Republican presidential nominee John McCain opposes opening Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to oil and gas drilling. So does Democrat Barack Obama.
But McCain's running mate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, supports exploring there.
McCain and Obama back measures to curb greenhouse gas emissions, which they say contribute to climate change.
Palin has questioned whether global warming is actually the result of human activity.
"Did you expect two mavericks to ... agree on everything?" laughed McCain in an interview with CBS News' Katie Couric. "For us to agree on everything would make us, I think, a little boring."
While she may disagree with McCain on some key energy issues, Palin former chair of Alaska's Oil and Gas Conservation Commission says energy will be "my baby when I get to Washington, D.C." the Washington Post has reported.
Indeed, McCain has lavishly praised Palin's energy expertise, saying she "knows more about energy than probably anyone in the United States."
Role for No. 2 evolved So what exactly would a McCain administration's energy policy look like?
"McCain will be the president," said his climate change adviser, Floyd DesChamps.
But Kevin Book, an oil and energy policy analyst with FBR Capital Markets, quipped that if Palin is going to make energy her baby, "Mommy and Daddy are going to be fighting."
...
Cap on emissions
Palin told Couric she supports efforts to reduce greenhouse emissions, and acknowledged that climate change is apparent in Alaska: "We have erosion issues, and we have melting sea ice."
But asked if she thinks climate change is caused by humans, Palin said: "I'm not going to solely blame all of man's activities on changes in climate."

McCain & Palin should “celebrate their differences” instead of harnessing (and wasting) Palin to McCain’s “piss off the base” campaign.
And, when the press makes a big deal about their disagreements, they should say “if we agreed on everything, one of us wouldn’t be necessary”.
Imagine that. He chose a woman who actually has her own opinions.
Palin is not “lock step” with most of the idiots on the Hill....which is why she’s so clearly a breath of fresh air in a town that stinks to high heaven.
McCain changed his mind on ANWR, in light of the energy crisis - and probably Palin's 'expertise' on energy, as he put it. He now SUPPORTS oil exploration on ANWR. I really hate it when an argument, even one I basically agree with, begins with an erroneous premise.
Looks like they ARE ‘celebrating their differences’.
This is a bit like two people arguing over how many angels can fit on the head of a pin.
I had only seen he had done this for Other Offshore. When did he announce he supported drilling in ANWR?
Well.....she better minimize talking about global war...errrr.....climate change....because a whole lot of people think it’s going along and will see her as a dumbarse.
Truth be damned...
Good, that means A) She has a brain of her own and B) I think she is right because I disagree with McCain on climate change.
I think this is the reason on his campain website, under the issue of American Energy, Neither ANWR or Arctic is mentioned anywhere.

That’s a shame that you have to not speak the truth for fear of being thought of as stupid by the masses. Reminds me of a time when the world was thought of as flat and those who opposed that theory were laughed at as lunatics.
There was no time in recorded history when people generally believed the world was flat (unless they were a lunatic - akin to the "I've been abducted by aliens" crowd nowadays).
The issue was no one could agree on just how big the distance was between the west coast of Europe and the east coast of Asia. Made trip planning difficult - especially since there was no accurate way of measuring longitude at sea.
Sorry to lecture - the Flat Earth Myth is just my pet peeve :-| (that and people who leave the caps off of felt tip markers)
One more, I was hunting for the most recent time Sen. McCain spoke on the issue
McCain and Palins disagreement on ANWR was brought to the fore on Wednesday when a voter asked the Alaska governor if she had been able to changes McCains mind on the issue.
Still working on it!, Palin said, to laughter and applause.
This meeting is adjourned, McCain cracked.
Yes, I checked that and found it odd. What he has on his site is too general. Just the fact that he’s FOR domestic energy production is controversial enough to the usual suspects, so if he’s trying to avoid too much controversy, he’s overdoing it. He should NOT water down his statements.
That happened in the Grand Rapids townhall meeting. I was there.
I’m Google News searching, and right now, if you use any of 3/4 of a dozen keyword groupings NOT containing ‘palin’, the first page hits on Palin anyway. Still looking, but maybe his change of stance on offshore drilling (which I could have sworn happend at the same time as the change of heart on ANWR), combined with the Drill Here, Drill Now campaign got me confused. I’ll look again when I can spare a few minutes later.
Take a look at the comment in post #16 by a freeper who confirms that was said.

Thanks for the confirmation. A CNN blog is a doubtful source for me. I used it because it was the most recent I found.
Ah, thank you. I was half convinced my memory was going!
Read it again. McCain is not agreeing to drill in ANWR; Sarah is still trying to convince him.
