the patriotic mother of a son who voluntarily enlisted and is soon to deploy to Iraq (you think there's anything she's not gonna know about Iraq under those circumstances?).

This is the best day we've had in a long time.

Congress’ approval ratings are dismal. Even before today, but especially now, this was not shaping up to be an anti-GOP year. It’s looking a lot like an anti-incumbent year.

People need to take this excitement and support conservative candidates across the board.

Social Conservatives: Palin did not abort her Downs Syndrome baby. BIG CHECK!

Reform Conservatives: She’s not from Washington, and opposes her corrupt Republican delegation from AK. BIG CHECK!

Good Government Conservatives: Has Executive Experience. CHECK.

Old White Women: Has the right plumbing, can vote for a woman rather than The Good Old Boys Who Stole the Nomination (read: Hillary supporters). BIG CHECK!

Guys: She’s a babe. She fishes. BIG CHECK!

McCain kept faith with us. Let's show him that loyalty is a two way street.

So many people on so many threads talking about donating to the campaign, or donating again.

I hope they release the one day haul.

I just made my contribution.

McCain did the right thing. This is his year and yes there are a few million more like the author.

McCain was born in the year of the rat (No, not the Rat Party. The good rats, the rodents.). This year is the rat year so it's his year.

You know, we conservatives have been looking for our next Reagan....in looking at the staunch conservative credentials of Palin, I think she could very well be the next one.

Interesting times.

Thank You Senator McCain!

I was not sure about McCain, probably vote for him but hold my nose. This today has really excited me for the election. My husband wasn’t going to vote at all, but now cannot wait. He thinks this was brillant. (personally I think it is because she is good looking) I even made a donation to McCain this afternoon! I pray Palin cleans Biden’s clock in a debate.

Its the only way to get real change. It has to start at the grassroots level with the House. You can’t elect 535 goofballs to Congress and expect some superman in the White House to clean it all up.

Kudos to Senator McCain for choosing Governor Palin.

That’s true. And conservatives have a decent shot to grab back some of the House seats taken by supposedly conservative Dems two years ago. As incumbents they won’t be any more vulnerable (usually) than they are as freshmen.

Once again no mention of the issue of Illegal Immigration.

And I don't think John McCain's signature issue is Campaign Finance Reform. It's Illegal Immigration or Amnesty.

This pick would never have been made had the 'unappeasables' listened to the feint of heart party hacks. McCain heard the rumbling and acted in his own interests.

Thats what politics are about. They are NOT about unquestioningly taking a bite of whatever sh*t sandwich the party offers.

I doubt there will be many, since after Saddleback (and even before), Obambi, who used to say "I'll debate McCain anywhere, anytime" has run and hid whenever the subject is brought up, so my guess is one debate and out. And it won't matter how well she does - the MSM is in the hole for Biden, the debate will probably be on MSLSD and we'll be told she lost.

It was a brilliant move, BUT I still won't vote for a rino like McCain. I know I'll be in the minority here, but as a conservative I can't support the current rinoization of the RNC/GOP. This is far more about setting a standard than just defeating Obama and if conservatives don't understand that, then they will remain a minority for years to come!

I will not support McCain for the Presidency. The RNC/GOP shunned me, as well as McCain, are headed in the wrong direction, have serious agenda flaws , and as far I'm concerned both can still go pound sand!

“Once again no mention of the issue of Illegal Immigration.”

Check out the articles on illegal immigration and McCain that I’ve posted. I’ve never spoke in favor of him on this issue. The issue of illegal immigration wont be won DURING the election but after. We need a landslide with the help of conservatives with conservative house and senate members getting elected who are inclined to stop the call for amnesty in any way shape or form. Immigration is off the map for now. Lets get McCain elected and then stop him from any pro-amnesty initiatives. Lets elect McCain for all the other reasons like judges and national security.
