PHILADELPHIAAlaska Gov. Sarah Palin takes her cheesesteak with Cheese Whiz and onions.
The Republican vice presidential candidate made a brief campaign stop at Tony Luke's steak shop in South Philadelphia on Saturday evening. Wearing jeans and a beige raincoat, Palin greeted curious onlookers, signed autographs and posed for pictures before ordering two steaks to go.
"Sarah, your steak is ready," a cashier said over the loudspeaker a few minutes after she ordered.
As dozens of onlookers crowded around her, Palin headed back to the window to pick up the order. The cashier told her the order was on the house, so Palin tossed her cash into a donation jar outside the window. A smiling Palin signed autographs on scraps of paper at the window while she waited.
"Thank you so much for letting me stop in," she said before picking up the bags and heading back to her SUV with 14-year-old daughter Willow at her side.
Ordering cheesesteaks at a Philadelphia steak shop is a longtime tradition in the City of Brotherly Love, where the sandwich is a cultural icon.
Palin said she thinks Arizona Sen. John McCain was "awesome" and "absolutely on his game" in Friday night's presidential debate with Democratic Sen. Barack Obama. Both candidates have been campaigning heavily in Pennsylvania, expected to be a key battleground in the November election.
One undecided voter at Saturday's stop said she was charmed after a brief talk with Palin, and more inclined to vote for McCain. Shannon Sampere, 24, of Newark, Del., said she and Palin talked about good bakeries in the area, adding that she found her to be very down to earth.
"She's a very genuine person," Sampere said.
But she doesn’t know all the insiders and foreign leaders and Wall street and the MSM and how Washington works and how pacs work and how the electorate expects you to support them and how hollyweird feels and and and and and and and and and................CHANGE!
I sure wouldn't take the risk of jabbing my finger at a Marine that way.
Kerry is a clueless moron.
Oh Man, I wish I knew that; well, her advisors have good taste—Tony Luke’s is the best cheesesteak in the City, imho. I go there all the time. Oh well.
Did she get “wit” or “wit out”?
Thank you for the refresher. I hope those proud Marines told that pompous, arrogant twit to hit the road!!!!! Could you imagine Lurch, interupting your lunch?/Just Asking - seoul62........
Nah, but that’s ok. She knew to order it “wit”. That’s good enough!
Yes. I cannot begin to imagine how many votes that lost him in Philly. No joke.
It is interesting that Sarah stopped at Tony Luke's though. The slightly bigger names in Philly as far as cheesesteak shops go are Geno's and Pat's. They're basically next door to each other around 10th and Federal. My preference is Geno's. Tony Luke does have a shop at the ball park, though, and I think that has helped promote their name a lot.
You have to widen your stance and sort of bend over so that all the mess doesn’t fall on you. Otherwise just enjoy.
You MUST show Reverence and Respect for the Perfect sandwich!! LOL
Eventhough the Beef on a Weck comes in a close second in my book.
I don’t think Hillary carried cash.
You eat it with gusto and without pinkie fingers in the air. And if you do it right, grease is everywhere but on your clothes.
One of the things I told my kids I was insisting on was a Phily Cheese Steak outing. One of the places recommended by a Freeper was Tony Lukes. This is so far the place we will be. What do any of you people think?
notice the banner on the page...It says
Tony Lukes proudly supports the brave Americans
who defend our freedom across the globe everyday.
If you click on that banner it will take you to a page honoring the military.
No, but hey! I would certainly let Governor Palin interrupt my lunch. :-)
Well..I just flip mine on the side and take a bite on the side with the toppings to sort of cut it down to size, then the next bite on the cheesesteak itself.
If it’s good enough for Sarah it’s good enough for me!!! Just make sure you know how to oreder one correctly!
(Real Men of Genius) Philly Cheesesteak maker:
I TOLD YOU PEOPLE! Tony Luke’s IS the absolute best Philly Steak!
I would let Red State Updates: Jackie Broyles, interupt my lunch anytime. A suggestion for the next Presidential Debate: switch moderators at the last minute and put Jackie Broyles and Dunlap as co-moderators./Just Asking - seoul62......
People come up with the silliest reasons to judge politicians. Who cares how he likes his cheesesteak, or even whether he likes it at all?
