WASHINGTON, Sept. 27 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Senators John McCain andBarack Obama squared off last night in Mississippi for the first presidentialdebate. During one segment, the candidates were asked about which prioritiesthey would adjust if elected president in hopes of improving the currenteconomic crisis. The following can be attributed to NEA President Dennis Van Roekel:
"In the midst of the worst economic crisis America has faced since theGreat Depression, Sen. John McCain tonight showed that he still does notunderstand the needs of working Americans. He still fails to grasp the directlink between a 21st century education system and a robust economy. McCain alsoshowed he cannot relate to educators because he is still proposing a spendingfreeze, effectively creating a No Child Left Behind funding gap of $15 billionand putting a crunch on millions of special education students, low-incomestudents, children living in poverty and the hiring of future teachers.
"Sen. Obama, on the other hand, understands that all roads to economicsecurity and prosperity go through our public schools. That is why he insistseducation remain a priority. Obama's plan calls for making college bothaccessible and affordable, emphasizing math and science to keep Americacompetitive in a changing global economy, and doubling the investment in earlychildhood education."

It would slow down the supply of milk fro the government teat.
NEA members are posting this everywhere, I even see references to this in letters to the editor this morning.. Let’s work on a good response..

The problem is this clown isn’t bothering to list anything specific; just a generalized emotional hate rant for those who do not think, i.e. people his constituents educated.
Wonder is Sallie Mae has the makings of another collaple?
Is there exotic futures trading on student loans just like mortgages?
No Child Left Behind is a bunch of hooey. Here’s a concept, parents could get off their duffs and hold their local schools accountable during 8-3:30 and then spend a little time with their children in the evenings going over homework and listening to them read.
This is even more evidence that Obama and the liberals want to move us toward socialism. When will people realize that we don’t want socialism in this country? If the liberals want socialism that badly, they can go somewhere else (Europe)!
The teacher’s unions are scared since education is the biggest chunk of spending left after entitlements. Considering Bush expanded education spending by like 200 billion dollars, you’d think the teacher’s unions would care less about a spending freeze. Their greed knows no bounds.
McCain told the truth. A spending freeze is basically the only thing to do given our huge deficits.
1. If the NEA is against it, that’s enough of a reason to be for it.
2. If an education pays so many economic benefits down the road, then let parents or adult students pay for it and reap the rewards of their investment.
3. We throw money DC schools as fast as they can print it and they only get worse More money does not = better schools.
4. Only in a liberal land does a spending freeze = a spending cut. I bet the lefties wouldn’t make the same argument if it were a defense spending “freeze”
Would that be the 21st century educational system that can't teach kids to make change for a dollar?
Would that be the 21st century educational system that can't teach a simple subject like American History without it being FUBAR?
Would that be the 21st century educational system that spends more time on gay/bi/lesbian/transexual education than Civics?
Would that be the 21st century educational system that can't keep 60% of minority students in class till graduation?
Would that be the 21st century educational system that...
Oh hell, what's the use!
I have a better idea than leaving the students in the cold: let’s put the NEA in a frozen lockbox!
Consider the source...NEA
Maybe it's time that the NEA was cut off at the knees so we quit funding with our own their abject efforts to corrupt the minds of out children.
I say BRAVO to McCain on this.
“McCain Proposed Spending Freeze Would Leave Millions of America’s Students in the Cold”
Good. Maybe they can work to get better grades for scholarships or get a damn job and pay for it themselves.
Which students? The ones who are being brainwashed by the 1960’s hippie professors at our colleges and universities?
Hey - let’s take the money they’ve earmarked for ACORN for the students. :D
Remember the good old days when the school systems worked and the federal government had nothing to do with them?
I can’t speak for Jeff, but there was a time when College Students held part time jobs to help pay the bills and perhaps if they were lucky they had parents who had saved to help them. Since when did the government become obligated to bankroll their college education. They can always join the military and then have the new GI Bill availabke to them. But, I guess that’s asking too much of a sacrifice.
