New Orleans orders mandatory evacuation
Washington Post ^ | August 30, 2008 | BECKY BOHRER

NEW ORLEANS -- Spooked by predictions that Hurricane Gustav could grow into a Category 5 monster, an estimated 1 million people fled the Gulf Coast Saturday _ even before the official order came for New Orleans residents to get out of the way of a storm taking dead aim at Louisiana.

Mayor Ray Nagin gave the mandatory order late Saturday, but all day residents took to buses, trains, planes and cars _ clogging roadways leading away from New Orleans, still reeling three years after Hurricane Katrina flooded 80 percent of the city and killed about 1,600 across the region.

The evacuation of New Orleans becomes mandatory at 8 a.m. Sunday along the vulnerable west bank of the Mississippi River, and at noon on the east bank. Nagin called Gustav the storm of the century and told residents to "get your butts out of New Orleans now."

I hope they don’t refuge out of NOLA and come to Texas for their little rump ranger convention.

If I misinterpreted, then I apologize. I’m too far away to do anything to help my parents, who were just getting ready to put their house on the market to move back this way. I’m a tad touchy tonight.

man-da-tor-y?

That’s way too many syllables for NO.

“Get out!” might be more easily understood but after Katrina the only thing that would convince some is a tidal wave or a 2x4.

New Orleans should be razed to the ground. The opportunity should be taken to rebuilt anew not in the path of Nature's most devastating storms.

"Will they be using the buses this time?"

I have heard that (Conservative Republican LA Governor) Jindal commandeered over 700 of them when he ordered evacuations starting yesterday...

According to AP Nagain is running the show:

Mayor Ray Nagin gave the mandatory order late Saturday, but all day residents took to buses, trains, planes and cars — clogging roadways leading away from New Orleans, still reeling three years after Hurricane Katrina flooded 80 percent of the city and killed about 1,600 across the region.

I can’t even imagine the frustration and anguish you’re going through. God bless you, your family and everyone else who will be affected by that storm.

I hope Jindal has the NG keep watch over the levees. Maybe they could install some video cameras, just in case. And the Feds should try to keep an eye on Ayers and his gang. A well placed bomb would be blamed on the Republicans (again), and give Obama a boost.

You know, there are real live people living there, including my elderly parents (Thibodaux, La. — they’ve left) and numerous other relatives. Maybe you could mute your smug superiority for a while.

The opportunity should be taken to rebuilt anew not in the path of Nature's most devastating storms.

Well, it's kind of difficult to rebuild anew something under the management of corrupt, thieving politicians and their cronies.

Parasites like them can only survive on a healthy host, and for centuries New Orleans was healthy and thriving as a major port city and commercial hub.

Parasites can't build anything themselves, though, that requires productive, self-reliant, confident people without too many parasites sucking their blood while they build.

Katrina threatened to leave the parasites high and dry, with hardly anyone left in town to graft - they've had to resort to swindling the rest of the United States.

Actually, I’m in TN and during the Katrina disaster, we didn’t have much of any problem in our part of the state. A very toney town near us fixed up large shelters, or housed people in motels, Red Cross fed them at churches, (but most of them opted for fast food, comfort food instead most of the time with FEMA money or their own money), and the town and Nashville as well even had employers sending hiring staff to the shelters to find employees. A lot of New Orleanians had nothing to go back to, so they took jobs here and across the country. They took the chance to get out of N.O., getting their own apartments and glad for new opportunities. Some have stayed away from N.O. and started their own restaurants.

Thanks for your post. I cringe every time I read a post that says something similar to, “people in N.O. are stupid, or people in New York deserve it, blah blah.

The stereotyping is idiotic.

Yes, a lot of the Katrinas have stayed to live here in TX too. Personally I think they should just get everyone out of NO and let the da$$ levees go. We can rebuild the port and make the people move inland. No one should die for the levees.
