OTTAWA (Reuters) - Canada's opposition Liberals could suffer their worst electoral showing in nearly a quarter century, the Ekos polling company projected on Monday. Based on surveys over the past three days, Ekos said the ruling Conservatives were slipping away from their chance to form a majority government, but could still take twice as many seats as the Liberals. ... Ekos projected the Conservatives would win 147 of the 308 seats in the House of Commons, shy of the 155 needed for a majority but above the 127 they have now. The Liberals would drop to 71 seats from 95. Their previous worst electoral result was in 1984 when they were reduced to 40 seats. The separatist Bloc Quebecois would rise by one seat to 49, the left-leaning New Democrats would pick up 10 seats to win 40, and the Greens would have one, Ekos projected. The Ekos data was based on an automated telephone survey from Friday through Sunday, putting the Conservatives at 35 percent of the vote, the Liberals at 25 percent, the New Democrats at 19 percent, the Greens at 11 percent and the Bloc at 9 percent ...

Canada may get another minority Conservative government. But the Liberals look to come out of the election bloodied.

Canadian conservatives should keep working incrementally until Canada is a major economic competitor to the US. Once that happens, there will be a consequence for Democrat fiscal policy and they will wither away.

But I want it now. :P

(When I first saw this headline, I was wondering how someone would predict some 2033 election with a poll. ;))

Stephane Dion is the worst Liberal candidate since John Turner. He looks like someone's professor. And the fact he's pushing for higher taxes and more regulations is turning Canadians off!

Can we speed it up so they can lose now instead? I know, patience is a virtue, but 25 years is a long time.

1984 was the Mulroney landslide. He won back to back majorities for the then Progressive Conservatives until they were wiped out in 1993.

Easy. Liberals often don’t have kids. Conservatives usually do.

Democracy is a game of numbers. The biggest population segment is the Boomers, and most of them will be gone in 25 years. Which means that the majority of those remaining... will most likely be conservative.

Not quite.
Cons 35%
Libs 25% = very pink under doofus
NDP + watermelons 30% = real red
Bloc 9% = pink ??

The Canadian population is very left. The reason why the Left won't get voted in because the Left divides its vote now among three parties. Its the reverse of the situation from 1993 to 2000, when the conservatives were divided among a couple of small feuding parties, allowing the Liberals to win three back to back majorities.

Big deal. A week is a long time in politics. 25 years is an eternity. Noöne can predict that far ahead.

Canada has several competitive advantages to the US but don't expect a country one tenth the size of the US to become a major economic competitor.

Canada had a huge advantage in labor costs when the CDN$ was 70 cents and health care costs were low to non existent. Now, with the currencies virtually at par, manufacturers are just as well off to produce goods in the US. Canada has an advantage in some agricultural products but entrenched interests on both sides of the border make trade difficult to impossible in these areas. Ask Canadian consumers of dairy and poultry products and US consumers of beef.

The big advantage that Canada has is in production of energy. Canada is actually exploiting its energy reserves, and selling them south. If the US starts to drill, this advantage will also lessen.
