Rabbis for Obama Considered a First in American Politics
Jewish Exponent ^ | Jewish Telegraphic Agency | Eric Fingerhut

Posted on 09/22/2008 10:48:40 AM PDT by dalight

"These attacks that he's not supportive of Israel are just not true," said Rabbi Steve Bob of Congregation Etz Chaim in Lombard, Ill.

Jonathan Sarna, the Joseph H. & Belle R. Braun Professor of American Jewish History at Brandeis University, said he believes Rabbis for Obama is a first in the Jewish community.

"I certainly can remember many newspaper ads that rabbis would sign" backing a candidate, Sarna said, but "I can't remember another organization with this kind of title."

Given the increased mix of religion and politics that the United States has seen in the past 20 to 30 years, he added, it is much more likely for such a group to spring up now than it would have been early in the 20th century.

Bob said that he and other members of the organization are interested in publicly speaking -- under the Rabbis for Obama banner -- on behalf of the Democratic candidate across the country and are currently discussing how to become more involved in key swing states.

The letter the rabbis signed states that the group backs Obama because "he will best support the issues important to us in the Jewish community."

I wonder if some of these Rabbi's would like to change their minds in light of current events.

In case you are wondering if your Rabbi has decided to join this endeavor..

Hold the anti-semitic knee-jerking if you please.

From: http://rabbisforobama.org/read.htm

As rabbis who believe that Barack Obama is the best candidate to be President of the United States, we have formed “Rabbis for Obama” as a grassroots organization of rabbis from all movements and backgrounds. We join together to support Senator Obama for President, and we do so in the belief that he will best support the issues important to us in the Jewish community.

Some of us know Senator Obama personally, and we recognize that he has been inspired by Jewish values such as Tikkun Olam and the pursuit of justice, and he is deeply committed as well to a civil discourse between opposing arguments. We also know that Senator Obama will inspire young people, both in the Jewish community and the wider American community, to become more involved in improving this country and repairing the world.

We know that Barack Obama's longstanding, stalwart support for Israel is a testament to his own principles as well as the strong bi-partisan pro-Israel movement in America, and we fear that the attempts by some to use Israel as a wedge issue against him - unjustifiably - is dangerous in that it politicizes the pro-Israel position. Most importantly it has completely distorted Senator Obama’s record. With his tough but pragmatic approach to Iran, Senator Obama is in the best position to restore faith in America as a leader in the fight against serious threats to Israel, our allies, and the United States.

Senator Barack Obama inspires in us the hope for an America once more called to its best values. We know him to be a man of incredible integrity, born of a deep and abiding spiritual faith based on the teachings of the Hebrew Prophets, and committed to achieving a world of peace with justice for all people.

We are fully aware that a smear campaign against Senator Obama has been waged in the Jewish community, and we feel it is our duty as Jewish leaders to fight for the truth and against Lashon Hara. Senator Obama has been viciously attacked using innuendoes, rumors, and guilt by association, and we urge our fellow American Jews to judge Senator Obama based on his own record and the clear statements he has made about his personal beliefs and principles. Continuing efforts to defame him and distort his record help perpetuate a deeply disturbing political process in our country.

We hope that the members of the American Jewish community will seek to learn more about the Senator, his story, and his positions on issues. Senator Obama’s record and background clearly demonstrate that he shares our commitment to change the direction of this country, both at home and around the globe. Thank you,

Suicidal Liberal Socialists with a “Rabbi” tagged before their names. About as Jewish as Pfleger and Pelosi are Christian.

Don’t these people READ.

That's true. Also anti-Catholic, which is why he picked Biden (a "Catholic" who doesn't even dare to present himself for Communion in his home diocese because he knows he'd be refused). Obama has support from people like the "J Street Jews," behind the cancellation of the Clinton and Palin appearances, and "Catholics for Free Choice," a group of completely excommunicated former Catholics who use the "brand name" but are not Catholic in any way. The way the lefties abuse religion, any religion, is disgusting.

There is one name on this list that deeply surprises me. I have to think he has been misled, but otherwise. I just am sad that this has occurred especially as the events in New York have unfolded. But worse, because they have branded negative information about Obama as spreading lies and rumors, it may not be possible for them to see the truth before it is too late.

These Rabbis must be from the liberal, reform side of the American Jewish community. Too many seem to have a love/hate view of their place in Judaism and with Israel. They have a wish to keep their Jewish heritage, but not the laws of God and man that are inconvenient.

Instead, they embrace secular humanism as their life goal and believe talk can overwhelm evil. When things don’t work out, they blame others who they believe obstruct them in their hopes. What they don’t accept is their hopes are not consistent with reality-evil exists and fallible man needs God’s rules.

It's scary to realize that there are 486 supposed “Rabbis” that will willingly walk their people into the arms of those that want nothing more than to annihilate them. I guess these “rabbis” have learned absolutely nothing from history!

The majority of Israelis look upon all religion with amusement, but they are adamant that the rabbi they don’t need has to be Orthodox. These guys, Reform and Conservative, have been campaigning for 60 years for official recognition that they too are rabbis and are basically laughed at. This will just make them appear all that more ridiculous.

Rabbis for Suicide is more like it.

These are almost uniformly Reform and Reconstructionist Rabbis. Man are women, proving the point. They do NOT represent traditional Judaism or the values inherent in traditional Judaism.

I am proud to be part of a group in my city to take out an ad in favor of John McCain. The ad also blasts Obama on issues of importance to Jews.

These Rabbis must be from the liberal, reform side of the American Jewish community. Too many seem to have a love/hate view of their place in Judaism and with Israel. They have a wish to keep their Jewish heritage, but not the laws of God and man that are inconvenient.

I would guess many of the Rabbi's on this list are Reform or such but not all by any means. I recognize Conservative and Orthodox Rabbi's on this list as well.

I don't know how many of these Rabbi's have congregations but I was deeply glad that my own Rabbis are not on this list.
