This bailout is bad for a lot of reasons... but the principal one being that it is flatly unconstitutional. The government cannot just go in and take over private property without paying due compensation.

It's un-Constitutional because there isn't a shred of authority anywhere in that Document allowing Congress to 'bail out' any business, anywhere, for any reason.

Period.

I know, I know...cancel the taxes from this point until the end of the year. On EVERYTHING, EVERY WHERE, on EVERYBODY in the U.S.

Then let’s sit back and watch the fun.

You either believe in the free market system or you don’t. In the good old days, congress would pee away a hundred million . Then it was a billion. Then it was a hundred billion. Now we are approaching trillions. Congress is completely out of control and knows no limits in spending tax payers money. We can’t trust them with millions. Why should we trust them with trillions? Why should we even listen to them? If they knew what they were doing we wouldn’t be here.

The bailout without a real energy plan is not a plan at all. If we can’t keep from sending the current 700 billion from going overseas then I say that the bailout will be for naught.

I want the golden parachutes back. I want the excessive salaries back. I want anyone connected with this fraud prosecuted. That includes any and all in Congress, the administration, the Congressional aides, even the POTUS who benefited in any way from all of this prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

Paying what? "DUE"? I think the Fifth Amendment refers to "JUST COMPENSATION".

However, the deal is that the government is OFFERING something, not TAKING something.

It's conceivable that some banks hold bad paper and don't wish to give it up. We have an example right here in this neighborhood. A major Department of Army project is taking place in the immediate area ~ thousands of employees are being moved from militarily indefensible offices in Alexandria and elsewhere to a new compound pretty much impervious to truck bombers and so forth.

At the same time the large shopping mall nearby is being torn down and one with twice the space is being built on the site PLUS high-rise condominiums are being built all over the place.

This is development taking place in spite of (or in the face of) economic disaster elsewhere. (Uh, we got a subway station here, and two commuter rail lines).

There's a bank holding mortgages on 8 properties here were the owners defaulted on payments. That bank is preparing to rent out the properties but they refuse to budget on their higher than current market rate asking prices. They know that within a year in this local area they will get much more than the current price.

The US government will not be spending a penny on those 8 properties.

If the government is taking private assets, then it has to compensate the owners. With money equivalent to the sum of their losses? That would entail considerable litigation. Its not an easy matter to inject $700 billion in our financial system - not overnight.

But this isn’t the first time the government has intervened in private business, is it? What comes to my mind is Chrysler. Much less important than what is going on now, imo.

I don’t like the current response, but I sure don’t like the alternative.

Within hours of the Treasury announcement Friday, economists had proposed preferable alternatives. Their core insight is that it is better to boost the banking system by increasing its capital than by reducing its loans. Given a fatter capital cushion, banks would have time to dispose of the bad loans in an orderly fashion. Taxpayers would be spared the experience of wandering into a bad-loan bazaar and being ripped off by every merchant.

I'm all for it!

But how do you do that?

I agree except I don’t think POTUS gained any benefit from this. One might suggest that he erred in not getting advice from some not so closely tied to this mess (Sec Treas is an ex Goldman Sachs exec, as is I believe his chief of staff.) It was certainly foolhardy to rush out a draft with NO PROVISIONS for oversight. I doubt it would have withstood a court challenge.

So is it a good thing or not?

I know these next few hours...days are critical ....

According to the “bad forecasts” if this “bailout” does not happen - EVERYTHING WILL CRASH - ECONOMICALLY.

I just want to know if that is true....or not.

We have had our own alarmists here on FR - some can be believed and some are not to be believed.

What is the real answer? Allow a depression to occur - is that what is coming? If so, do the Republicans really want to be the “cause” of that by “opposing” this “bailout”?

Just looking for facts.

There's no situation that needs to be remedied in haste. Let there be hearings, let time do its work and perhaps it will not be necessary down the road.
