Fired Official: Governor Sarah Palin Did Not Tell the Truth to ABC

Walt Monegan Says He Was Called to Gov.'s Office Over a "Private Family Matter"

"She's not telling the truth when she told ABC neither she nor her husband pressured me to fire Trooper Wooten," said Walt Monegan, the Alaskan official whose dismissal by Sarah Palin is the focus of a state investigation known as "Troopergate". "And she's not telling the truth to the media about her reasons for firing me."

In an exclusive interview with ABC News.com, former Alaska Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan said he resisted pressure by the First Couple to re-open an old case against a state trooper, who was in a hotly contested divorce and custody battle with the Governor's sister Molly.

Alaskan lawmakers are investigating whether Palin and her husband used the power of the Governor's office to conduct a personal vendetta against their former brother-in-law, whose behavior during the 2005 divorce was described by the Palin family as " threatening."

In a 20/20 interview, Palin told ABC's Charles Gibson she dismissed Monegan for poor job performance and that neither she nor her husband pressured Monegan to fire State Trooper Wooten. "We never did. I never pressured him to hire or fire anybody," Palin said.

But Monegan told ABC News.com he was summoned to a meeting with Todd Palin in December 2006, shortly after Sarah Palin became governor.

"I was called to her Anchorage formal Governor's office to talk with Todd Palin about an issue that was a private family matter," recounted Monegan. Todd became "upset," Monegan recalled, when told the allegations had already been investigated and the case would not be re-opened.

"When Sarah later called to tell me the same thing, I thought to myself, 'I may not be long for this job.'"

We finally got something on the Moose Shooter besides her pregnant daughter -- even if it is an unsubstantiated, contrived story by a disgruntled liberal former state employee.

This guy has got some dirt on him too. His ex says he threatened her life with a gun, and he dislocated her shoulder. He admits to it, but said it was while “playing”, just like the trooper Whooten was just “playing” when he taser his 10 year old.

This worthless sack of **** is still employed by the state of Alaska.

Just goes to show that integrity is not needed for some jobs.

The guy (who threatened to kill his wife) who would not fire the trooper (who threatened to kill Palins father)

If this is not a GOP talking point, sigh. Too easy....

This man is a vile human. What a scum bucket. I hope it gets out on Hannity or Rush what this man did to his ex wife. It matters because it shows what kind of person he is, and why he would ignore another abusive man..the trooper.

And of course, it was in her office (no phone records), they were alone (no witnesses), and it was on a weekend (no one to see him come or go). Typical HE SAID SHE SAID and ABC is going to believe this guy because it’ll make Palin look bad.

I hope you’re not holding your breath while you wait.

If you are, I fear you are not long for this world.

"I was called to her Anchorage formal Governor's office to talk with Todd Palin about an issue that was a private family matter," recounted Monegan.

Someone should tell ABC that Google is their friend...

"But the problem with Monegan’s charge is.… Todd Palin was *ordered* to talk to Monegan since Wooten was a potential threat against Alaska’s first family."

"Monegan has also raised questions about the propriety of the First Gentleman, Todd Palin, meeting with Monegan right after the Governor was elected to discuss security concerns surrounding a state trooper. That meeting occurred following standard questioning of any newly-elected Governor and First Family members regarding security detail concerns. The First Gentleman was specifically told to meet with Monegan by the Governor’s top security detail, Special Agent Bob Cockrell, to forward serious concerns that were substantiated in an internal trooper investigation. The concerns regarding the trooper included: using a Taser stun gun on his stepson, illegally killing a moose and driving with an open container in his patrol car. The First Gentleman also expressed concern over death threats made against a family member by the trooper.

“When made aware of the security concerns regarding a state trooper, I instructed the First Gentleman to contact the commissioner of Public Safety,” Cockrell said. “It is standard protocol to ask every governor about any threats they perceive or have realized. I will not hesitate to set the record straight in answering these false allegations by former Commissioner Monegan.”

Cockrell, who joined the Alaska State Troopers in 1963, started with the Office of the Governor in 1983, under Governor Bill Sheffield. He is now serving his sixth governor."

Looks and sounds like another thug. No wonder he refused to fire the abusive trooper. I’d like to see a real reporter take this clown apart.

Refresh my memory - is this just like Bush getting rid of a US Attorney? Folks may not like it, but at the end of the day, she can fire without cause? If so, then why doesn’t that point get brought out more? What could the “Troopergate” investigation even do? Issue a finding that “We don’t like it.”???

My my my...I have to wonder how much he was paid. After all you do know that there were money offers for dirt. This idiot is quoted as saying time and time again that she did not pressure him. Does anyone know if one time it was under oath?
What I would like to have investigated is why the Trooper was not fired after all the charges against him were made?
What did the Trooper have on Monegan that made him keep him on? Turn about is fair play Monegan....perhaps we should look further into your practices and if indeed you did lie under oath.