It is likely to mean more to them as a result, and cause them to work harder for it, at the end of it they will not have so much debt...and it will ease the burden on the taxpayers.
That is all...and that is simply my own opinion on the matter. People are free to choose for themselves.
As usual, lies.
Here was my response to the local liberal rag’s forum. (note, the audience is liberal)

Do me a favor, look up a term; “Baseline Budgeting” in regards to the so called underfunded NCLB. When President Bush signed the largest increase in educational funding in history ($200 Billion), the way baseline budgeting works, if it doesn’t increase by this amount each year, it is called a cut.
Have you ever asked, why, if we keep putting more and more money into the educational system, is it getting worse and worse?
Why, do other countries that rate far higher in educational testing, spend so much less than us?
Why do home schooled children and private schooled children score higher even though they spend a fraction as public schools?
Maybe a freeze will do good. I can tell you from personal experience in the education business, that there is very little accountability for how the money is spent. If there is a problem, the solution is always just to throw more money at it. I read about a year ago an article in the Wall Street Journal where they calculated how much money was spent per child in New York City. They determined, in addition to paying the teachers, they could drive each child to school in a limo and give them lunch at Tavern on the Green every day. So much money is wasted and being improperly spent.
What is the definition of insanity? Doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.
As I said, maybe a spending freeze (note, a freeze is not a cut) and requiring they use money more wisely may actually help education?
Example, think of the quarter of a million dollars Longview High spend on astroturf. That is part of that education budget.. If school administration can’t even properly manage their own budgets, how can they prepare our children for the real world where they live under budgets?
Interesting from a global business site. I wonder how they will benefit from the Obama plan. “We can just keep on spending because we can just get American taxpayers to bail us out again” the motto of the left.
Check the source for this "news:" PR Newswire, the ultimate media whoring outfit. They'll publish anything for you if you have the bucks.
In other words, since this is not legitimate "news," the NEA had to resort to paying to spread their propaganda.
If it's from PR Newswire, it may be an idle curiosity, but it is most certainly not "news."
It's kinda interesting... I've noticed most of the stuff put out by PR Newswire comes from the RATS. Maybe PR Newswire is a front for the DNC or Soros.
Thanks for the clarification Jeff. I took out a minimum of student loans and pay for the bulk of my education from my salary. I take my classes at night so most of my classmates are older and hold down full-time jobs to pay for their education. Education definitely seems to be taken much more seriously when you’re paying for the bulk of it yourself and not getting tens of thousands in loans to pay for it.
So we’re getting ready to bail out these financial institutions to the tune of around 1 trillion dollars and these clowns want to spend even more so they can have more money thrown at them?
A spending freeze on every single government program is the least that should be done and then total elimination of every government program with a thorough review of whether it’s effective or not so it can be permanently struck off of the budget.
Every government-funded education program should be terminated and total reform of how and why government should fund anything like this should be implemented.
Grrrr! I’d string up all of these b......!
With all due respect, the vast majority of college degrees are a joke and are held by folks who could not pass the old New York Regent’s exams of 50 years ago (given to high school seniors).
Loosing financing for these worthless degrees would throw a lot of rather weak-minded lib arts “professors” out into the cold, cruel world where they might actually have to think for a living (”Let’s see, which implement do I serve the french fries with?”)
“No Child Left Behind is a bunch of hooey. Heres a concept, parents could get off their duffs and hold their local schools accountable during 8-3:30 and then spend a little time with their children in the evenings going over homework and listening to them read.”
You sound like my wife.
