Palin Made an Impression From the Start (How McCain Came to Select Palin as VP)
Washington Post ^ | 8/31/2008 | Dan Balz and Robert Barnes

Their first encounter was last February at the National Governors Association meeting in Washington. Sarah Palin was one of several governors who met privately with Sen. John McCain, by then well on his way to capturing the Republican presidential nomination, and her directness and knowledge were impressive.

Later that day, at a largely social gathering organized by his campaign, McCain spent 15 minutes in private conversation with the first-term Alaska governor. "I remember him talking about her when he came back," a McCain adviser said. "He said she was an impressive woman. He liked her."

But few people outside McCain's inner circle were privy to just how much of an impression Palin had made that day.

In the months of speculation over whom McCain would pick as his vice presidential running mate, Palin's name occasionally surfaced but rarely as a serious choice. But by the time she arrived in Arizona last Wednesday to meet first with two top McCain advisers and then the next day with the candidate and his wife, Cindy, the job was hers to lose.

Fascinating account of how Sarah Palin became the choice for VP.

What is impressive, and what I think bodes well, is that she was selected not on the basis of any political triangulation, but because it seems that Senator McCain truly believed she was the best candidate for the job.

Yup!

I thought it was Hell-Funny how some were speculating that McCain would ask the Hildebeast to be his running mate. They described that as a “win-win”...

...of course, the only one who’d “win” out of that would be The Beast. Arkancide would have been on the menu for McCain.

Fortunately, McCain isn’t that gullible. Palin is an inspirational choice. I bet The Beast is fuming!

The comments to this article are mostly sickening. I think that fine upstanding rat candidate has an organized smear campaign out on Sara. I hope she and her family can take it - it’s nasty.

McCain’s got skills. You can’t underestimate this guy or Palin.

The dems don’t know what they are dealing with and making really stupid mistakes.

Yes, did you see her expression at the funeral? For the first time, she looked genuinely upset. But of course it is for herself. I thought it was interesting to see Hildabeast let her hair down and finally show some real emotions, though I know it wasn’t for her friend. It might sound mean for me to say that, but it’s true.

This was an interesting read. Also, it shows she was at the top of his list for awhile, not some “desperate” move like some in the media have said.

McCain knows about task saturation and channelized attention.

and brilliant stealth. If this was leaked out even a few days too early, Palin pick would be old news and obama probably would not have picked Biden. By keeping it a secret even from intrade until right after obama’s big speech, he managed to completely wipe out coverage and reinforcement of that sensation. Obama is now stuck with a dud for VP and no convention bounce.

“Obama is now stuck with a dud for VP and no convention bounce.”

That made me laugh out loud, and I’m not being facetious.

Is this a great time or what?

McCain and his people can keep secrets; Palin and hers can do the same; the libs are bat-crap crazy and gibbering with fear over this; and Cindy McCain is John’s trusted partner and confidant, even though she refuses to call attention herself.

Could it be that McCain will be a great president after all?

I heard it reported that RINO goofball lindsey grahamnesty wanted McCain to pick wimp, liberal loser (already been on a LOSING DEM ticket) Lieberman.

Besides the fact he's a liberal on MOST issues, that "Garfield" voice of his would have been sickening to hear, as biden shredded him at any debate.

Now, biden will BE shredded by OUR very own "Margaret Thatcher".

Thanks for NOTHING grahamnesty (hope that little puke dosn't get any post of consequence in a McCain admin).

I heard an info babe ask a McCain aide how they kept it a secret for so long and the aide said by putting out false leads and leading the media on wild goose chases. I thought the info babe was going to have a stroke. LOL

As a interested foreigner i say this is wonderful and really interesting pick for the upcoming campaign.

This pick is so risky it can go from a total disaster and nightmare to a absolutely brilliant idea.

Perhaps it costs Mc cain the best argument he had and let people focus even more on his age and health condition as the oldest president ever to enter the white house because of this VP pic but perhaps this pic brings not only the conservative vote and base on board but also some Clinton fans and especially women perhaps just enough to win crucial states.

Everything is possible and it is up to Sarah Palin to deliver or not. We will know in some weeks.

What a strange pick at a time where Mc cain was Tie in the polls. This pick looks more like we need a bang to turn things around.

this looks more like a strategy General Petraeus would come up with...not a bunch of political science geeks in some basement.

You are absolutely correct. I took me a little while to understand this, but I am fully on board now.
