Poll: Economic Discontent Boosts Barack Obama Over John McCain (Obama 52 , McCain 43)
ABC ^ | Sept. 24, 2008 | GARY LANGER

Democrat Takes 52-43 Lead Among Likely Voters, Erases Republican's Post-Palin Pick Gains

Barack Obama has seized the reins of economic discontent, vaulting over John McCain's convention gains by persuading voters he both better understands their economic troubles and can better address them.

In a head-to-head-match-up he's now supported by 52 percent of likely voters vs. McCain's 43 percent, the first significant advantage for either candidate among likely voters in ABC/Post polls.

Add third-party candidates Ralph Nader and Bob Barr and it's essentially the same, 51-43 percent.

The contest has shifted from a 49-47 percent McCain-Obama race immediately after the Republican convention.

McCain's bounce -- on individual issues and attributes as well as in overall preference -- is gone.

I'm not surprised. If people vote their feelings, nothing we can do about it.

Partisanship has not significantly changed. Among registered voters 38 percent in this
poll identify themselves as Democrats, 28 percent as Republicans and 29 percent as
independents. That’s very similar to what it was in the last ABC/Post poll – 36-28-32
percent – the previous one, and indeed the average all year, 38-28-30 percent. What’s
changed, instead, is the preference among independents, one of those swing voter groups
to watch closely in the next 40 days.

METHODOLOGY – This ABC News/Washington Post poll was conducted by telephone
Sept. 19-22, 2008, among a random sample of 1,082 adults, including an oversample of
African Americans (weighted to their correct share of the national population), for a total
of 163 black respondents. Results among the 916 registered voters surveyed have a 3-
point error margin; among the 780 likely voters, 3.5-points. Sampling, data collection and
tabulation by TNS of Horsham, PA.

Given Obama's rallies with their shrinking numbers, I wonder where ABC/Washington Post got a significant likely voter shift to Obama from.

Look at the dates the poll was taken 9/19-22. This is old news from last week when Obama got a bump from the economic news. That has pretty much dissipated, plus it’s an ABC/WP poll. 38% Dem, 28% Rep and 29% Ind????

Is this supposed to be a national poll? Hilarious. Where do they get these numbers? Battleground has John McCain +1 and Rassmussen tie. This polling reminds me of the exit polling in 2004. LIES, LIES, LIES. I take Rasmussen’s polls seriously, most everyone else is posturing for Obama.

Exactly as the Democrats and RINO dupes have planned. Block drilling, drive up gas prices, squeeze the middle class. Block Wall Street reform, trash the economy, get the middle class all worried and pissed off, media helps to blame Republicans (never mind about Chris Dodd, Barack Obama and Barney Frank and their acceptance of BRIBES).

Too bad the Republicans are too weak and cowardly to fight back properly.

So he is slightly over 50%, that lead can diminish quickly especially if McCain does well in the economic debate happening in October. If I am correct this is nothing special. This is what the polls, for better or for worse, have been telling us about how people think the economy should be handled for a while, I think that was even claimed in 2004. I think that there is sort of a psychology that explains it but only 9 points ahead? Than the MOE accounts for at least three points, so it might be only 6 points ahead shifting Obama back to the 40%. It also seems like 5% are undecided if this isn’t an even 100% when adding the two. So in all details, this lead can be utterly destroyed.

The sampling is instructive and probably the nature of the questions asked. A breakout by one candidate this early is surprising.

The race narrowed today in Rasmussen, Gallup and I think Hotline tracking polls. McCain is also ahead by two in the Battleground tracking poll. This is a poll of adults and it’s an ABC news poll too. I think that’s all that needs to be said.

Exactly.

They are undersampling Republicans.

And oversampling Independents.

It’s been noticed by some on here that alot of those so called “Independents” that answer these polls really are Democrats that don’t want to tell the pollster who they really are.

But it will not stop all the Morning Shows to lead this as their morning feeding of propaganda to the Sheeple.

We'll see if the rest of the MSM follows suit. Bear in mind this kind of poll is designed to shape opinion. We know nothing about actual voter preferences and Kellyanne Conway predicts the opposite in November.

11 point bounce in 2 weeks? I somehow doubt the electorate is this fickle.

Yes, the economic meltdown has dominated the news. But what exactly has Obama done so great to demonstrate his superior economic skills during this crisis? Nothing, NADA.

I have followed elections very closely since 1980. And polling since 2000. I have never seen polls bounce around like they are this year.

If their goal is to depress folks, it may work.

So there is a higher percentage of RATS in this poll than the last one, by two percentage points. And I dont believe that the spread is 10 pct points between the parties. Raz uses 5.5 pct points for likely voters (33.5% GOP, 39% RAT, rest indie).

That's exactly their goal. To depress Republican turnout in November and encourage people to accept an Obama victory as inevitable. ABC/WashPost are in the tank for Obama. I agree - an 11 point turnaround for Obama is very fishy. But if it succeeds in panicking the GOP and the base, it will have achieved its purpose. Whether its an accurate portrayal or not of voter sentiment is beside the point. The MSM will stop at nothing to get Obama elected President - even if they have to lie to do it.

As always, the devil is in the details.

These findings totally contradict all other polls. Even in polls that are close, voters by a large marigin picked McCain on these issues.

Polls should be given the same scrutiny as “news”. When they come from a known enemy like ABC, they should be given double scrutiny, I read the whole poll, it doesn’t pass the sniff test.

The media sees the economy as an OPPORTUNITY to show Obama ahead and influence thought, in this window, expect heavily cooked polls like this.

Read the details, and it is amazing. Obama now has the lead on who best to handle the war in Iraq!

What is Obama’s economic plan? Raise taxes. That’s it.

If this poll is true, we are in serious trouble as a country.

With Obama as president, and a democratic congress, we will be back in the stone age in 4 years.

Decent people are genuinely confused about the cause of this financial nightmare. Republicans are split on the bailout solution. McCain stated that he knows nothing about economics. This may comeback to haunt. The quote may be played at the debate. If jobs, savings and homes are the issues in November (which they will be) there is no one on the ticket with real demonstrated knowledge of how to tackle finance questions.
McCain may have been a bit too maverick in his VP choice. He was repeatedly advised to pick a known finance whiz. We'll see.
