Gibson-Palin: Ratings Hot Despite His Chilly Start
Washington Post ^ | Saturday, September 13, 2008 | Tom Shales

For ABC anchor Charlie Gibson, it was almost a no-win situation, yet he came out of it not losing. Gibson's interviews with Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin -- who had been carefully sheltered from the media previously -- would have been criticized if he'd seemed too gentle, and yet attacked from other quarters if he'd seemed too tough. So he tried to be both and neither -- a very iffy trick.

Usually likable and personable on-screen, Gibson seemed uncharacteristically pompous during part of the first interview, excerpts from which aired on "ABC World News" on Thursday. But in subsequent sessions with Palin, he was his old chummy self.

Regardless of how one feels about Gibson's technique, he definitely scored a hit in the ratings. "NBC Nightly News" with Brian Williams usually wins the three-network evening news race, but Thursday, ABC's newscast beat NBC's by more than 2 million viewers (9.73 million to 7.5 million, with CBS trailing at 6.1 million), according to quickie Nielsen numbers.

People love Sarah, or at least are curious about her.

It looks like a lot of Americans saw Gov. Palin. Excellent! I don’t worry about her anymore. I think any exposure she gets will only cause more voters to like what they see.

P.S. Gibson, you suck.

I could think of a few more choice words for Gibson. Wouldn't it be funny if he asked Obama the same sort of questions with the same sort of mannerisms? That would be a hoot. We may even get to understand somethings about Chicago thug politics and politicians.

No Palin’s rating were red hot. Gibson managed to blow a golden opportunity by being pompous preening media stodge who thought HE was the message not just the medium.

The ratings for this had NOTHING at all to do with Gibson. Leave it to the Establishment Media to confuse themselves for the message yet again!

That was quite the scow Charlie had for the bulk of the interview. I found his peering over his granny-glasses as if to look down upon Gov. Palin to be an attempt at dominating. I might only suggest that the Gov’s handlers put her on some kind of riser to put her on more equal sightlines when being interviewed by men.

The ratings were for Palin, not Gibson.

LOL! I only read the first 3 paragraphs posted and they're all about Gison, nothing about Sarah...Which says more about Sarah than it does WAPO or Gibson.
Regardless of how one feels about Gibson's technique, he definitely scored a hit in the ratings.
Right, everyone tuned in to see Gibson...what pathetic frauds.

No Charlie, YOU didn’t score a hit in ratings. Sarah Palin scored your ratings hit for you, no thanks to your snide and superior attitude, not to mention your NON-Researched question on “The Bush Doctrine.”

The one question no one will ask Barack Obama:

“In the 1970s, William Ayers organized bombings of the U.S. Capitol Building, the Pentagon, and the Harry S. Truman building. He and his followers were responsible for the murders of two police officers. He has admitted all of this, and in 2001 he said he wished he had done more bombings. Your campaign called him “respectable” and “mainstream.” Do you believe people who set bombs and kill police officers are respectable and mainstream?”

HAHAHAHAHA!!! Poor little twink. Dya think the narcissistic media sees itself as the center of attention in this cross-examination? Narcissists self-destruct if they press their grandiosity hard enough on others.

Isn’t this what it’s all about? How Charlie Gibson did? It’s got to be the highlight of his career that he survived interviewing Gov. Palin.

For journalists everywhere, this has got to be right behind Murrow’s “Have you no shame?” and Geraldo busting into Capone’s vault.

Well done, indeed.

His mischaracterization of her “mission from God” quote was unconscionable and unfair. Just cheap.

After the interview they had Steph with Dee Dee Myers and Torie Clarke critique the interview.

How come they always manage to get the Republican sounding like a RAT. If I was clueless idiot I would’ve thought Dee Dee was the Republican.

Gibson lost big time. I did not know who he was prior to this. That the campaign picked him for the first interview made be think possibly he was a competent and fair journalist.

That he misquoted Gov. Palin in a got you question and then when she argued wrongly argued that it was a correct quote and then asked a question from his own ignorance made him a no go with me. Gibson had a big opportunity to be viewed as credible by the public. He blew it big time.
