With extraordinary stakes on the line, President Bush has invited both presidential candidates and the leaders of the House and Senate to the White House on Thursday in hopes of securing a bill to rescue the economy.
Bush took the unusual step Wednesday night of calling Democratic Sen. Barack Obama directly to invite him to the meeting, White House press secretary Dana Perino said. An Obama spokesman said the senator would attend. The White House has also invited Republican Sen. John McCain.
Perino said the goal of the session is to make progress -- fast -- on a bipartisan solution to the biggest economic crisis in decades.
She said the call between Bush and Obama lasted several minutes and was "a good conversation."
Obama spokesman Bill Burton said the Democratic presidential contender "will continue to work in a bipartisan spirit and do whatever is necessary to come up with a final solution."
The move by Bush came just a short time before he was to address the nation about the financial crisis.

Obama will still try to take credit for any resolution that comes out of this, just like he claimed that Bush was following his recommendation for troop withdrawal from Iraq, even though the drawdown was already in the plans, for anyone who was paying attention.
The White House staff should put a hidden camera in the meeting, and then leak the embarrassing footage of a clueless 0bama stammering and stuttering as he demonstrates he’s clearly way out of his league.

Barry will go on television and tell us all how he called Bush and invested him to the oval office to work out this financial crisis.
This will be a media bonanza for Obama.I am afraid it will be spun as Bush is in such trouble that he pleaded with Obama to come and rescue him.Look at the headline.Obama is asked to come and blessedly agrees.McCain is simply invited. I appreciated the President explaining it. I think Paulson was handing him a bill of goods designed to profit Hank’s Wall Street buddies (and himself when he goes back to Wall Street in January). He hoped President Bush would fall for it, but Bush demanded caps on executive pay, which put the brakes on Paulson’s money train.
$700 billion is still too much, and they must mandate reverse auctions.
Bush lets Obama know he won’t be able to just vote present on this. You are a senator Obama, and you will have to vote and answer for your vote, good or bad.
This economic crisis wasn't helping McCain. This is an attempt to take the issue of the campaign table.
If voters really accepted what media says unskeptically, then McCain’s poll numbers would be at 10% and average joe’s would be demanding that Palin get the electric chair.
Exactly! I can't believe this! McCain had Obama on the ropes over this and Bush just saved Obama’s arse. Stupid is as stupid does.
We need to start a meme on left-wing sites that Obama is a lackey for Bush. He will do whatever Bush wants him to do, even stop taking his message of Hope and Change to the American people. Maybe next he will be tap-dancing in the Rose Garden to entertain Laura, Jenna, and the younger Barbara.

As it stands the president and party in power take the blame for what’s gone wrong .. you can see it in McCain’s sudden drop in polling numbers. By inviting Obama, it deflects that perception. It’s actually a smart move. They are not going to tolerate the ‘Christmas tree” ornaments the D’s are pushing.
This move by Bush makes Letterman look like the self-important ass that he is.
