The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Thursday shows Barack Obama gaining ground on John McCain for the third time in four days. The race for the White House is now tied with both candidates attracting 48% of the vote. Just a few days ago, McCain enjoyed a three-percentage point lead (see trends). Results are released every day at 9:30 a.m. Eastern and a FREE daily e-mail update is available.
The closeness of the race is confirmed by new state polling from Wisconsin and Oregon. While the ugliness of campaigns is always annoying to voters, just 23% believe that Election 2008 is more negative than most.
As the financial sector meltdown continues, consumer confidence has plummeted, falling 8% overnight. Forty-seven percent (47%) of voters now rate the economy as the top issue of Election 2008. That’s up from 41% this past Saturday morning. The number saying the country is heading in the right direction fell from 23% on Saturday to 18% now.
The financial crunch provides both opportunity and risk for the candidates. Voters are closely following the story but only one-in-four believe that either Obama or McCain is Very Likely to bring about the changes that are needed on Wall Street. Adding to the complexity for politicians everywhere is the fact that 49% worry that the federal government will do too much while just 36% are more worried that it won’t do enough.

The thing that’s fishy about this poll is that 96% of the folks are decided. That is pretty high.
Hey, people have been trying to tell these RINOs that the American people want conservatism. The excitement over Palin isn’t because she’s a woman. It’s because she is a genuine conservative who can articulate conservatism. She not only lives her values, but can clearly explain them without hesitation.
People are sick of the wishy-washy crap. They don’t like liberalism, but often don’t find any other alternative. And when the only thing that sort of suffices as an alternative becomes corrupt and even dumber than usual, they tune out.
McCain has to stop the wishy-washy crap, stop being afraid of the press, stop being cowed by Dems accusing Republicans of being ‘racist’. Control the argument, control the news cycle by coming out swinging.
Start with the following:
From now on, EVERY ad with a claim about our opponent will be given it’s own web page, where every claim will be FULLY documented. Go on, media and Dems. Call it ‘lies’. We’ve got the documentation and all you have is obfuscation and distortion.
He should come out with an internet ad saying the above and then hit Obama with Fanny Mae ties, treason, born alive, anti-gun, everything under the kitchen sink within 24 hours of that add, providing full documentation for all claims made.
Trust me, they are not prepared for this and will NOT know what to do about it.
I completely agree. That would be a very good way to be able to deal with Obama’s objections to the truth.
I don't think that that would actually be that hard to explain (such that even Obama would understand it). Lowering the standards for financing a house allowed people (not just the minorities) to afford a house that they shouldn't have bought. This artificially raised the value of housing (the bubble that recently burst). If minorities were assisted in purchasing housing within their means, they still would have had home ownership and, quite possibly, would still be in them.
The Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae game, in my opinion, was a pyramid scheme that would have continued working if the housing market continued to experience strong growth. Everyone was betting on a house being worth a lot more next year and would have covered the bad debt. When the housing market eroded, the rest was just a matter of time.

Saw a guy on Fox news last night (Mike Allen from the “Politico”) who said both candidates were using “placeholder” answers on the economy while they figured out what they really needed to say. Seems about right. McCain’s anti-capitalist streak comes out at the worst times-—like this.
LS, BattleGround the Gold Standard pollster, who is run Non Partisan, has McCain up 2 today.
After a horrible week for McCain, he is up 2 and Tied(RAS) in the wtow best pollsters.
I’m not worried about where McCain is now. I suspect if the election were held today, he’d get 274-279 EVs. I am concerned that for the first time in months, Obama may have a message that really appeals to blue-collar/middle class folks.
I got my McCain/Palin yard sign, ordered it the day she was announced........neighbors love it! they are “J” and want their own.....even strangers walking by. one lady this morning paused to gaze at the sign, then pointed to it and gave my husband a thumbs up and a smile......he didn’t even know her.
Point Taken.. I am hearing whispers here in the Chicago area about the Palin email hacking.
The Secret Service has pinned down the server to a Chicago ISP. And the AP will not release them.

Let’s see how this shakes out. McCain may think the Sheeple don’t want to see politicians blaming one another for this mess (as Obama and Dems are doing), and instead offer some kind of solution.
Is McCain right? I don’t know. His milquetoast moderate convention speech was a hit with the mushy middle even if we didn’t like it all that much.
Yah, it will be huge, even with the drive-bys. This is too Nixonesque for them to avoid.
