I don't know, really, what effect GM is having on Lansing right now...if anything, the effect is somewhat detrimental, stemming from the plant closures of a few years back. Those UAWers that took the buyout packages got the heck out of dodge--that's what a lot of the local foreclosures were. As far as outsourcing is concerned---GOOD! I say bring it on. The state has had great success in some of the work it has contracted out. Those jobs didn't go overseas. They didn't even cross state lines. They were just privatized.

Still, things do seem to be slowly turning around in Lansing. I know gas prices have brought some folks back into the city, and rock-bottom home prices have lured some people back as well. The next 12-24 months will be make or break--a couple of very high profile proposed real estate developments are hanging in the balance right now. If they fail, Lansing is in for a heckuva spanking.