The response has to include that McCain believes that education is essential to the future of the US, and is a crucial economic and national security issue. That as such we can’t afford to play politics with education. That funding of education MUST be linked to performance, both by teachers and students. That doubling funding to an educational system that has failed students is that exact opposite of what we should be doing. That we should reward what works, and eliminate what doesn’t. That every dollar given to educators and educational systems that don’t do their job is a dollar taken from those that do their job, and ultimately is equivalent to ‘stealing’ the futures of our children. I would emphasize this last point and make it a theme. “Wasting precious dollars on educators, schools, and educational systems that don’t work is ‘stealing’ a bright future from our children.”
How can you respond to “publik skewel edukated” stupidity with anything intelligent?
Tell the NEA we need that money to build prisons to house the public school dropouts.
Oh please. We currently throw ungodly sums of money at the ineffectual public education “system” in this country. Do your job and stop lobbying for yet more money to be burned by that boondoggle.
A lot of these student loans are as pathetic and fraudulent as acorn sponsored house loans.
My nephew just got his 11th or 12th loan to get a PHd in divinity at an expensive university.
He has never earned a dime and has no prospect of doing so that I can see.
He’s a sweet boy, but I see no way he could ever repay the tens of thousands he’s got in student loans.
So I guess I should have just paid for his education myself as I will end up doing it (with all of your generous help)
LoL, I think I know your nephew, or at least someone just like him. Is he almost 40 and still living at home w/ his parents? Does he have more degrees than toilet paper? Does he look like Michael Moore and is just as rabid of a liberal? Was he offered a teaching job at a prestigious university but had to leave because of the 'pressure'?
I doubt it is the same person, but we all know at least one like that..
... During one segment, the candidates were asked about which priorities they would adjust if elected president in hopes of improving the current economic crisis.
Sen. John McCain suggested that one possible solution might be an across the board spending freeze on all categories except defense, veterans benefits and x.
Sen. Barack Obama demurred and said that was taking an ax where a surgery was needed because some programs were unfunded and vital for our future needs. The then cites one example. However he failed to cite any programs that he would excise with his surgeons scalpel.
The claim that Senator McCain does not understand the needs of working families is false. He understands that the government, like every working family, must balance its books to survive. In a national financial crisis, some programs must be limited. In his case, Senator McCain suggested that the economic pain be spread around to every single budget category but a national defense.
Unfortunately, we don’t know what Senator Obama would cut. We know that he would have to cut programs, we just don’t know which ones.
LOL! I know someone not quite like that, but close. Big like Michael Moore, a moderate, lives with his family, more degrees than toilet paper (paid for by the Indian Reservation grants) and now works as a sales manager for Games Workshop and doing quite well.
The trouble with gov. involvement is tuition cost rose at a rate much faster than they would have if students and their families had to come up with the cash themselves.
“Sen. John McCain tonight showed that he still does notunderstand the needs of working Americans. “
Pray tell us Mr Obama, who are the non-working Americans. I think pretty much all of us, except people on welfare, work.
The NEA is a bunch of liberal media whores who exploit teachers and students to enrich and empower their union bosses. Other than that, they are completely useless..
Aligning the price of higher education with something closer to the actual cost would be a far more effective way of ensuring that the opportunity to gain “higher education” would be available to all. The prices are outragous, not because education is expensive, but because the schools can get away with those prices. And the reason that they can get away with those higher prices is that the market is distorted with free government money.
You mean to tell me that the NEA is against McCain and for Obama?
Whoa.
Imagine my surprise.
“The following can be attributed to NEA President Dennis Van Roekel:”
translation:
I AM THE NEA, AND I AM IN THE POCKET OF THE DEMOCRAT PARTY.
No group has done more to damage education than the NEA in cahoots with liberals like Obama.
This statement is an absolute and utter outrage. The NEA is a disgusting partisan outfit whose credibility has been permanently tarnished by their illegal(*) partisan campaigning for the Democrats.
(*) Violating the conditions of their tax status
I wish someone on our side could lecture these young fools that are lining up to vote for the Messiah the people that work in the big towers in their campuses are the ones screwing them. Not John McCain or the Republicans.