FedEx wouldn’t work the grease would soak thru the box!! That’s how you know it’s quality! If you try and carry one in a paper bag the grease stains will take up the whole side of the bag!!! MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM Cheesesteak
I can’t WAIT til Thursday!!!
Palin is going to absolutely SKEWER Biden. I’ve already bought a bottle of Moet in anticipation (and I reserve the right to phone in sick on Frday!).
Its a shame because the place is the best place to see arena sport as you are right in top of the action. There isn't a bad seat in the house. Flyers and Sixers game were a raucous affair.
Best moment? I was there with a friend celebrating the birth of my daughter, wife was still in hospital. JJ Daigneault scored at the end of game six of the Stanley Cup Finals against Gretsky’s Edmonton Oilers in 1987 to send the series back to Edmonton for game seven. The Flyers were considered dead meat in that series. But that goal shook the foundations. The Center recently installed 2 freighter ship horns to rock the house on goals but it really pales to that moment.BTW Flyers crowned their new captain Mike Richards after honoring all their past team captains (sans Eric Lindros) and he scored 2 shorthanded goals in a 4-2 win over Carolina... Very cool
(I dont think Hillary carried cash.)
(So, I guess that makes it okay to stiff to your waitress)
There is a Bill Clinton joke in there somewhere....LOL
I was thinking the exact same thing. That dude has been fighting the city for years.
God bless him too.
Obama has a history of shadiness. Prefer the integruous Gov Sarah Palin every time, vs the shady well connected Letterman-approved Chicago bully politician. Gov Palin is someone who holds a great deal of integrity within her character.
Much like, “where can I get me one of them huntin licenses”.
No not at all. I was making a point that Hillary is too regal to carry cash. I’m sure some aid pays all her bills.
“FedEx wouldnt work the grease would soak thru the box!! Thats how you know its quality! If you try and carry one in a paper bag the grease stains will take up the whole side of the bag!!! MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM Cheesesteak”
I’ll load up my SUV with some St. Louis toasted ravioli, some Steak n Shake and White Castle hamburgers, and meet you at the Ohio/Indiana stateline.....
Is that the original Philly cheesteak place?...I think my niece used to live about 2 blocks away...
If I understand correctly, you just don’t order it with Swiss cheese. What else do I need to know? I don’t want to seem like a dolt in front of my kids.
Someone on another thread said she was wearing a Sarahcuda T-shirt. I guess this confirms it.
No, that’s Geno’s owned by the outspoken and wonderfully patriotic Joey Vento.
It’s not that JFK likes swiss; rather its his pretension in pretending be be like one of the masses he detests and he can’t even pull that off without his elitism oozing out like cheese-wiz.
Don't even bother arguing. I will brook no dissent. The supremacy of the Mama's steak (onions, wit') is not my opinion; it is a matter of cold, scientific fact. Eat one and be haunted for a lifetime by memories of man's most perfect sandwich.
I don’t think swiss is one of the choices...It depends on where you go and what your preferences are. Some places have Cheese Wiz and some don’t. I personally like mine WIT Onions and (Sharp) Provolone cheese. You can get one with various other toppings depending on your tastes. Sometimes I get hot/sweet peppers if the place has them. Just read the sign make sure you know your order before getting to the window. No Worries....
I think McCain-Palin is going to get a lot more votes in Philly than most national Republicans do....
I hear the new Pakistani President is completely smitten.
Dont use the term sub or hero if you want a hoagie.
Thanks. All these pings are getting me real hungry for one WIT hot peppers.
Section 21, row 4 seats 3-8. That is where my husband grew up. Then he married me and that is where my children grew up. We have had the tickets in our family since the year before Bobby Clarke. There are so many memories of being in that place. I can’t believe they are going to knock it down.
Throw in some SKYLINE CHILLI 5-Way and you’ve got a deal my friend!! LOL
Man, I love Tony Luke’s! It’s been a few years since I’ve been to Philly, but I visited there often in the 1990s and always tried to hit Tony Luke’s when I was in town. That’s real American food for real Americans. Obambi would look totally out of place at such a non-metrosexual dining establishment. But Sarah would fit right in!
The best we can do here in Atlanta is The Mad Italian or Philly Connection. The Connection imports (or did import) their buns. I always get mine with onions. Yum!
They're not UNDULY greasy -- of course, speaking from the home of Southern Fried Everything, what do I know?
I went to college in Jersey, but good heavens that was 31 years ago!
