Russia threatens to supply Iran with top new missile system as 'cold war' escalates

Russia is deploying the threat to sell a "game changing" air defence system to Iran as a high stakes bargaining chip in its new "cold war" with America, The Sunday Telegraph has learned.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev [right] speaks with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad during their bilateral meeting in Dushanbe on August 28, 2008 Photo: AFP/GETTY US intelligence fears the Kremlin will supply the sophisticated S-300 system to Tehran if Washington pushes through Nato membership for its pro-Western neighbours Georgia and Ukraine.

The proposed deal is causing huge alarm in the US and Israel as the S-300 can track 100 targets at once and fire on planes up to 75 miles away.

That would make it a "game-changer", greatly improving Iranian defences against any air strike on its nuclear sites, according to Pentagon adviser Dan Goure. "This is a system that scares every Western air force," he said.

Senior US intelligence operatives believe that Russia is planning to use a stand-off over the S-300 to create a foreign policy showdown that would test the mettle of a new US president.

Republican candidate John McCain has taken a strongly anti-Kremlin line on a series of international issues and backed Georgia's desire to join Nato. His Democratic rival Barack Obama has also indicated he supports Nato membership for Georgia.

Ah, the S-300. The same ones that didn’t work at all (with Russian operators) in Syria against Israeli and second-line US gear.

Maybe they’re new and improved.

Probably not much of a defense against low-flying cruise missiles launced from subs and warships close by.

Lets not forget the silent partners in Beijing Who are also supplying weapons to our enemies in Iran.

I guess Ahmadinejad’s days are well-and-truly numbered now. He’d have to be checking under his bed at nite for Mossad assassins before he goes to sleep.

It time to stop playing games with Putin and his terrorist proxies and directly confront the whole lot of them, but as a united front.

I like those words...

“that would test the mettle of a new US president.”

I am SURE Obama has the EXPERIENCE to handle a fresh opportunity like this. I am sure the empty suit can DIPLOMATICALL NEGOTIATE Americas best interests. Obama should have been around to take care of it after Peanutman.

Per the specs, it’s not much good against low flying anything, or high flyers, either. Apparently, it can’t see or track anything below 500’, and it can’t hit anything much above 32,000’.

I think you are thinking of the SA-3 Goa. See list of SAM names.

The 9th Century knuckledraggers in Tehran (and Moscow) may not realize it but Putin's threat to do this greatly increases the chances that Israel will strike Iran....strike her **hard**...and strike her **soon**.

Our allies in Europe will be on board no doubt.

Unfortunately it's not that easy.Imanutjob can be replaced by the 9th Century knuckledragging mullahs in Tehran in a heartbeat. And it must be noted that he's just a puppet anyway. It's the clowns with the beards and black dresses that have to be dealt with.

That is an act of war. Tell Russia they will share in the consequences, period.

They think they can play these games and they are in fact doing it RIGHT IN FRONT OF OUR FACES. Like I say, we need to firmly tell Russia that they will be nuked/bombed when Iran uses the tech they gave them. No doubt about it.

Chances are that Israel will finish them off even before the new president would swear in.

And damned little use against B-2's and F-22's working at night.

Too bad they retired the F-117, just when they could probably use a few more spooky airplanes capable of dragging 500-pound JDAM's to the demolition site.
