Hazleton Mayor Lou Barletta holds a 9-point lead over 12-term incumbent Democrat Paul Kanjorski in the 11th Congressional District, according to a poll released today. The Franklin & Marshall College survey, the first independent poll conducted in the district, confirms what Democrats have feared and what Republicans have touted for months: Kanjorski is seriously at risk of losing his seat. Buoyed by his support among independents and even many Democrats, Barletta leads 44 percent to 35 percent. The poll also surveyed the presidential race in the northeast Pennsylvania district. Democrat Barack Obama leads Republican John McCain 43 percent to 40 percent, with 14 percent undecided. That margin fell within the poll's 4.2 percentage point margin of error.

Awesome! Go Lou!
This makes my day. Think I’ll go contribute to Lou’s campaign.
Wow. Only 35% for an incumbent? This poll seems to have a very high number of undecideds though, in the Congressional and POTUS race.
Holy cow, a pickup! This would go along with DeLay’s district and Foley’s district? Does anyone have info on those races? What about Harry Mitchell’s seat in AZ?
It is about time that this crook Kanjorski goes down. He is pure slime.
How does this tie in to the POTUS election in terms of districts?
Was this district one that went for Kerry last time?
According to the FEC site, at the end of June Barletta had about $322K cash on hand, with $168K in debt. Kanjorski has $2.2M on hand, with no debt.
I got a call from Lou’s campaign yesterday, and I pledged $100. He is a good man and worth supporting.
Another internal poll shows Barletta ahead of Kanjorski (8/6/08)
One of those internal polls back in June showed only 39% felt Kanjorski deserved re-election.
Good to see that a mayor who made valiant attempts to address the illegal alien issue is having success in his run for Congress. And we also saw open borders Republican Chris Cannon of Utah (referred to as a Bush point man on amnesty) go down to defeat in the primary, defeated by an enforce the law, no amnesty challenger.
*ping*
His stand didn’t stop him from being Pa. mayor of the year.
I only wish he’d fix the pot holes at the end of my mother’s street; my wife can’t miss them when we visit.
Sorry to say I don’t know. Am not familiar with the area, just know of Lou from afar because of his good work on the illegal problem. Also know that Kanjorski is a real sleazeball from seeing report of his machinations on the tube.
PA 11 Kanjorski (D)
kerry 53 bush 47
gore 54 bush 43
so, that’s ahead of 2000 and 2004 - but it could be better.
I would think that Obama would do poorly up there. It’s Scranton / Wilkes-Barre.
I attended a fundraiser for Lou about a month ago in DC and had an opportunity to speak with him. Good guy and very strong on the immigration issue. I am cautiously optimistic that he will win. He has good grassroots support.
...[n]ationally, House Republicans are mostly playing defense. But Barlettas local notoriety gives them reason to believe they can bounce Kanjorski or Kanjo, as hes known in the district and pick up his seat in November.
Kanjorski continues to be plagued by revelations which first surfaced in 2002 that he directed millions of dollars in federal funds to companies owned by his family.
Barlettas first campaign ad criticized Kanjorski for directing $10 million in federal funds to a now-bankrupt technology company owned by his daughter and nephew. The National Republican Congressional Committee aired similar ads in August...
Conservative working-class Democrats are probably the largest voting block in the PA-11, and the pro-life Kanjorski usually carried them handily, but I think that turnout among those voters will be depressed by Obama being the Democrat presidential nominee and Kanjorski being such a crook, and those that do turn out will more likely vote for McCain/Palin and Barletta.
I guess that “The Pride of Scranton,” Joe Biden, didn’t help Obama here as much as the Democrats thought he would.
Wow, great news! Is Kanjorski a screw up? That is very low for a 12-term incumbent.
