Obama: Lipstick on a Pig (Did he just call Sarah Palin a pig and a stinky fish?)
Politico ^ | Tuesday, September 9, 2008 | Ben Smith

Posted on 09/09/2008 3:36:33 PM PDT by kristinn

Amie Parnes reports from Lebanon, VA:

Obama poked fun of McCain and Palin's new "change" mantra.

"You can put lipstick on a pig," he said as the crowd cheered. "It's still a pig."

"You can wrap an old fish in a piece of paper called change. It's still gonna stink."

"We've had enough of the same old thing."

The crowd apparently took the "lipstick" line as a reference to Palin, who described the difference between a hockey mom and a pit bull in a single word: "lipstick."

Publicize them far and wide.

At the top of Drudge, they already are. Did you look at his hits just in the past 24 hours? Tomorrow this will be the 'bomb'.

freedom of speech and all

Sure, freedom of speech for obama. But when he calls Palin a pig, he will need to accept the consequences.

Colmes is way out of touch.

Colmes and Wolfson were just going on and on and on.

So Hannity jumped in and said one thing. Alan made it look like Hannity interrupted thier entire conversation.

Alan started naming off and trying to defend journalists.

“You think Mike Barnicle’s a liberal? What!”

“You think Tucker Carlson’s a liberal? What!”

“You think Alex Costello’s a liberal? What!”

Hannity was like yes, yes yes!!

This has nothing to do with freedom of speech. Read the Constitution for a proper definition.

and yet Hussein think it's ok to lower the ugly POLITICS OF PERSONAL DESTRUCTION to a new low!!!

Shameless. Absolutely shameless.

But is it politically smart to use the female genital insult of "stinky fish"?

Obama is saying Palin is "unclean" because she is a woman?!

where else do we hear that thought process?
what religion is obsessed with the "stinky fish" religious belief of women...

hmmm....

He’s too sly by half.

The “veiled reference” is obvious to everyone.

I’m having trouble thinking of an analog for what follows for him. It’s bigger than the bunny suit and the tank ride. It’s half a dozen algore lies rolled into one ginormous raspberry Blunt.

As someone else pointed out: The whole country knows that “lipstick” joke she told and that’s why that crowd reacted the way they did.

Funny you should say this :) My wife is out of town at a conference. I knew she hadn't heard about Obama's latest faux pas so I AIM'd her a little while ago. Nothing else was said about lipstick or Obama before this part. This was our conversation:

Me(8:23:30 PM): Have you heard of Obama's latest "gaffe"?
Her(8:23:53 PM): no what did he do this time
Me(8:24:05 PM): watch it and you tell me. Not long - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FPd4yk0x-eg
Me(8:24:09 PM): from today
Her(8:25:47 PM): what a douche bag. so now he is calling palin a pig!!!!
Me(8:26:03 PM): Well, the audience certainly thought so
============

I think it's pretty evident what people will think of this at face value :-)

From NRO’s The Corner

Was McCain the stinky old fish? [Victor Davis Hanson]

In all the furor over the Obama “pig” quote, commentators forgot to examine his entire attack:

“You can put lipstick on a pig. “It’s still a pig.”

“You can wrap an old fish in a piece of paper called change. It’s still gonna stink.”

When read in the entire context you can see what he seems to mean with his dual animate male/female references and why he probably evoked two metaphors: most would think that Obama is talking about both on the ticket and his anger how each has expropriated his change motif.

So in that sense he appears both to insult the 72-year old McCain as the “old fish” that is still going to “stink”, and to refer to Palin, who had famously evoked the metaphor of lipstick in a nationally televised address, as still the pig despite the lipstick.

The fact that he used two metaphors to attack the two, and used expressions referring both to age and Palin’s recent use of “lipstick” don’t seem to be accidents and that’s why the cooing crowd got the old fish=McCain;lipsticked pig=Palin immediately.

I’ll leave it to others to deconstruct the historical use of pig as a sexist term in the recent climate of generic attacks on Sarah Palin.

