TOKYO, Sept 11 (Reuters) - An earthquake that struck off the coast of Japan's northernmost main island of Hokkaido on Thursday had a preliminary magnitude of 7, the meteorological agency said on Thursday.

CERN isn’t set up to “split atoms”.
More the reverse.
Today they warmed up by testing firing a proton beam around the collider in one direction.
They, they test-fired a proton beam the other direction.
The plan (to happen in a month or two): collide two proton beams head-first, directly into each other. Impacting the most dense particle we know of traveling at light speed, directly into another just like it traveling at light speed. Head on.
The resulting compression of matter, just might create a genuine black hole.
After which, it will be hungry.

I don’t think you’re following the conversation. I didn’t say the LHC splits atoms.
In the early 80's, there was worry about the biotech industry unleashing havoc on the world. In reality, the nearly infinite number of living bacteria in the world are already doing massive experiments with random mutations which is in far excess of anything humans would create. And if there were a danger, it would be better to have it in a test tube first than to find it in the wild. It is better in the lab, because you know more about it and what to do about it.
The solar system is already doing the same experiment with proton proton collisions at nearly the speed of light that the collider is doing. If there is to be a mini black hole, I'd rather find it in the lab, instead of in the solar system because we might find out enough to deal with it in the lab.

When we merely split one atom, we got a nuclear explosion, that leveled 2 cities.You didn’t “level 2 cities” by splitting one atom. If you split one Uranium-235 atom, all you’ll get is about 3.2 × 10-11 J. This means you would need to split 156,250,000,000 atoms to get enough energy to power an average 5W flashlight for one second. The point of an atom bomb is that splitting one atom sets of a chain reaction that will split an incredibly high number of other atoms, and that will level a city. In the LHC, no such chain reaction is going to happen, so…relax!

We did not "split one atom". We split something on the order of a septillion (10 raised to the 24th) power of them, more or less, of them. But that is of little import.
We've been smashing particles into each other for several generations now. The only difference is now we'll be smashing heavier particles and they will be going faster (although due to relativistic effects not much faster percentage while, but with way more energy). Still one collision is no big bang, but it's the stuff that flies out of the collision that is of interest and can lead to new understandings of physics.
Someone once said it's like trying to learn about semiconductor electronics (transistors and integrated circuits) by smashing Buicks together and watch what comes flying out of the collision. :) But it's what has worked in the past.
The biggest "expected" outcome involves the discovery/confirmation of existence of something called the Higgs Boson. That in turn has, we think, something do with how things get their mass and thus also with gravity. All sorts of interesting, and beneficial, things could come from that.
I knew I asked the right people! FR always has intelligent people who thoughtfully explain issues to people like me, wanting to understand.
