Palin stumps at cheesesteak shop in Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA—Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin takes her cheesesteak with Cheese Whiz and onions.

The Republican vice presidential candidate made a brief campaign stop at Tony Luke's steak shop in South Philadelphia on Saturday evening. Wearing jeans and a beige raincoat, Palin greeted curious onlookers, signed autographs and posed for pictures before ordering two steaks to go.

"Sarah, your steak is ready," a cashier said over the loudspeaker a few minutes after she ordered.

As dozens of onlookers crowded around her, Palin headed back to the window to pick up the order. The cashier told her the order was on the house, so Palin tossed her cash into a donation jar outside the window. A smiling Palin signed autographs on scraps of paper at the window while she waited.

"Thank you so much for letting me stop in," she said before picking up the bags and heading back to her SUV with 14-year-old daughter Willow at her side.

Ordering cheesesteaks at a Philadelphia steak shop is a longtime tradition in the City of Brotherly Love, where the sandwich is a cultural icon.

Palin said she thinks Arizona Sen. John McCain was "awesome" and "absolutely on his game" in Friday night's presidential debate with Democratic Sen. Barack Obama. Both candidates have been campaigning heavily in Pennsylvania, expected to be a key battleground in the November election.

One undecided voter at Saturday's stop said she was charmed after a brief talk with Palin, and more inclined to vote for McCain. Shannon Sampere, 24, of Newark, Del., said she and Palin talked about good bakeries in the area, adding that she found her to be very down to earth.

"She's a very genuine person," Sampere said.

My wife and I are going to a Navy reunion in October in Philadelphia. My son is now in the Navy and stationed in Maine. My daughter is working for the Feds and living in Maryland. They are both joining us for part of the weekend.

One of the things I told my kids I was insisting on was a Phily Cheese Steak outing. One of the places recommended by a Freeper was Tony Lukes. This is so far the place we will be. What do any of you people think?

Well..I just flip mine on the side and take a bite on the side with the toppings to sort of cut it down to size, then the next bite on the cheesesteak itself.

I would let Red State Updates: Jackie Broyles, interupt my lunch anytime. A suggestion for the next Presidential Debate: switch moderators at the last minute and put Jackie Broyles and Dunlap as co-moderators./Just Asking - seoul62......

People come up with the silliest reasons to judge politicians. Who cares how he likes his cheesesteak, or even whether he likes it at all?

FedEx wouldn’t work the grease would soak thru the box!! That’s how you know it’s quality! If you try and carry one in a paper bag the grease stains will take up the whole side of the bag!!! MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM Cheesesteak

I don’t think Hillary carried cash.

So, I guess that makes it okay to stiff to your waitress.

I hope she took in the Flyers preseason game which was last NHL game at the Spectrum this afternoon. That building was the foundation of hockey in Philly. The Flyers and Sixers moved across the street to the Center 10 years ago, but that was the place were Philly saw its first major championship in many years back in 1974 with the Broad Street Bullies. Its been the home of the Flyers minor league team the Phantoms since but they are tearing it down in the spring for a new complex.

Its a shame because the place is the best place to see arena sport as you are right in top of the action. There isn't a bad seat in the house. Flyers and Sixers game were a raucous affair.

Best moment? I was there with a friend celebrating the birth of my daughter, wife was still in hospital. JJ Daigneault scored at the end of game six of the Stanley Cup Finals against Gretsky’s Edmonton Oilers in 1987 to send the series back to Edmonton for game seven. The Flyers were considered dead meat in that series. But that goal shook the foundations. The Center recently installed 2 freighter ship horns to rock the house on goals but it really pales to that moment.BTW Flyers crowned their new captain Mike Richards after honoring all their past team captains (sans Eric Lindros) and he scored 2 shorthanded goals in a 4-2 win over Carolina... Very cool

Is that the wonderful shop that has the “Order in English” sign?

I was thinking the exact same thing. That dude has been fighting the city for years.

God bless him too.

Gov Sarah Palin knows the difference between right and wrong, just like our Founding Fathers. She's authentic and will act with integrity. Period.

Obama has a history of shadiness. Prefer the integruous Gov Sarah Palin every time, vs the shady well connected Letterman-approved Chicago bully politician. Gov Palin is someone who holds a great deal of integrity within her character.

No not at all. I was making a point that Hillary is too regal to carry cash. I’m sure some aid pays all her bills.
