Maureen Dowd: My Fair Veep
The International Herald-Tribune ^ | September 10, 2008 | Maureen Dowd

WASILLA, Alaska: The rain in Spain falls mainly on the Arctic plain ...

I hope John McCain doesn't throw his slippers at Sarah Palin's head or get as acerbic as Henry Higgins did with Eliza Doolittle when she did not learn quickly enough. McCain's Pygmalion has to be careful, because his Galatea might be armed with more than a sharp tongue.

For the first time in American history, we have a "My Fair Lady" moment, as teams of experts bustle around the most famous woman in politics, intensely coaching her for her big moment at the ball - her first unscripted interview this week here with ABC's Charlie Gibson.

Eliza, by George, got it and brought off the coup of passing herself off as a Hungarian princess rather than a Covent Garden flower seller. Sarah's challenge is far tougher, and that's why she's pulling the political equivalent of an all-nighter. She doesn't have to pass herself off as a different class or change her voice or be more highfalutin. The McCain campaign is reveling in its anti-intellectual tenor.

Sarah, who is now so renowned that she is known merely by one name and has a name ID of 90 percent, has to be a Kmart mom who appeals to Kmart moms and dads. She's already shown that she can shoot the pig, bring home the bacon and fry it up in a pan. Now all she has to do is prove that she can be the leader of the free world on a moment's notice, and field dress Vladimir Putin as adeptly as she can a moose.

The eyelets maybe be for hanging things like a whistle, bear spray, or a small sheathed knife.

The gloves look thick, and wonderfully warm.

Questions MoDo is suggesting for Charlie Gibson:

When the phone rings at 3 a.m., will she call the Wasilla Assembly of God congregation and ask them to pray on a response, as she asked them to pray for a natural gas pipeline?

Does she talk in tongues or just eat caribou tongues?

Pretty catty.

Did you notice how Modo has to use a literary allusion to every book she has ever read? I guess she’s trying to show off that first class edumacation.

I love how all of these super snotty libs like to castigate conservatives as being stupid, etc..

If that is true, what does it say about the libs if the village idiot keeps beating them in election after election?

I must have seen a dozen columns with 10 Questions for Sarah Palin within the last two days. Invariably, these are questions Palin has already answered or are readily determined from even a cursory glance at her record.

What annoys these columnists is that they know the answers, but they are not the answers they want. They want Sarah Palin to admit that she is a book burner who believes that dinosaurs roamed the earth until the week before last, and that she wants to outlaw sex education and teach creationism in schools. They know all these things are true about Sarah Palin, and are sorely PO’ed that she will not admit them!

Isn’t it odd, both Palin and CZJ are super hot brunettes? MoDO seems to have it in for both of them

oh, every inch of that outfit is designer. the grommets are most likely cosmetic and taken as an accent from a real warm-weather coat where it had function.

designers usually take pieces that have an actual function and mirror them in non-functional ways. it looks better, but the function is gone.

of course, i live in NYC but know little of fashion.

It really sucks to be a New York has been who no longer matters. From the backwoods of Alaska comes a breeze that wafts away all that is seen as worth while. All that sophistication...... Gone With The Wind.

Every time I read a Dowd column, I’m reminded of Dogbert’s famous line:

“I admire your ability to get paid for this.”

Maureen Dowd and her ilk expose their hollow heads and ignorance of America's history when they mock Palin for her faith or prayers.

Dowd might visit here to hear and read the Dem's FDR, as he led Americans in prayer on that historic day in 1944.

Then, if she wished to expand the boundaries of her provincial thinking a bit further, perhaps these words might help:

"In this situation of this Assembly, groping as it were in the dark to find political truth, and scarce able to distinguish it when presented to us, how has it happened, Sir, that we have not hitherto once thought of humbly applying to the Father of lights to illuminate our understandings? In the beginning of the Contest with G. Britain, when we were sensible of danger we had daily prayer in this room for the divine protection.- Our prayers, Sir, were heard, & they were graciously answered. All of us who were engaged in the struggle must have observed frequent instances of a superintending providence in our favor. To that kind providence we owe this happy opportunity of consulting in peace on the means of establishing our future national felicity. And have we now forgotten that powerful friend? or do we imagine that we no longer need his assistance? I have lived, Sir, a long time, and the longer I live, the more convincing proofs I see of this truth- that God Governs in the affairs of men. And if a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without his notice, is it probable that an empire can rise without his aid? We have been assured, Sir, in the sacred writings, that “except the Lord build the House they labour in vain that build it.” I firmly believe this; and I also believe that without his concurring aid we shall succeed in this political building no better, than the Builders of Babel: We shall be divided by our little partial local interests; our projects will be confounded, and we ourselves shall become a reproach and bye word down to future ages. And what is worse, mankind may hereafter from this unfortunate instance, despair of establishing Governments by Human wisdom and leave it to chance, war and conquest." -----------Benjamin Franklin, at the Constitutional Convention, 1787

And, then, from that favorite of the Far Left and their minions (when they quote his "separation of church and state" phrase), Thomas Jefferson:

"I shall need the favor of the Being in whose hands we are, Who led our forefathers . . . from their native land, and planted them in a country flowing with all the necessaries and comforts of life; Who has covered our infancy with His providence, and our riper years with His wisdom and power . . . I ask you to join with me in supplication, that He will so enlighten the minds of your servants, guide their councils, and prosper their measure, that whatsoever they do shall result in your good, and shall secure to you peace, friendship, and approbation of all nations." ---Thomas Jefferson, Second Inaugural as President of the United States of America