PS. The VP nominee was just announced and already Biden has called her “good looking” and now “a step back for women”; most know what he intended, but like most Bidenisms they come out wrongly and confirm a popular perception that he suffers from logorhhea and that there is a different standard of reference applied to Palin due to her sex.

Someone in the campaign has got to manage the ex tempore carelessness.

John McCain learned how to deal with evil during his time at the Hanoi Hilton. Keep your mouth shut, and let the good times roll. The evil will self-destruct. Obama is demonstrating that on a daily basis. Today is just too delicious. Let him think he’s on a roll, this will only get better!

Indeed - done right, this can be the famous "mushroom cloud" ad for McCain and Palin. 10 seconds of Palin addressing a huge, cheering crowd, including her "lipstick on a hockey mom" comment. Fade to Obambi making his "lipstick on a pig" comment. Then fade to "Change we can believe in?"

Good point about showing a brief clip to show the original context. When Palin made the joke she was simply saying to the media and doomsayers, "We Hockey Moms are tough!" She didn't imply anything about the Obama campaign directly - simply that she was not going to cower but was a fighter.

But why did the Senator “Cokehead” do it ? This was planned and contrived, what was the gain ?

My take is that they saw America go wild over Palin's sharp wit and figured, hey, we want some of that. So Obama and his team tried to copy her, having absolutely no understanding of the art and science of good humor. The anger and mean-spiritedness will always come through, and it's poison. Americans can smell it a mile away and reject it. [Air America, anyone?].

Plus, you can't manufacture likeability. You can't script authenticity. It's like John Kerry putting on a flannel shirt and ear flaps and pretending to be a hunter. Dukakis in a tank. The funny thing is, Obama's their nominee because Hillary's even less likeable. And now, along comes someone who's a lot more likeable than Obama. And there's not a damn thing he can do about it. Every time he tries--like this lipstick fiasco--he makes things that much worse.

Liberals are entirely clueless as to why America loves Palin.

You’re right. Whatever you think of McCain as a candidate, he’s run a masterful campaign the last couple of months. They won’t get in the gutter with this snake. I expect a couple of high-minded remarks from McCain-Palin tomorrow with a thinly veiled rebuke that will leave Obama looking very childish and stupid. By the way, I guarantee Obama freelanced that comment. There is no way his campaign wanted to change the focus from all their wannabe character/fraud/etc. slanders on Palin. The idiot Messiah just guaranteed that all anyone is going to hear the next few days is whether or not he called her a ‘pig’. Plus, there’s an opening to bring back ‘the finger’ he flipped Hillary and whether he meant that or not. Stupid, stupid move. He loses either way.

What attacks on his character? Certainly not by Colmes and the rest of the Democrat flunkies in the media. It’s open season on Palin, however.

Anyway, I’ll be glad to question Obama’s character. I think he’s a stealth Marxist who doesn’t want to give away his true beliefs and goals. I believe he’s devious.

Here’s the text-—

Obama Says McCain Is Offering Fake Change: ‘You Can Put Lipstick on a Pig, But It’s Still a Pig’
September 09, 2008 6:10 PM

LEBANON, Va. — “That’s not change,” Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., said of what Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., is offering.

“You know, you can put lipstick on a pig,” Obama said, “but it’s still a pig.”

The crowd rose and applauded, some of them no doubt thinking he may have been alluding to Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin’s ad lib during her vice presidential nomination acceptance speech last week, “What’s the difference between a hockey mom and a pit bull? Lipstick.”

“You can wrap an old fish in a piece of paper called ‘change,’” Obama continued, “it’s still gonna stink after eight years.

“We’ve had enough of the same old thing! It’s time to bring about real change to Washington. And that’s the choice you’ve got in this election.”

Obama added that “it is not going to be easy ... John McCain has a compelling biography, you know Sarah Palin is an interesting story.”

The crowd booed.

“No, she’s new!” Obama said. “She hasn’t been on the scene, you know, she’s got five kids and my hat goes off to anybody who’s looking after five. I’ve got two and they tire Michelle and me out!”
